Awoken doesn't know how they survived?

Why is the dialog in the Reef the same if you're an Awoken or human or Exo? Seriously missed opportunity for interest/acting/subtext/layers/intrigue/emotion/making choices/anything-at-all. Wouldn't an Awoken either know, or ask his/her ghost a more knowing question than "How did the Awoken survive?" or where the reef came from, or anything? the same as an exo or human would? Wouldn't the Awoken queen act differently to a fellow Awoken? If she didn't, wouldn't an Awoken Guardian respond to *that*? Wouldn't the queen's brother say something like *you may look like us, but don't let that fool you. You're in the wrong place, otherworlder." Where's the nuance in this scene? If I understand correctly, a lot of people fled Earth during the Collapse. Most died, but some of them were changed by some event, and became the Awoken, and they survived out there between light and dark. And somehow the Awoken you play got back to Earth, died and then was revived without any understanding of what Awoken are, what even created the reef, or anything. And even asks the question as if it all happened while he/she was dead. When people talk about story, I think it's these kind of scenes they're talking about. It HAS a story... it's just not told very well.

  • It was said somehow that the Awoken shun those that aren't from the Reef.

    • I agree that there were some good potential plot hooks/ twists missed here but thats only looking at it from one perspective. How can we be sure that it wasn't done intentionally as to say that the awoken in the reef view every species outside of the reef in the same light. In other words it would make no difference to them if you were a human, exo or even an awoken to them since you came from outside their territory.

      • And this is just one possible area where a storyteller would have spun just a thread. If Bungie is trying to generate this super-secret, hidden twisty tale that won't be fully unraveled for years then there needs to be more HOOK in the script. So many missed places to give hints at a story even if it wasn't the real story.

      • Do you know precisely how early humans survived natural disasters over thousands of years ago? You clearly should, given they are your predecessors, even though there was such a large gap in time between the events. Seems a little more sensible when the question is turned around in a more relatable instance, doesn't it?

The Awoken are just Humans that fled Earth during The Collapse, and something out in space changed them. Some came back to Earth, some didn't. An Earthborn Awoken would know just as much about the ones in The Reef as their Human or Exo counterparts.

        • Your guardian died protecting civilians who where trying to reach the colony ships and escape earth... You fell you died atop a car guns blazing as some all mighty force wiped you and everyone else around out... You where alive before the reef even existed If you where an exo you do not remember you original programming if you are human you have no idea about anything and of you are awoken you are in the same boat, But i agree the cutscene should engage the characters race/gender far more... As all that cutscene did was slap words together to suit any possible character

        • The Fall was a bad time for everyone, I don't think those who survived cared too much about writing history books. And just because you're Awoken doesn't mean you were there when the Awoken were created, that's like saying all black people remember being slaves.

        • I couldn't agree more. This was one of those scenes that was so lazily written and ignored that it really bothered me. It's such a waste of potential and history! Like the Speaker saying "I could tell you of the great battles." Well yeah, you could. And you should. But it's just lazy storytelling everywhere you look in this game. And I like the game, too! It's just so shoddily written.

          • You're not an awoken, human, or Exo. You're a guardian. Your body is but a vessel for a greater purpose. Your cotton sock doesn't stop and question itself when walking through a field of cotton.
pretty week answer, but probably pretty close to anything you'd hear from bungie
• Question to Grimoire fans: What if the queen was *more* hostile to earthborn Awoken? Wouldn't that be a more interesting choice? I mean, when people say the story of Destiny feels "flat" or "unengaging" or "emotionless"... It's these moments I'm talking about, where moments of dramatic opportunity just sail past. It's kind of indicitive of how *every* character in Destiny treats my character. All of them talk to me with neither fondness nor hostility... like we live in a world entirely made up of IRS agents and DMV employees. The queen couldn't even bother to figure out my gender, let alone my race!

              • You were rebirthed with a hard case of amnesia; and you died long before the war ended. I think it's safe to say you have no clue as to what happened.

              • Agree 100%. It's all I could think about during this part. I couldn't help but wonder why they hadn't mentioned that I'm an awoken from Earth.

              • The reef is a collection of broken evac ships from the humans trying to escape Earth and asteroids from the belt. The awoken in the reed treat earth born awoken the same as any other non reef born awoken. With hostility. The Reef is the barrier between the darkness and the inner planets. Grimoire cards may be a wrong way of explaining the story but they are there.

In a nutshell, as already mentioned here: Awoken who leave/are born outside the Reef are shunned by the Reef society. Guardians do not remember their past lives. Once "ghosted", Guardians are pretty much a completly different being than their race of origin. The Queen and Brother refer to them as such - Guardian, like the Exo Stranger. Simply put, to the Queen you are a Guardian, not Awoken and she treats you as such. To them you are a stranger and an agent of a significant outside force.

                  • Because it's possible that not EVERY Awoken fled Earth during the Collapse. It's entirely possible that there are some who ether stayed of their own volition to fight or got left behind. It's entirely possible that you were one of those that didn't escape and were slain in the attempted exodus. The Awoken are a variation of Human changed by spending too long in space during the Golden Age. There were plenty who ended up as refugees on Earth that moved to the Last City.

                  • Eh, I've basically given up preaching how bad the story it is. Its there and we're stuck with it. I think the main focus was given to the raid developers and everything else was kind of built around them without the same kind of importance.

                  • The Earthborn Awoken know nothing about the Reefborn Awoken since they're isolationist. You aren't actually from the Reef. Your ancestors left the Reef and returned to Earth to fight for the City. Earthborn Awoken receive little welcome from the Queen since they're probably viewed as traitors to some degree.

                    • Race and gender are purely for aesthetic choices and have no effect on the game outside of the player's voice and dance emote.
