I've Given Up on Destiny and Got My Refund; Here's Why Maybe You Should Too (If You're Having Problems Still)

After waiting a week for some kind of technical support, customer service, communication, anything from Bungie regarding my inability to play Destiny despite having paid for it, I've given up. I've uninstalled the game and have been given a full refund from Microsoft under the "(ii) the media does not work" clause of the MS Refund Policy. Here's my original support thread: http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/69078858/0/0 Before I go, I wanted to post this. Not to incite argument or debate, nor to flame the game itself or the game makers or the community. From the start, I maintained not that I had a problem with the technical difficulties surrounding the game launch, but that I had an inherent problem with Bungie's absolute lack of communication, technical support, customer service, guidance, everything. I waited and waited and asked and requested and at the end of a week, I got tired of feeling like a beggar with an empty cup in my hands, pleading for Bungie to spare me a few cents. As a product developer and their relationship with a consumer, this is the opposite of how it should be. A company should cherish the business of its consumers and should reward and protect the investment of their early adopters. Not cast them aside and make them feel as though they are in the wrong for requesting a bit of information as to why the product the consumer has purchased is unusable, and perhaps what is being done to render it useable, and perhaps a timeline for when that might take place. For those thinking "oh just shut up and go away; if you don't want to play, fine, get your refund and begone" I say this: I'm writing this because if consumers don't hold their product developers to a certain standard, then we're left with whatever a developer deems acceptable. The company believes it's okay that a consumer's request for customer service or technical support can go unanswered for a week; the company believes it's okay to have a game that is unplayable by some of its unconsumers remain in that state without communication or information back to that consumer group. I'm writing this because if all of you who are having now the same issues I was having all pursued your refunds, you'd hit them where the care: their pocket books. And then, perhaps, they'd listen and change their practices. Sadly, instead, all I'm going to read about is how great a game Destiny is, and what a superb job Bungie did. There will be no one to hold Bungie accountable for producing and releasing a game that was not ready for release at the cost of their consumers time. And again, to those who say "well it worked fine for me so stop complaining" I'm glad it worked fine for you, but it didn't work fine for me. At all. This is akin to 30,000 people buying tickets to a football game and when everyone shows up, 2,000 tickets turn out to be faulty and those consumers are turned away at the door. The other 28,000 I'm sure have a great time and say the game is great (other than the lights turning off every once in awhile). Is that okay? Maybe to you, it is. But to me, it isn't. Not simply because I'm one of those 2,000 but we should ALL have a problem with that. Because next time, what if you're one of those 2,000? Wouldn't you want the other 28,000 to join you in your outrage at having bought a perfectly good ticket with your hard earned money... and then not get what you paid for? Anyway, I'll stop now. Writing this gave me something to do while I was on hold with MS support. The MS Store Support guy, by the way, was superb. He listened to my problem, and when I said I believe it warranted a refund, explained that he could help, it would take him 15 minutes or more to complete that, and asked if I was okay waiting. As the 15 minutes went by, he kept popping back on the phone to let me know "it'll be another 10 minutes" "7 minutes to go" "3 more minutes" "almost there" "okay, done thanks for your patience sir". You see the difference, Bungie? I can't even CALL you guys. And if I did, the analogous scenario would be that I would just reach an automated voice that would say "PLEASE HOLD" with no further information... and no one would ever actually pick up the phone. Got my refund, and I'm off to put my money behind product developers more deserving. Best of luck to the rest of you players out there.

  • Similar story here. I got my refund yesterday from Microsoft. My main complaint was even a little vaguer/looser: that they locked achievements away from people, and something like, "Lootboxes. You are probably aware of the debacle, sir." And, I bought the D2 digital version with the expansion, so the lockout didn't even affect me! Microsoft gets it right for me, too. My rep was also great. But he also said that I was getting the refund because I had never asked for anything like that before. Take that for what it is. And don't forget that Microsoft paid an employee for a quarter hours work to get you that refund. This puts Microsoft at a loss, too. So there's pressure there, as well. Too bad that we'll never see stats of how many people are asking for, and how many are getting refunds. If they ever come clean and make D2 the game it should have been, I can just buy it again. My account will still have my gear, including the "HeartBurn" from this weekend. Time to get off the sidelines (couch? lol). Vote with your wallets.

