Groups are somewhat private forums that users may join to connect with a particular set of people. This might range from a group of friends, to other players with similar interests, or just a way of separating their conversations from the rest of b.net. Clans are an extension of that group and allow for players in Destiny to quickly find each other, coordinate for raids, strikes, or just find other players to play with in fireteams. They are there to add to Destiny. I posted a rather lengthy explanation of why groups/clans are a thing in another thread not too long ago, so if you're interested....
Right now, it looks like clans are meant to be close knit groups of people who are willing to help each other out as a part of fireteams. It is easier than the friends list on Xbox Live and PSN and also allows it to be more of a team game rather than a bunch of random dudes who just happen to be friends. Kind of like making a sports team or creating a banner to fly; it builds unity. For strikes and raids, wherein the difficulty is raised and the goal is a bit loftier, having a closer group or enough of a pool of people to choose from has numerous benefits. On top of that, with the clans being based here on b.net, you are able to connect with your members more readily and easily, schedule times for raids and runs at the crucible. However, they are definitely not required. I actually met a few people outside of my clan when running around the world and in the matchmaking, one of which I am looking very forward to running through the entire game with, regardless of which clan she joins. More than anything, it is a little like a safe-haven for those who want to know they are not alone in the game and are willing to play as a team. It doesn't mean that they need to tag along all the time, but they are there when you want/need them, and you will be there for them if they call.
See you starside.
