In an era where humanity is leaving a dark age and entering a Renaissance in which the vestiges of superstition still remain, I am combing over the ruins of this forgotten time. Humanity at one point had communed with this dead god that protects us, and now we are growing strong enough to recover that knowledge.
I kick over the rust worn metal, uncovering a dead ghost with no trace of the light left. I pick it up and hold it to for my ghost to see and prompt it to find anything worth recovering.
After a few moments I request that my ghost open my Grimoire, my portfolio of documents gathered about the outside world for the vanguard and speaker to see. My ghost recalls the journal entry of a dying guardian that was recorded by his own ghost.
This is the world of Destiny where the Grimoire carries the dark and foreboding mysteries. On the surface of the game itself we are lead to believe that this is a simple cliche matter of light vs dark, almost as if it was taken directly from a children's story, but what if it was? When making discoveries in the Grimoire, the player gets the feeling that there is something a lot more sinister going on than some may think.
The stranger is a guardian not forged of the light, she has no ghost, and she told us "you will have to chose a side even if it is the wrong one". There are so many mysteries and questions that drive the player to explore and find more pages for his Grimoire.
On the surface, we are being fed what the speaker and vanguard would have the general public believe. But when we dig deeper, that story they feed us begins to become ever more transparent.
In just one week I've been tracking this lore perusing every possible source and reference which gives me new leads and it's all starting to look like the 5 years that went into making this game all went into making the lore of this game to be very rich and worthy of the word "universe". You're all in for a wild ride

To anyone that hasn't done so yet, if you already beat the game go read up on all the grimoire cards you have, and then replay the story. A lot of things that happen within the story start to make sense (especially with the Vex) Although, Destiny doesn't have the best story the effort Bungie puts into the lore of the game and the background information is astonishing.

I have said this once before but I will say it again here too because it seems like this is a popular thread. Destiny is just the beginning, the foundation or a blank canvas. Bungie's decision to go with a work of fiction that does not bind them to any other work of fiction out there is a very, very smart decision. The people who lack the attention span to stick with the game and experience a lot of the things that are not present within the first few session of play will move on to the next title. And that is fine with me. But for those of you who have vision can see where Destiny is going just by noticing the subtle hints that are present within the game in its present form. The thing I find most frustrating is reviewers who continually report to people that the game is "empty" or titles like "What Destiny COULD have done better". Okay, could? Who said it was over? Yeah okay maybe you reached soft level cap, or hell full level cap. Does that mean the game is over? Hell no! Mark my words... When people start walking away because they lack the vision to see where the game we know as Destiny, which is very aptly named in my opinion, begins to evolve over time, they will turn their heads and come on back. Destiny needs to be looked at like this. It is like an ice burg, if you take it for what it appears to be on the surface you will be sorely mistaken. But, once you dig down deeper and allow yourself to be immersed in the fiction, the setting and the gameplay, you will see that Destiny is only the beginning, a canvas for us to paint with our experiences OVER TIME, however shallow or deep they may be. Destiny can't be reviewed accurately. Because most of the people who do in fact get paid to review games cannot invest the time it takes to truly let others know what Destiny is, but instead play it for a week or so, review from where they are at and sadly fall short of the truth. Destiny is going to be around for a long time everyone. This is not another fly by night AAA title that is banking off you purchasing the next "installment" six months from now. This is a living breathing universe that is yet to be fully realized by the people who's purpose is to do just that, EXPERIENCE it.

100% agree

How they took someone as amazing as Peter Dinklage and made him more boring than a doorknob is beyond me.
-
HAH OH WOW
-
Depends on when they actually out a story into the game instead of queens bounties and such...
-
They should of done the lore in game similar to the way Mass Effect does it.
-
Yeah.. Bungie wrote a lot of stuff about this game on their official page, completely ignored to put any story in the game itself but right.. this "game" has a great story..
-
I just wish the grimoire was available in game. Like dark souls, so much of the story lies in the reading. The companion app helps, but trying to read it on a computer is a slow, plodding experience.
-
The Stranger isn't a Guardian. And yes there is a lot of really awesome story and lore, the problem is none of it is in the game. Making the grimoire accessible in game would help a little.
-
I do like the lore but they should have told us more in the games story instead of us going to have to find it

Edited by Darklight235: 9/19/2014 3:47:24 AMI definitely expect more from the story, but I don't expect it now. The story at the moment is pretty shallow. There are still SO many questions still unanswered. That's where some people say the story is terrible, but they don't think about Destiny having a 10 year life or events and dlc that will add more pieces to put together.

"That turd I did last week was an analogy for the existence of mankind."
-
For those of you who think Destiny's Story was crap... The legend has only just begun!
-
I love the game and the universe but I have to be honest and say that I was not impressed with Destiny's story campaign. It was rather underwhelming... I'm sure the actual story is rich within the Destiny universe and there's much more to be seen in the future through DLCs and updates. All I'm saying is that the initial campaign story is rather weak and unconvincing.

Very deep lore. It at this point very little actual story and what does exist is disjointed and mostly unexplained.
-
Deluded fanboy alert
-
I agree. My biggest lore questions. Who created the Vex? Why? Where do the Hive come from? Who is there "god" they worship? What words have the they seen fallen to the darkness? Where do the Cabal come from? How did they become such a militarized group? Why are the fallen broken up into houses? What caused them to split?
-
I hope you're joking.
-
There was barely anything for the story, they just send you out to kill monsters and deploy your ghost through the same places over and over, its really repetitve.
-
Incredibly cool lore/concept? Yes. Absolutely insultingly bad presentation? Yes.
-
Too bad destiny has some of the worst storytelling I've seen from a game in years.
-
same thing with halo 1, 3 and reach great world lore but not great story telling and destiny is just more severe with potencially even better game lore (better than halo 1 atleast) but the story telling is just soo soo bad which honestly is a real shame =( just look at halo 4 argueably the weakest plot of any halo game so far but 100% best narrative the series has ever seen and the grimoire system........ mass effect 1 did same kinda thing with codex's except theirs were better in literally ever single way and that came out 7 years ago....... but seriously try and think of a way grimoires are better cause usually somethings never 100% better than something else but in this case i think it is

Edited by Ghost593835: 9/18/2014 9:31:56 PMSo does every single other sci Fi game story suck now to you ? Is destiny the only sci Fi game you will play because all the other sci Fi games story and lore suck?
