Group Wall / Private Message / Conversation Feedback

So for those of you who aren't aware, Bungie has apparently been tinkering with the website over the past couple of days and one of the newest additions is a feature which makes Group Walls actually useful. Group Walls now manifest themselves as a Private Message conversation that the entire group can participate in by either replying to the wall or by replying to the private messages. It makes groups more accessible and makes people more aware of general happenings within the group. Personally I'm rather fond of the feature, I always thought group walls were super silly but in this form they're terribly useful because they make groups way more accessible. Rather than having to go to my group list, find a group I want to check in on, click on the forums, and then see if there are any new threads that have been posted since I last checked, I instantly see activity in the upper right hand of my screen which let's me know what's going on. However, I wouldn't say it's perfect, I've heard reports of people's phones exploding with notifications in the middle of the night, complaints that there's no way to opt out of the conversations aside from leaving the group / having the group's founder disable the wall, and several other problems with the PM system. Personally I think that it would be useful if these "Group Conversations" had their own dedicated icon in the upper right hand of the Website UI to seperate them from normal People PMs and Multi-People PMs as the latters tend to get drowned out by the much more frequent group conversations. What do you guys think? What do you like and value most about the feature? What do you think could use work? If there's any specific bugs or glitches, feel free to report them with the Bug Submission Form either in this thread or in a seperate thread. Edit: To elaborate, by having it's own icon category, users would be able to go into their notification settings and configure whether or not they want to receive notifications / alerts for it. Edit 2: Now with Concept Art! I wanted to mock up what my idea for a seperate icon my look like visually in Microsoft Paint, the king of hastily made mock up programs. The key aspect of this design is that rather than indicating activity with a red number that indicates how many unread messages you've had like the normal PM system, the Group Conversation icon glows a calming shade of cyan to indicate that there is unread activity in any number of your groups. I think I'm not alone when I say that seeing unread notifications or private messages in the upper right causes me some amount of anxiety, I feel compelled to check it out whenever there's activity. However, I don't think users want to be alerted like this whenever a pin drops in their private group, the thing I value the most about this feature is that it makes current happenings in my groups super accessible but I don't need to know every little thing that has been said in them immediately upon posting. The blue glow lets me know that there's stuff going on, and if I feel so inclined, I can check it out. Oh yeah, also there's a bug where if someone posts on a wall and then the group's founder disables the wall feature before you can click and view the PM it is permanently in your private message box as unread with no way to read it.

  • It is too confusing and it made me think I was popular. It needs to die in a fire. Or at least be made optional.

    • With the number of people who I presume are disabling/don't want to be notified in the same way as normal PMs, I think there's an added incentive to implement @name based notifications.

      • What if you had a separate section just for group walls? Something next to messages would be useful, and it could show all of the groups/clans you're a part of and view them. Notifications wouldn't really be needed.

      • I came here to complain about a private message I can't clear because of this new feature. Thanks for the write up! I agree with all of your suggestions! Bungie please listen to this dude.

      • I love the new feature, its a big hit in my group. My problem is semi related, whenever someone requests to join my group I get a message in my inbox, rather frustrating trying to find actual messages in all the clutter. I disabled all group request notifications in my settings but still get a message in my inbox, it now has only a username a blank body in the text field.

      • I concur. Since the change I have been inundated with useless messages and have simply stopped checking my private messages. If Bungie added the capability to regulate how we receive messages, delete function, and who we receive notification from I would definitely consider giving it another try. However, as it stands now, I have decided on leaving certain groups in order to significantly cut-down on the needless message traffic.

This feature needs to be fixed, and asap. As it stands, this is total bullshit. I don't want this garbage in my private messages. I'd be fine with an unobtrusive separate icon for this, assuming I could choose which groups I wanted these notifications from in said icon. Oh, and while you're at it Bungie, fix the rest of the site too. It's been a steaming wreck for far too long, and it's ridiculous. Of course, this thread will probably be ignored, and this feature will stay broken like it is now for months on end.

