Solved: Destiny throws connection errors every 5 to 10 minutes

Original issue: D/C by caterpillar, hawk, eel, and get dropped from xbox live every 5 to 10 minutes. Adjusted the original post to make it more read friendly What has been done so far: Xbox360 has fixed IP Google DNS Connected Xbox directly to modem/router with LAN cable LAN cable is tested and is working correctly Portforwarding has been set. Porttriggering has been set. uPNP is enabled Put xbox360 in DMZ (test did not work) Modem/Router has been set to factory default. Disabled firewall. (test did not work) Time set properly on modem/router. Cleared Xbox360 cache several times. Rebooted modem/router several times. 22-09-2014: Modem back to default mode. Tried it without any settings and xbox on DHCP mode. 60 minutes playtime Put fixed ip on xbox, put it in DMZ mode, 60 minutes playtime first time and 30 minutes after each modem reboot 23-09-2014 Called ISP to reset the modem to factory defaults. If I disconnect again, I will ask them to analyse my cabelline and modem to see if there is anything wrong with it. But as far as I can test it, there is nothing wrong with the line, it is stable and working as it should. But got to try everything right? Called ISP, nothing wrong no drops in connection speed. Formatted the Xbox reinstalled the game DId not work. All other devices are not connected while playing Destiny. If I rebooted the modem after an error, errors have decreased, but still they are showing up every 30~90 minutes. But if I dare to start Destiny after an error message, well Destiny starts to throw me out every -blam!-ing 5 minutes. Update 28-09-2014 I am so tired of the disconnect errors. That I have decided to give up for now. Even the clear cache and reboot option, does not work anymore.. Update 03-10-2014 Bought an new router: Asus RT-N66U Let my ISP put the modem into bridge mode. Was able to play almost an hour without disconnection errors. Then I logged out to do something else.

This post is the closest I've seen to the problem i'm having. Constant hawk/caterpillar errors. Though most the time it just d/cs me from Xbox Live without a Destiny error. I'm convinced this is basically a caterpillar error. My insights: - I've tried most of what you have. But I also did a painstaking log of d/cs while playing. The most common causes are incoming public events, loading new parts of the map, loading the tower. The other drops happen more in strikes than in pvp. I Want to say it happens more often during solo strikes than coop, but my data was too shallow to back this up. My theory is that there's a problem with the modem cache overflowing or a problem with the buffer. I suspect that the TCP connections are heavily used for AI and environment loading given the MMO aspect of the game. Basically, the modem (or one of the routers, possibly in the WAN) tries to reconcile lost/corrupted packets. The frequency of packet loss/corruption overwhelms the buffer, and things back up. Destiny seems to have very low tolerance for delays (I've seen as low as 2-3 sec. vs up to 10 sec for some games). So it doesn't have to spiral that far out of control before it throws an error and d/cs. Also, I live in an apartment. I'm wondering if the concentration of people on the building/area's switches affect it. It may be the physical modem itself. I'm going to try to run some trace routes to see. I'm with you on this being kind of a fun challenge. I'll let you know how it pans out. For now, I'm stuck playing only when overall traffic is low. It seems to work better then. another reason I think it's something with the ISP. UPDATE 11/7/14 Made a couple of changes, but still having the problem. It definitely happens more during peak traffic times. I added Port Triggering, which I hadn't set up yet. I'm set up with all the Xbox Live port forward/triggering ports. I haven't set up forwarding or triggering for the "Destiny" ports per dubbeledraaideur's photo above. I might have to try that. My first connection error came a couple minutes after starting a patrol on Earth. The second came 15ish minutes later when it was trying to load part of the map (again, Earth). As soon as it happened I jumped on my laptop and logged into my router. I checked out the firewall logs. Even though I've disabled firewall, it looks like there was an error. Here's a link to tho photo. I've blacked out my public IP address. https://www.dropbox.com/s/2qawirly37bizu2/Screenshot%202014-11-06%2021.23.35.png?dl=0 So it looked like something denied the inbound access request from the Destiny/Xbox Live server to my public IP. This is the first time I was able to identify the IP of the Destiny server, so I quickly ran a traceroute from my computer. Here's a link to the traceroute. Again, my public IP is blacked out. https://www.dropbox.com/s/1l5a1yuf8nxgjaw/Screenshot%202014-11-06%2021.23.43.png?dl=0 Notice hop #9 stalls for nearly 100 ms, or 1/10 of a second. This is with 52 byte packets, pretty small as far as traffic goes. Looking back at the first photo of the firewall error, the packet count on that was 85,344. That's pretty large as far as traffic goes. So what's with hop #9? It's going to a server with the DNS cogentco.com. Went to their website and they appear to provide IP Forwarding as a service. The server IP is in Arlington, VA which is close to Washington, DC where I live. A quick google search for "cogentco" and I discovered I'm not the first to have this problem. One forum (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2244867) had tons of similar examples throughout the US with different MMORPGs. What next? In a forum, a guy suggested "Use a game proxy like ping-zapper or changing ISP's...". I don't want to go through the pain of finding a new ISP, but I'm going to look into using a game proxy. I'll update you guys once I find out. Update - Later Today I bit the bullet and called Comcast. I was expecting to be connected to a mindless rep who couldn't offer much more advice than "unplug and re-plup your modem". I more or less was, but as soon as I started explaining the depth of the problem she gave me the number directly for customer hardware support. The guy I talked to was very helpful. As soon as I said I was playing Destiny he said, "Oh, yeah. I know Destiny. I know some people with other ISPs and systems who've had similar issues. We've only gotten a few calls about it." Sounded like a fellow gamer. [If you're out there, thanks, Dude!] He had one piece of advice, that I make sure I'm port-forwarding/triggering all the Destiny server ports, not just the Xbox Live ones. I explained the Cogentco thing (which apparently, I was pronouncing wrong--it's a hard G). He says that if that's the problem, they can't do anything about it. As for the VPN, my particular router has some minor problems with some VPN networks, but they could swap it out for a different modem/router if that was the case. About to tweak the port forwarding. We'll see how this works...

