Ok, I've tried to kid myself but I've got to be honest now... I'm not happy

After playing the beta, I was very impressed and was very swepped up In the hype. So much so I pre-ordered the overpriced Ghost edition (i've never bought a special edition anything before) started playing the game and after a few hours of trying out the multiplayer, story etc I began to get a feeling at the pit of my stomach, the game felt empty and repetitive, the missions played on random parts of the map which had no real coherent storyline began this feeling and then it continued. I was bemused because the story had no story, it was go here, kill bad guys, have your ghost hack something, rinse and repeat. Your character has no real personality, the only person that has got more than a few lines of dialogue is the ghost. There are very few cut-scenes to explain what is going on or to give some depth to this story, there is no explanation of what the darkness is or why it has wiped everything out, or why the traveller came in the first place or what did it do to wipe everything out, it's very very vague. Furthermore where did the cabal, vex, hive, fallen come from? why are they fighting each other and what are they trying to achieve? Then there's the planets or I should say 4 relatively small maps that don't have many interactive features, this is meant to be a science-fiction epic?? In truth i've never felt so disappointed after playing a game before. It was like bungie have said 'Lets take everything we've learned from the Halo series.. (Deep and immersive story with varied and interesting characters with good chemistry and good humour, varied missions with an actual point) and let's not build on that.. let's take a step back and make it is bland and shallow as possible' I see how they've tried to make a jack of all trades game but it in doing this i don't think anyone can make they're mind up at what it is, something has been lost. I think the only real reason i'm replaying the same boring missions is improve my armour and weapons, something that I did on boarderlands... at least that had a sense of humour. Whats worse is I spent £150 on the ghost edition, I never bought a special edition anything before, i definitely wont be doing again.

  • As I said on another post - my thoughts exactly! (I'm sharing thoughts I shared elsewhere) The only reason we are complaining is because our expectations have of course been pumped, and in the hope that Bungie will respond with positive action, we try to shout as loud as poss.... I think it's an easy way out to say 'if you don't like it, don't play it'. The point is we want to play, and are offering our feedback as a result. Isn't this what bungie asked for? I for one would love: 1) a more immersive experience that I can connect with, on an emotional and intellectual level. This would certainly help me stomach the incessant, torrent of similar missions (ie I know why I'm doing it). 2) ability to 'solve problems' in creative / interesting ways. Which doesn't boil down to solely taking out the same enemies or spending an inordinate amount of time in the crucible. This is where Destiny falls short for me. A supremely creative studio like bungie could 'easily' add more diverse gameplay content to the mix (and I hope they will, with time). That said ALL of these vociferous complaints could be put to bed if bungie fessed up and said 'this is the direction we're going in.' (Apologies Bungie, if somewhere you have and I've missed it). But I mean, non-cryptic, spoiler-free of course, putting some cards on the table sort of thing. Will there be a richer, campaign/story? Y/N? This way folk can either say 'I'm in' or 'I'm out'. At the moment, like many have said, it seems the game is in a kind of underdeveloped limbo, slightly insure of itself (apart from PvP that is). Yes, this will be because bungie are slowly releasing stories and chapters, as well as DLCs. However, first impressions count. If we're being asked to buy into what for me amounts to a real lack of VARIETY, much needs to change, otherwise many like me may end up saying, 'thanks, but not thanks!' There is a lot riding on this game. Ppl annoyed by the criticism, whilst yes we do need patience, however I think gamers across platforms, have wanted something fresh, and inclusive. That's all. I think people (like me) really wanted a seminal, ground breaking experience..., dare I say the 'one ring to rule them all', and that's why we doth protest so! ...In the end, I hope to continue star-side, but at the moment the jury is still out... it remains to be seen if Destiny will materialize into the master piece it was originally touted to become. I for one HOPE it will! NB - in not writing the game off, I just probably need more patience!

      •
I realized the whole story is really just an introduction for what's to come... You're not meant to know much yet if you want you can read grimiore but bungie is just setting up destiny for 10 years, you can't go to some places that are confirmed yet. Also the PvP, patrol and strikes are really fun... Let's see what bungie has in store before making judgments.
An introduction for what is to come? Uhm, no. You develop a game and it's story before it is released. Not after and hope that people who just paid for a complete product keep playing and purchase the DLC. Also, I get the idea of the Grimiore but why isn't there something like that in the game? Like Mass Effect did?

        • Everyone is comparing it to a book and that this is chapter one. Lets compare it to a house instead, when I bought my house I wanted an unfinished basement because I wanted to work on that and finish it myself. BUT. I live in Canada and it gets really effing cold here in the winter so I still need to buy a house that has at least one floor finished so I don't freeze to death in the winter. Destiny and its story feel so incomplete it would be like buying a "house" when all you were really getting was a bare lot with a few survey stakes in the ground. The potential is still there for an amazing mansion to be built...but right now I'm still pissed about buying that bare lot.

            • I am absolutely let down by the first instalment of destiny, but I see it as just that, the first chapter. My advice is, play till you feel like you hit the wall, then put this game away, play something else and come back to it in 3 months. For the gods sake don't trade it in or waste your life whining on message boards. Just put it aside for later

            • The game alone as a work of art is worth exploring (I can account only for Xbox one). If the expanded content for destiny pans out, the story will take care of itself.

If you came into this with the expectation of everything being revealed so early, that's your own fault. More regions and activities are coming. Have you read anything Bungie has said about this game? Also, of course your character doesn't have much of a personality, your character is part of the RPG element.