  • Same here. Worked fine for about a year. Over the last 2 months I have had to reinstall several times. I am only able to play half of the strikes. It crashes the game and ejects my disk on the other half. The worst part of this, and to echo your words, is that bungie does not seem to provide feedback or support. It feels like we, the customers, are not worth their time or effort.

    • Bungie is never getting another dime from me. Destiny has ruined me for gaming in general so I'm pretty bummed.

    • Just want to say I thought your post was excellent. I am the same as many gamers out there, I just want to play but have constant technical errors and have since day one. But because the masses are happy why should the suffering few be given any thought.

      • Allot of us bought this game online, and can get a full refund. it would be great if we all did that, even if we are having no issues. Just to send a message you know? Just buy it again 2 days later. Sure You'll lose all items and characters but who cares? No I'm kidding I just think it would be funny if something like that ever happened. But yeah I'm with you and I'm going to call and get my refund soon as well. good write.

      • I just wanted to say thank you. You just made my day. This is probably the only refund post on these forums that is actually polite and rational. I personally love destiny, but everyone is entitled to their opinions. I'm glad you aren't one of those people who likes to complain about it.

        • This is customer support? The forum? This must be a joke. Bungie, why can I not stay connected? Like most everyone here you (bungie) owe me and all of us an explanation or a refund. Don't get me wrong I want to play, however I can't. I play on a console because I don't want to deal with issues like this. I've now spent hours of my time attempting to fix all the different error codes. I'm sure Bungie knew/knows that it would not help. I still can't believe this is the customer support. Other players? What a joke! Bungie set up a real customer support for us, NOW. If you want my business I want a tech person from bungie to contact me or give my a way to contact them, have them walk me through every step that I'm sure I've already done and give me a real explanation and solution to the problem. This is crazy. I've been looking forward to this game for over a year. I've bought 2 T-shirts before the game came out because I just knew Destiny was going to rock. It does for 30 to 40 minutes at a time. Again my wishes are to pay for the game and play as the game is intended to play. I just can't. I'm not unreasonable, announce how much time you need to fix the issues and let the players decide to keep the game or not. But this is crap, guessing you listened to Activision on customer support (GET THE MONEY). If it is my internet company give me some ammo to fire at them. Everyone knows that they aren't going to fix anything unless I know exactly what to tell them. I don't have any issues with any other game. Did I mention that this customer support really pisses me off. WTF, this is such a disappointment,.

            • I absolutely love Destiny and it works for me, but he is right about something. Bungie has an abysmal customer service, actually, they don't even have it. None of them answers forum questions and mostly trolls or flamers end up writing crap on other people's threads, of people that need desperate help. Good luck to you and I am sorry that you encounter this issue...

              • I'm on ps4 and I had to do the same. I think they made something quite good, but the simple fact that I'm unable to play what I paid nearly $90 for is ridiculous. I called up Sony the other night and got a refund, only took a few minutes. I may pick it up on the cheap later on to see if they sorted it all out, but I'm not paying top dollar for this.

              • I'm feeling exactly the same way. All the problems I'm having aren't met with error codes, just painfully long loading screens that I sit through until I get tired of waiting or it force quits and I do whatever I was trying to do by my self. I find it painful that a game so blatantly based on interacting with people won't even let me connect with other people. In the 7-9 hours I've put into destiny, I've only seen THREE OTHER PLAYERS besides me. And this isn't a connection problem, I know that. Why, because my roommate is literally playing Destiny with 20 other people next to me on his PS4 even as I type this out. My Xbox One has worked fine with all my other games except Titanfall, the only difference is (you're gonna love this Ghost) I called both EA's and Microsoft's support lines and they both collaborated with me to figure out what was wrong. Now Titanfall runs like a dream, and Destiny has now become the most boring single player game I have ever played. So it's very obvious to me that I should try to get as much money back from GameStop as I can. I hear that you can get $40 in in-store credit if you return it before the end of September. I encourage you, if you have been fighting with this game ever since it came out, it's better to cut your losses and see if you could be reimbursed one way or another for this giant train wreck of a game. Spend that money on a game you know you will enjoy.