Out of curiosity what was your previous router? My isp gave me a Technicolor (Thompson), pretty crappy, cone-nat isn't fully implemented, and it hates p2p. As for the rt-n66u, it's a pretty solid router. If you're adventurous, there are a couple of third party (based on official) firmwares merlin-asuswrt is the most popular

        • Last update on my part. This weekend I played several hours without being disconnected. My connection issues is now completely solved :) So for people who have these issues, think about this. Do you have an modem from the ISP? And connected your xbox on that thing. Your modem is the cause of all your disconnects, it does not matter what you do to it. As long the routing is enabled, it will disconnect you. If you have an expensive router, and your modem is still in routing mode, call your ISP and ask them to put your modem in Bridge mode. This will probably solve all your connection issues. A lot of routers are tested on this site: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/router-charts/bar/77-max-simul-conn You can see how many connections your router can take, before throwing in the towel. I cannot guarantee that this will work for everyone, but if you are considering to buy an router. It might help you solve the connectivity issues. :)

        • Bought an new router: Asus RT-N66U Let my ISP put the modem into bridge mode. Was able to play almost an hour without disconnection errors. Then I logged out to do something else. This is an theory I got, why I got disconnected constantly: Destiny uses p2p to let users play. What happens with p2p, for example with downloading: is that your are directly connected to the uploaders computer. Probably it is the same here, when you are playing Destiny, there is an connection to the other people console, that are also playing Destiny.. This asks a lot of the router, because it needs to maintain all those connections. Most of the modems/routers that are delivered with the internet connections, are cheap. And cannot handle so much connections. The router I bought today, can handle 39700 connections are the same time, before it is overrun. Ow I did not buy an other router just for Destiny, my modem also threw me out of xbox live, when playing other games. ISP did not want to replace the modem, because it is an firmware issue and they are working on it...

          • Wow man. Thanks for writing all this, it made me realize I'm not alone in the frustration. I have the exact same issue as you "Hawk" and "Caterpillar" and disconnected from Xbox Live. I have tried all your steps as well. If I am lucky I get an hour between disconnects. Tonight was every 5-10 minutes. I am also on the Xbox 360. I use Shaw in Canada with a Motorola router. I am wondering what your ISP and your router model is?

