Gaming Personas

I thought I'd indulge and share in some insight. The topic of discussion is Gaming Personas. Everyone who plays video games has them. Some have the characteristics of different personas. But in summary, the many personas fall into four categories. 1. Killer 2. Achiever 3. Socializer 4. Explorer Let's break them down even further, shall we? Killer - This persona wants to win, and win at all cost. There are many types of this persona, hardcore, competitive, griefer & hacker being the most prominent. The Killer could be someone who actually has legitimate skill at the game in question, or they could be someone who uses cheats and exploits to gain an advantage. The end all is they play to win. Nothing else matters but their W/L record and their K/D ratio. While most are not inherently disruptive, the vocal minority of this persona category will brag & boast of their skill, and belittle anyone who's stats aren't as high as their own. It's for this reason that The Killer as a whole is typically looked upon in a negative light. They're most prominent in FPS, Sports and some Fighting games. Achiever - The Achiever wants it all. Playing a game to it's story completion is not enough. They want to do and experience everything the game has to offer. Much like The Killer, Some Achievers aren't above bending a few rules and using exploits or cheats to reach their goal, though that's very few an far between. Though they may earn every achievement/trophy, they may miss out on subtle aspects of the gaming experience other personas don't because they're so fixated on 100% completion. Usually anti-social, The Achiever often plays alone, unless part of the achievement needed is to play with others. When that's the case, they'll usually call upon other Achievers to partake in the task, then when completed, go on their separate ways. They're most prominent in Action/Adventure, Sports, Fighting and some FPS games. Socializer - This persona likes having friends. LOTS of friends. Usually across more then 1 game. The Socializer can share traits with the other personas, but seldom does those traits overshadow the fact that they play the game for one purpose: fun. They don't care about unlocking everything, having high K/D ratios and winning all the type. Their focus is enjoying the game and connecting with others that do the same. The Socializer doesn't take the game seriously...it's a game after all. The social experience of meeting and playing with others is the biggest reward for them, and when those others share the same interest, it's even better. They're prominent in any game that has a multi-player component. Explorer - The Explorer plays games for their escapism. They spend the most time traversing the games content to know all of the secrets. They can be Achievers, but seldom do they explore for the sake of a trophy. In fact, they usually do so just for the purpose of experiencing things in the game the other three personas miss. They're prone to watch every cutscene, listen to every bit of dialog, and spend hours traveling to every corner of the world the game presents to them, completely amercing themselves in it. It's most common to see the Explorer/Socializer personas mix with each other then any other combination, as the experience of exploration tends to bring the social element to the forefront. They're most prominent in open world MMOs, open world sandbox and RPGs. As you can see, the spectrum is quite wide. I myself am an Explorer/Socializer. I have been a Killer in other games such as MAG, BF3, Brink and so on, but these days I just play to have fun, dive into the world the game provides me and meet people who enjoy doing the same.

 • I think my previous comment was a bit short given your effort so thought I should chat more. I used to think about this sort of thing and wrote an article about it myself similar to yours but mine was a bit more intricate and I think I had six subclasses which were all about winning rather than engaging which yours are. The actual answer will never be found because their are countless variations and hormonal modes but there is one true anectodal assertion about it. There are good players, bad players and indecisive ones who never find out which they are.

 • That's funny because you act more like a debater.
