Grimoire is Not an Effective Way of Storytelling

I feel this is the same problem that the Halo games had, was that there was never any explanation to anything that was ever happening in the story. Good storytelling involves actually telling a story, not expecting people to find it all out through cards online. I have no problem with the existence of Grimoire, I absolutely love delving into lore, but what is actually present in the game is really shallow. I have no reason to want to connect with my character. The only information I'm given about 'The Last Safe City' (other than the very small tower area filled with vendors and nothing else) is that it exists. Like, really that's all. Are there people living there other than Guardians? It's implied, but how am I supposed to fight for people who, to me, are never even seen or mentioned? I know that there is more story to come but I'm kind of scared by the lack of depth I've been presented with so far. I really want to like Destiny, and it may be a superbly polished game with awesome loot I can't enjoy something so... hollow. Sorry if this was too rambly. Thoughts?

    • I can't even use it because it's some Web 2.0 garbage that has to be rendered 3D instead of just showing the information normally like any other thing would. Guess what Bungie? I got a console because my laptop sucks. Making me use the pathetic integrated graphics card to get story information is STUPID. What the hell is wrong with you guys?

      • Don't like reading the Grimoire cards on my phone. Such clumsy navigation. It's slightly better on the website. Hopefully it will be available in book form soon.

Grimoire is lore and not story and that's what people defending it need to understand. And they pretty terrible, when I look at the hive thrall I don't want to read a -blam!-ing sentence that says they're the weakest hive. No shit. I wanted to know more than that.

      • Totally agree with that. Why players could not read the Grimoire in a library ... IN THE TOWER !? There are only merchants in the tower. No real NPCs, no places to discover and learn. I love the tower but it is empty.

        • The fact that the story is not fleshed out is all right from the stand point, "You are new here, we give the orders, you follow them. If you have any questions, you aren't high enough up the chain of command to ask them." Followed up with the ability to talk to NPCs.

        • I know how you feel mate. I agree with everything you have said. Thank you for contributing and intelligent argument amongst what would often seem like fanboys.

        • You know there are different forms of story telling righ!?!? Not directly telling is an actual form of story telling, actually its a more intellectual form, invoking the recipient to piece it together and craft that which the storyteller has layed out.

          • I sort of agree. I think that the story needs to be a little more fleshed out and I'm sure it can/will be in future updates and DLC. I also think that the Grimoire would be more accessible and useful if it were available in-game and on bungie.net. Use the Ghost to "access" the data banks that are the Grimoire. As for story, I have only played through Earth, Luna (the Moon), and Venus: I understand that each individual player is the LEGEND in "Become Legend" and that we (individually) are the heroes of our own tales, but we need to start forming bonds with NPCs and VIPs in order for the story to become more reality than a faux tale. In other words, story needs to have relatable characters who we have real emotional responses to and thus who we feel psychologically connected to. Do that and this game really will become its own Legend.

          • Bungie make excellent settings - the expansiveness of the Halo expanded universe is very impressive - but boy do they do a poor job in the actual storyline department, more specifically in their games.

          • while this is an odd way of doing things and seems like an awful waste of some really cool stuff (ghost fragment:vex for just one example) i think we should all keep in mind the ball has only just started rolling lorewise, the story didn't end when you completed the available story missions, there is no reason that we won't see stuff in the grimoire coming to life in game, there are regular updates and expansions to go yet and i've no doubt that there will be expanded universe stuff, books comics, more live action.