Just got reply from my ISP. The firmware of the modem I got is faulty... They are working on new firmware for the modem, but they have no indication when it is going to released... An strange answer tho, because an coworker has the same modem and has no connection errors... (But one has an PS4 and an 60Mb connection and the other xbox360 with an 180Mb connection, that could be the difference, because the cache is not used as much on faster internet). One short-term option left: Test the xbox at my parents house and if it works swap the modems. My parents do not own any devices/programs that need to maintain multiple connections on an high level at the same time. Long-term option: save money for an gaming router and put the modem in bridge mode.

            • Well.... I just found out, at this moment my modem is causing the issues. When playing halo 4 I also get disconnected from halo 4 servers and sometimes from xbox live. Once 1.5 to 2 hours... I raised an ticket per webform by my ISP, to investigate this issue. They might send me an new modem if I'm lucky. (Probably all the reboots of the modem have caused issues with it).

            • Ok I thought of 1 more thing I can do. After work tomorrow, I go to my parents, with my xbox, destiny, controller and my modem. They also have Ziggo 30Mb/s, but they have an Cisco modem. If I can play for 2~3 hours. I will trade the modems. Then I know it is worth it. Damn why didn't I think of that sooner... lol Do I go far with this? Yes but I am not going to spend 140 euro's for an professional gaming/streaming router, just to play 1 game... Why does this interest me so much? Don't know, this kind of issues really are interesting to me. And it has been an while, that I had something challenging.

              • You and me both! I have done everything that you have done and I still get disconnected. I've contacted my ISP as well and everything is fine on their end. The only logical explanation is that it is an issue with the Destiny servers and hopefully it will be fixed soon. Also, It would be nice to know the status of a possible fix or if they even care.

Newest patch did not resolve the connectivity errors unfortunately. (I lost my temper yesterday evening when I was doing an strike on earth, and got d/ced. Luckily my controller survived, the crashlanding on the floor). Strangest thing of is the following: Shutdown xbox, Reboot modem and startup xbox - no solution (d/c after 5 ~ 10 minutes) Clear cache xbox and reboot xbox - no solution (d/c after 5 ~ 10 minutes) Clear cache xbox, shutdown xbox, reboot modem, startup xbox - keeps me playing for 1 to 2 hours Can anyone explain, what is could be the cause that I need to clear the xbox cache, power off the xbox and then reboot the modem. And after I rebooted the modem, I can power the xbox back on. At this moment the xbox is on DMZ mode and uPNP is enabled in the modems interface. Xbox live works fine, without Destiny

Exchanging modems is out of the question. My ISP Ziggo has customer bound modems. It is possible to exchange the modems, but that means I need to call them when changing the modem at my parents house, then I need to call them when I am at my own home. If it does not work, or it is even worse, I need to call them again 2 times, to put it back as it was. But I also found out, the modems cannot be set to factory default by interface or the reset button on the modem. So I asked them to reset my modem to factory defaults for me. If this does not work, there is only 1 option left. And that is to buy an gaming router and ask them to put the modem in bridge mode. But I not going to do this, because I not going to pay 140 euro's for an decent router, just to play this game. Because this is the only game that has issues with the connection.

Well that other modem I never got it to work, due that ziggo restricts their lines only for ziggo modems. I going to disconnect this goddamn modem and trade it in for the Cisco modem at my parents house, who also happen to have Ziggo. Hopefully this will help.. One little change in this plan: Tonight I will try to put everything on default mode, so modem on default, not assigning an ip to the xbox. One of the collegeas has the same modem, an xbox360, same ISP, but a way faster internet connection (160mb/s) He did not setup his modem in any way. And is able to play without interuptions. If this does not work for me, I will exchange the modems tomorrow.