                • I completely agree with this post. A little disappointed with max lvl 20, and having to collect light to gain "levels" which mean absolutely nothing lol. Just means someone found a cool piece of armor. Plus, there are no purchases leading up to legendary and exotic items. So when you hit lvl 20, you have to play ALOT and earn virtually NOTHING, until you save up enough for a legendary weapon..

                • I know and get what bungie are trying to do but the launch content is boring and repetitive and needs tuning I won't make excuses for bungie but this is a game that will be improved over time (I hope). Also the maps are wayyyyyyy to small it does not feel like a planet and there's not a whole lot of charm. Feels under developed borderlands currently do it better.

                • I still think it's too early to tell as far as overall game scoring, but you're so right as far as story goes. I almost feel more connected to my gear/class than my character (let's not mention the ghost). "Let me do (insert generic activity) to fight the (generic enemy) to save the (generic universe)." I enjoy the gameplay, I even really like the pvp (except for maps with heavy vehicle use). But it would take some serious story infusion to try to prove this game has character.

                • It seems like i enjoyed the beta a lot more that the actually release. I still am loving destiny, but it needs more variety of missions. The patrol mode can be made interesting by this! The weapons can also be made more unique and special. How about a beam riffle? Grenade pistol? And vehicles. We need more vehicles.

                • It is very easy to get into the hype, specialty the visuals of the game. I try my best not to buy games until I read the reviews but we are all impulse buyers when it comes down to demand for good quality games. For buying the ghost edition, they are just extra money gimmicks. I always buy the base price of $60.00 USD + tax for a game. Why buy the statue? Why buy the collectors edition? Will it ever be collectible? Gamespot gave the game a 6/10? Why buy all the extra junk?

                • I guess I'm more easily entertained than many people here or something because I see the little things, like the stranger pushing you ghost away and calling it "little light" on Venus, as good things that make the story better than most others in the same genre. I am not going to say it's one of the greatest stories of all time or anything like that but it's certainly better than most FPS campaigns I've played. And that's before looking at the grimore cards though there needs to be a way to access them in game to make it a more integral part of the story.

Run through same place as last mission, set up ghost, kill 1-3 waves, kill boss, gg. Strikes are not really different, same idea. Patrol missions are just go back to same mobs in story mode and kill them or kill them and collect something. Thats it. Anyone seriously bigging this up is just lying or in denial.

                    • I am not trying to bash anyone or invalidate your opinion but I think you should try and see Destiny for what it really is. Most FPS players are use to linear experiences in terms of story and gameplay which is the exact opposite of what Destiny is offering. The one thing I noticed from the start is the lack of in game NPC's - the characters in the world of destiny are shallow and empty - you cannot have a conversation with them - you don't care about these characters at all - think of games like Mass Effect and yes Halo....all of them had deep, interesting characters that made you care about the world you were playing in BUT this where Destiny is different. You see in Destiny the interesting characters are the actual human beings playing along side you! It's an awesome experience to play with 'friends', all of whom I have never actually met in real life. You cannot deny the great feeling of somebody taking out a swarm of enemies who just killed you and reviving you! The same goes for when you are the one doing the reviving. Destiny is a great game when you know what you are playing - if you are looking for the same recipe you have been made so accustomed to then yes you will be sorely disappointed. I for one am so happy to see a company like Bungie taking such a bold risk in making a game that is different for once instead of playing it safe like so many others do.

                          • I kindof like how the missions are more about action than deep plot. Think about it: now that the action and online random co op is the main priority, everything you play in Destiny feels like a multiplayer lobby experience. In other words, it felt like I was in multiplayer matchmaking no matter what I did, which I loved, and wouldn't it be awesome if less creative shooters, like CoD and Battlefield, replaced their bubble enclosed single player campaigns with an always online coop action adventure?

                            • You're expecting this to play and release like a shooter. Compare it to an MMO. Most mmo's on release have a fairly limited story and really don't explain the specific question that would make clear everything in the story, for two reasons: one, if the story was that clear there would be no game, and two, it's basically just barely finished enough for a release. This isn't the entire game. It's one chapter of the story. Keep your pants on, be patient, and enjoy killing things until they release the DLC and start doing some serious updates. WoW was like this at release, GW2 was like this at release. In fact, I can't think of a single MMO was not like this at release. That being said, most mmo's never really get finished to the point that they should be (like most software) and ultimately fail to capture a large user persistent, permanent user base before something else comes along that satisfies your curiosity and impatience (like most software). There's plenty of room for improvement, but if you look at this like a seed rather than a fully grown mature plant you're already expecting to bloom, you'll see a different picture. You might still want to quit playing for a while until certain things are improved or added, but just look at what it is as a shooter: 4 different weapon categories, 4 different weapon types for each, lots of upgrades that can modify and greatly improve the weapon's performance. Decent enemy AI, PvP that works well and covers different tactical play. The story, from this perspective is dismal at best and has exactly the problems you point out. Look at what it is as an MMO: brand new, entirely unique universe. several different world environments, many different methods of leveling through armor, weapons, light, and experience, a decent item structure including reputation and faction rewards, and an interesting first chapter of a story I can't wait to finish. Yes, there are lots of rough edges that need to be sanded down that I'm not going to bother to go into for time's, but overall the game is off to a good start. If they don't address some of the connectivity issues people are experiencing, especially on XBOX, I think you'll start to see a sharp and rapid population decrease, but as long as it is playable in the form that it is now and they continue to improve and finish it, this game will be highly successful. I'm glad bungie did something different instead of the same damn thing every development company does just to meet their genre's status quo. If we had more companies producing more games with this mindset, we'd have just as many failed games as we have now but we'd have a lot more diversity in the successful ones and they would be much higher quality.
