Quoted from IGN:
But why bother if you can't level up more? The thing is this: you can, just not through XP.
Instead, any XP you gain converts to "Motes of Light," a currency that's required to buy certain items from vendors. To actually raise your level, you need to find legendary gear that has the "light" statistic. The higher your light stat, the more you level. If said gear has upgrade slots, unlocking them with the proper components will further raise its light stat, and your level with it. That means access to higher difficulty Strikes and weekly challenges, which in turn means better loot.
But what I'm concerned about is having something to do with our new loot. Fighting the same missions over on a higher difficulty doesn't seem like much of an incentive to grind. For me, what will keep me playing, at least for a while, is unlocking the remaining skills in my Warlock's initial sub-calss, and eventually doing the same for his other. Fully exploring a class' abilities has always been a chief motivator for me, and even after completing the campaign, much of what my Voidwalker can do is still locked away.
The real endgame though, will likely be the raids for PvE players, and the Iron Banner for PvPers, but neither of those features are available just yet. The latter won't be out until October, but the first raid, Vault of Glass, opens in just five days. I'd like to experience it before posting my full review to see just how much possibility life after 20 truly holds. If it can really make people coordinate, and utilize their class' unique talents to the fullest, and Bungie gives us a steady stream of them, they could be just the thing I need to keep me glued for the near-future.