            • A small thing with the Android app (Nexus 7), when I am looking at the Conversations list and I see a group wall has new messages then I see the word 'new' in blue (ok so far). I then tap that entry in the list to show the group wall posts for that group to see the new messages (all good). But when I go back to the Conversations list using either the Apps back button (next to the tricorn at the top left of the screen) or using the standard Android soft back button (bottom of the screen) then the word 'new' in blue is still displayed for that Groups wall posts. If I now tap the back button to come out of the Conversations section entirely, then go back into the Conversations section by tapping the envelope icon then the word 'new' has now correctly disappeared so I know I have read that Groups Wall posts. • I would like a simple check box to decide which groups flash up, since some groups I want to be in but not see every post on the wall. Also the whole unread message bug you mentioned is really annoying since I have a perpetually unread message. :(

Group walls are waaaaaay too active to make it something that gives you a notification every time there is a new post. I think of group walls as a baseline chatter kind of off topic thread for your groups, something that when you check in you just scroll through it to see whats been going on then move on. At least give us an option to deactivate the group wall as part of our message system.

            • I actually really like incoperating the wall as an ongoing group message. However, its current format doesnt work. Lock in seperate controls for this internally on B.net and mobile app so that we can have total control over notifications and we should be ready to go. Namely... -- I want to get a message notification on B.net and on my phone when I get an actual PM, and I dont want the group-wall-message to create any type of notification whatsoever (but I do want access to it) -- I dont want to participate this in all the groups I am in, so let me leave or individually diable the group-wall-message without leaving the group and without disableing wall access directly through B.net Keep on tinkering!

              • It's an interesting feature but it has the trouble of you can't get rid of the notification icon. 2 of the groups im in disabled the feature after a message was sent, now i can't view the wall as it's disabled so i have a perpetual (2) on the message icon. It's rather annoying to constantly be told i have messages which i can't read, and no button to "clear message notifications".

              • Yes puhlease Hylebos, I like that idea, the ability to all together mute this box would be equally as fantastic, there are groups that I am a part of, do I want to see all of their walls? no, no I certainly do not, make unsubscribing take care of this for me, so I can remain a member but not receive wall updates.

              • I like the new feature, and I have noticed that there are some members in my group that have become more active on our wall because they now have access to it on their phone. However, like Hylebos and others that have commented, I do think it needs some work. I am in a small group and we use the wall to facilitate conversations that don't necessarily need their own forum posts, so I like the option to incorporate the wall as an ongoing PM. However, I had to leave a few larger groups that I am less active in because my phone was constantly going off. I like the idea that Hylebos proposed (adding a new icon), but I would just prefer an option to enable the group wall as PMs within the group. I think it would be easiest, and larger groups wouldn't have the problem of members leaving in order to disable the messages.

              • While the incorporation of PMs into the group wall has made the feature immensely more useful, it's a new feature that needs a little bit of tweaking. Having notifications for the chat is nice, but having constant notifications that are indistinguishable from PMs can be a little annoying. I feel that Hylebos' suggestion of having a separate notification system for group walls could be an effective way of managing an excellent new feature, as it will keep message notifications reserved for private messages while still notifying the user of group activity.

I have an issue of the 'Group Wall' being set to 'disabled' by one of my group's admins. The main problem I have is that the last message that was posted there is un-viewable (since I'm not an admin of the group) and still registers as a notification. I can't access the highlighted message because I don't have permission to view the message (or wall), and I can't remove the conversation since it's a group message, so the notification stays there and I am unable to get rid of it. There's also not yet an option to 'unfollow wall post messages' and so I'm currently being spammed with messages on groups with 1000+ members writing on the wall in conversations that I have no part of. If there was an option to 'mute conversation' so message spam doesn't come up with a notification every time or even to not appear as a message, that would be nice too. Edit: If there was a separate icon for Group messages and Personal Messages, that would be good; with the option to op-out (unfollow) certain group's messages in either the group 'user actions' tab, or notification settings. Edit 2: That 'Blue Glow' idea is great, as long as it's in a separate 'tab' icon for group chat and not still in messages. Concept Art is a masterpiece though, needs framing! That 'Disabled wall bug' is still really annoying but the cyan button will fix most of my problems, as long as you can click on it and the cyan disappears: I'm OCD like that.

              • I think it's a great idea, but I would like a way to unsubscribe. I'm in a lot of groups that I like to check in on from time to time, but I don't want notifications from those groups' walls.

I like the feature. Like others have said if a separate icon could appear to the right of our name then that would be a great addition. I have gone into my notification settings and disabled the push messages option. I believe that should be the fix for people complaining that their phones are blowing up in the middle of the night. The only bad thing I'm experiencing on the app and full website is the red 2 always staying up there. I don't think its a bug though because those 2 groups have disabled their group wall.

              • I like how it makes group walls a little more noticeable, but it does need some tweaking like others have mentioned. Having some way to toggle it or a separate icon in the upper right hand corner would be nice.
