I understand people's frustrations with the lack of in-game chat.
However, proximity chat isn't the answer. Prox chat still allows a player to spam others and ruin their experience.
What I'd like to see, is an in-game, one-to-one, push-to-talk chat:
I envision the "inspect player" button getting modified so that a single quick press works as it currently does, but holding the button down enables chat with that user. Or at least indicates a request to chat.
A chat icon would appear near your name in the HUD of the person with whom you're requesting a chat.
If that player also holds down the "inspect player" button on you, you can now chat with one another, potentially agreeing to join a party. Once in the party, the console's party chat would be used as normal.
This method keeps the "safety" of having to explicitly request/accept chat sessions, but doesn't require a lengthy, console based party invite. You can quickly find out if another player is willing to chat at all let alone join a party, without having to go into menus where you can't even tell if they've walked away.

Edited by Dannystaples: 9/21/2014 12:04:14 AMWhat is the difference to you from having general chatter in The Tower and someone spamming you for ages personally wanting you to go into a raid? I personally can ignore the chatter in The Tower if I want. The only thing I am looking for right now is more content I haven't completed a billion times over.

Prox chat IS it. It could only apply to public spaces. Muting is quick and easy in this game not to mention it's not truly a mmo with 100's of players running around you. 16 people in a tower and if it was say 50ft in game space it would allow immersion. Imagine being able to walk up to a group of players who are talking in a circle.
only people who are against proximity chat have never seen how it works
There are a whole host of issues with proximity chat but selective chat would work. Also if they would FORCE communication and provide universal matchmaking with chat enabled by default the game would be a ton better.
-
I'm trying to figure out why they didn't implement chat in the first place. I hate when there are three of us in a crucible match then a random grabs the heavy when we are on the way. They don't think about waiting or teamwork they just take it themselves. Maybe they didn't want people getting cussed out for being idiots idk

Proximity chat isn't the answer if the question is "do you like pizza". If the question is "what feature would allow you to communicate with your fellow gamers and allow immersion and a sense of community", proximity chat would be accepted by the judges.
-
Prox chat is a bad idea but strike and crucible needs to happen and an area for recruiting needs to be in tower where you can chat with people looking for a fire team and can hop around to other identical rooms with different people quickly

This would be perfect. I might have missed it but I think that it would be nice to talk to multiple people at a time to. But this idea is perfect.

Edited by Guardian SS2: 9/19/2014 4:37:27 PMThere we go. I completely agree. Everyone keeps talking about proximity chatting. I say no because of the childish nature of most gamers. The next argument is that a mute button would take care of that. Yeah, I agree to the point if you was in the tower. Let's say your in the middle of a battle with a lot of vex or a fallen captain, then some random is running in circles behind you screaming and trolling or whatever they feel is going to make you mad, are you really going to stop battle just to mute the player? There is no pause button, but yes, I am down for a kind of chat engagement or initiation.

If there is an annoying player in the game you should be able to mute them
-
Prox chat would be great! If you don't want to hear someone then there could be a mute option when selecting players.
-
I think we should have a prox. Chat. We would just need an option to mute it if we want to that we can turn on and off
-
Agree, best solution for this I've seen so far!

The only time we "need" chat is in strikes, raids, and the crucible. -
Mute people who annoy you, don't over-complicate it.

Good idea sir or ma'am

Edited by ChaosFross: 9/19/2014 1:40:23 AMHow would this work for a group, or a fireteam? If you we're trying to get a group of people from the tower to do a raid, you'd need to talk to more then one. I just prefer the "talk to everyone, mute the rest" idea, but anything, even proxy chat, is better then what we have (or what we don't, for that matter).
-
Liberals....the REAL world is full of people who annoy you. And people who you may even befriend. Youll never know unless you can actually do it...and fyi not everyone wins and gets trophies in the real world either. Just saying. Sheltering folks never works. Mute does.

I see what you are getting at her, but what if you are doing a public event and want to chat out coordinate with other players participating? The chat option you suggested works for games on PC but it wouldn't be as easy to hold down R3 and still shoot as it is on a keyboard. Maybe if the same idea was used but instead of holding it down you could just press it, which would then prompt the other played to press R3 to accept the chat, and that opened a chat line between the two players. Then just change it so you hold it (R3) down when inspecting.

Yes I originally thought proxy was a good Idea however this seems like a better solution .

great idea

100% Agree!! Well done sir/madam!

Perfect. Bungie please hire this man Or woman.

Best idea I've heard

That's what I have been saying. We need to communicate. An open mic ( with mute ) would fail. Open up the 3 party rule. Out in the open and in the tower. Make the invite to comm. faster. We are good to go. Good post. Let's hope Bungie adds this.
