Group Wall / Private Message / Conversation Feedback

So for those of you who aren't aware, Bungie has apparently been tinkering with the website over the past couple of days and one of the newest additions is a feature which makes Group Walls actually useful. Group Walls now manifest themselves as a Private Message conversation that the entire group can participate in by either replying to the wall or by replying to the private messages. It makes groups more accessible and makes people more aware of general happenings within the group. Personally I'm rather fond of the feature, I always thought group walls were super silly but in this form they're terribly useful because they make groups way more accessible. Rather than having to go to my group list, find a group I want to check in on, click on the forums, and then see if there are any new threads that have been posted since I last checked, I instantly see activity in the upper right hand of my screen which let's me know what's going on. However, I wouldn't say it's perfect, I've heard reports of people's phones exploding with notifications in the middle of the night, complaints that there's no way to opt out of the conversations aside from leaving the group / having the group's founder disable the wall, and several other problems with the PM system. Personally I think that it would be useful if these "Group Conversations" had their own dedicated icon in the upper right hand of the Website UI to seperate them from normal People PMs and Multi-People PMs as the latters tend to get drowned out by the much more frequent group conversations. What do you guys think? What do you like and value most about the feature? What do you think could use work? If there's any specific bugs or glitches, feel free to report them with the Bug Submission Form either in this thread or in a seperate thread. Edit: To elaborate, by having it's own icon category, users would be able to go into their notification settings and configure whether or not they want to receive notifications / alerts for it. Edit 2: Now with Concept Art! I wanted to mock up what my idea for a seperate icon my look like visually in Microsoft Paint, the king of hastily made mock up programs. The key aspect of this design is that rather than indicating activity with a red number that indicates how many unread messages you've had like the normal PM system, the Group Conversation icon glows a calming shade of cyan to indicate that there is unread activity in any number of your groups. I think I'm not alone when I say that seeing unread notifications or private messages in the upper right causes me some amount of anxiety, I feel compelled to check it out whenever there's activity. However, I don't think users want to be alerted like this whenever a pin drops in their private group, the thing I value the most about this feature is that it makes current happenings in my groups super accessible but I don't need to know every little thing that has been said in them immediately upon posting. The blue glow lets me know that there's stuff going on, and if I feel so inclined, I can check it out. Oh yeah, also there's a bug where if someone posts on a wall and then the group's founder disables the wall feature before you can click and view the PM it is permanently in your private message box as unread with no way to read it.

  • I fully agree with the whole group chats having their own icon section. It would make things so much cleaner. Also, that whole mobile cutoff issue, but that's a different issue entirely.
Over.
I can see how some people don't like it, but I personally do. I think it's a neat feature, but there really should be a way to switch it on or off.

      • It's -blam!-ing cancer and I hate it with every fiber of my being. If I want to talk on a Group's wall, then I'll talk there, I don't want my PM box being lit up like a Huey in Vietnam everytime I come on this site.

        • Now people who I rather not see on the forums can spam in my inbox, unless I'm willing to leave groups that I actually am fond of. Muting also doesn't make them go away.

        • Why does Bungie hate private groups so much?

        • Just make a Wall section in the app for Groups. This is the most annoying feature I've come across in a long time. One group I'm in had a wall post done back in July. The wall was disabled, but I keep getting the same notification. I attempted to leave the conversation and the app crashed.

        • While the incorporation of PMs into the group wall has made the feature immensely more useful, it's a new feature that needs a little bit of tweaking. Having notifications for the chat is nice, but having constant notifications that are indistinguishable from PMs can be a little annoying. I feel that Hylebos' suggestion of having a separate notification system for group walls could be an effective way of managing an excellent new feature, as it will keep message notifications reserved for private messages while still notifying the user of group activity.

          • Ok, that would explain the PM message and no message. I found a clan item in my past conversations. I never saw it before. I like it. Thx.

          • And here I was thinking that with group join requests going to both notifications and my PM box, PMs were already inaccessible to me. Boy was I wrong- now they're TWICE as inaccessible.

            • I'm not having any issue with this cut off on mobile (android, S4), but I do see "error: no user" instead of the group name. Also, as far as opting out goes, I think a sort of "snooze" button would be ideal. Be able to dismiss updates for the next 24 hours, week, or entirely. The biggest issue is people using the walls as a chat service, and being able to snooze any notifications for the next 24 hours would be a good way to combat that.

              • Hey quick question... So I'm on the app (for iOS) and when I get a PM that is as long, or longer, than two lines, it will cut off the last line of the message. So if anyone knows what I can do to fix it please let me know.

Worst idea ever. Some kind of toggle notification would be great, because I don't want them.

I agree, a separate icon would be better. And as has been mentioned, a toggle for whether or not a group's wall should notify you like this would be nice. I only have 2 or 3 groups I'd actually like to see it for. I am also slightly annoyed that I can't get rid of my message notification for one of the groups because it has been set to "admin only".

                  • I like how it makes group walls a little more noticeable, but it does need some tweaking like others have mentioned. Having some way to toggle it or a separate icon in the upper right hand corner would be nice.

                    • It is a good idea, but needs to be an option to mute select ones or all. I have lost members due to this PM overload annoyance.