Ow I also did an speedtest to the servers of my ISP I did it like 5 times. And no drops detected. Now I am absolutely sure, that is the cache of the modem. Below some information about the cache of the modem (I ripped off an website).
The modem contains a cache, a chip that collects data before releasing it to your computer, that sometimes become overloaded with invalid data. This invalid data can slow down your cable modem's functions and prevent it from transmitting new data. To correct the problem, you have to empty your cable modem's cache. Once the cache is reset, your cable modem will return to a working state.
• Also have it on my ps4. Got it on my 360 just because I have more friends to play with seeing as this seems more social than I though. Level 22 on ps4, server kicked out once. Right now trying to just download the 5 gigs of of content before I can even start the game. Keep getting 'Catapillar' error between 15-55% finished. Quite pissed about the situation, do not see help of any sorts from bungie, and xbox just points at bungie. All iv seen bungie say so far was letting everyone know if somebody else figure out what's wrong to let bungie know. Like common, last I heard we paid for a game that with assumption it to be working when we try and play it. Not having to dedicate my evening -blam!-ing around with xbox settings and router settings with enough acronyms to make you want to kill someone. Battlefield 4 all over again. New big game company policy, online doesn't 'have' to work for at least a month after release.

                •
Original issue: D/C by caterpillar every 5 to 10 minutes and sometimes got thrown out Xbox live Adjusted the original post to make it more read friendly ;) Well I have found the issue of all my frequent disconnects. 1st the portforwarding in my router was not working correctly. I added another type of forwarding called port triggering, it seems that portforwarding is not always working as it should be, by the Ziggo Ubee EVW321B.. 2nd I noticed my modem time was off with 1 hour. After adjusting this and rebooting, the time is now set correctly in the timezone I live. (Set timezone +2) After adjusting this, Destiny got some d/c errors in the tower and one time the game got thrown out without an errorcode lol. On the moon, where Destiny had most of the issues, It doesn't get disconnected as much as before. Also one time Destiny got an loading screen ingame, normally Destiny gets thrown out, but it continued XD I cannot tell if it solved completely and that I won't be disconnected every 5 minutes. But it looks promising. I will update again when I played tomorrow evening.
Via je web URL kan je in je router moet je je UPNP poort open zetten zins dien nooit meer problemen gehad. • Ok well this did not work either! But I got another theory, a colleague mentioned it during work. When he was downloading via torrents, he needed to reset the modem/router because the cache overflowed. Everything is setup correctly now and I still get disconnection errors. I don't know how much Destiny is using from my connection, but it seems that the cache of the modem/router overflows. Luckily I managed to get an other modem/router, so I going to give that a shot tomorrow.

I cannot get this sorted, I found yet another possibility why I get disconnected. I just found out that my modem 1 hour behind in time. This brings very very very bad memories from an time I was network/system administrator for an youth center. We had 6 netgear routers, 2 of them worked fine. 4 of them did not work, because they were 1 hour behind on the CET... And I could not get that fixed. (In the end we threw away the routers). Edit: got it solved luckily. Edit2: The connection is almost fully stable now, Got thrown out by caterpillar, but not every 5 minutes and it was not during an mission luckily :) I will summarize what I have done in the 1st post.

                    • Well yesterday I resetted my router, directly linked my Xbox to my modem without an switch and tested the connection. Ofcourse nat errors because of firewall blockage. Loaded in the portforwarding file and tested again the connection. Then I pressed Y after the connection test (which indicated I was connected). and then I saw this beauty of an error pop-up.(see screenshot). All this time, the standard firewall rules are loaded in, which only allows 2 ports to be forwarded from Xbox live (and some other default ports). It seems my modem does not want to connect fully with Xbox live. Even if the firewall logs tell me there is nothing being blocked.... I couldn't get that issue resolved in the first time, so I ignored the error and tried to play on the moon (patrol), and got an d/c every 5 minutes (xbox live, catarpillar, hawk etc). Playing on the earth (also patrol), did not give any issues for 1 hours and 15 minutes. Then went to the tower and then back to earth, but then I got an d/c After that I tried several hours to get this issue sorted. I resetted the DHCP IP range and adjusting the IP of my xbox and portforwarding. But now my wonderfull ubee evw321b modem is like Gandalf: YOU SHALL NOT PASS!! Tonight I going to start all over again with my wonderfull modem, to see if I can get it fixed

I even to get Xbox Live gold subscription, to see if I get more "priority" on the destiny servers. But that also does not work. But now I can play Halo 4 Spartan Ops, so I have that going for me, which is nice. Hopefully the hotfix they released will help, to get the connectivity errors to an minimum.
