I think we are losing sight as to what "competitive" means

A lot of you are complaining about Destiny not being competitive because of no private matches. You are fools. A group of 6 organized players vs another group of 6 organized players is no more competitive than a group of 6 regular players vs 6 regular players. All forms of a Player vs another Player is competitive. Im sorry, but technically, (gotta love technicalities) a clan of 6 is still random. 6 random people form together to make a clan. 6 random people form together to make a clan. They fight each other. No matter how you look at it, everyone can be considered random players. Oh, my clan of 6 vs your clan of 6? Guess what, you dont know the enemy, they are still randoms. Randoms who just formed together. The reason Destiny is labeled Competitive by Bungie is because, the gameplay itself is competitive. Gameplay in games like CoD is shit, but somehow its considered competitive when Two groups of 6 organized players play in a Private match? As compared to two groups of six playing in player match? One is no more competitive than the other. But, back to why Destiny is competitive. Its competitive because the higher level you go, the crazier shit gets. Imagine a lobby of max leveled players (somewhere in 30s?) with legendary/exotic gear with full out skills and abilities fighting? The verticality of super jumping as Hunters or Gliding as Titans/Warlocks, the nova bombs or titan smashes or titan bombs, or golden gun, bladedancer, all being use. Nonetheless the perks of your weapons and armor and self adding in that intense play. The idea of competitive is 30 something vs a lvl 5. That lvl 5 has to majorly compete. I know dmg and armor ratings are turned off for normal crucible; but weapon/armor/self perks are very much enabled. But the verticality will add much more competitive play than your shitty horizontal CoD. Again, a Private match of two 6 player teams is no more competitive than a Player match of two 6 player teams.

      • Is a heavy weight boxer in the ring with a feather weight considered competitive? Is a made match of teams of like specs more competitive than that? The arguments presented so far by those who come from past PVP matches in other games are ridiculous.

      • Lol no, this is YOUR definition of competitive. Since you want to get into "technicalities" a clan is defined by the following, "a group of close-knit and interrelated families (especially associated with families in the Scottish Highlands)" or simply, "a group with a strong common interest." 6 random people together DOES NOT make a clan.
A group of 6 organized players vs another group of 6 organized players is no more competitive than a group of 6 regular players vs 6 regular players.
See this is where you are also wrong because technically 6v6 of organized players are organized for a reason, they practice and face of the opponents because there is a reward (knowing YOUR CLAN is better, money, or anything else that falls under the category of rewards.) Coming in here like you're superior and that your opinion is the right thing to think,
haaa! Ignorance.
• If you play with random people how do you make strategies and talk to them ? + you can have random beginners with you instead of your skillful clan friends. I think I missed something because what you wrote didn't make sense to me.

        • Being competitive has nothing to do with being at a high level, is all about skill and what you bring to your team to the game. Destiny's not competitive because it just seems like whoever worked on the crucible just took players characters from the cooperative campaign to competitive without think so much as to balancing weapons. It just seems there throwing players campaign characters in map and saying "fight each other". On a side note, private matches seems like a feature you would think would be in the game or at least some form of customs to get in some practice with friends.

technicality is not of the matter in that case. Words develop their own meaning in communities, ranging from friends to whole languages, all the time. Technically "Spiel" is just German for "game" yet it means something completely different in English. In the gaming scene competitive means organized. Random matchmaking is not organized. Matchmaking would be fine if there were ways to matchmake team vs. team, with ranking in place, seasons would be advisable as well to make it entry friendly. Random matchmaking will take levels and maybe even gear into consideration so you won't be pitted against lvl 5s, verticality also isn't an argument with Titanfall already available and Advanced Warfare coming this year.

        • Clans are not random people lol. You can create a clan where you only allow kids with a 3.0 kdr to join. That is far from random. Nor is it very competitive when these friends play against a team of truly random players. They will win almost every game and it will be a blowout. Real competitive players actually like facing another team where the victory is not certain. Where you win by the slightest bit. Those are the best games and the most rewarding.

        • Competitive, by definition requires the ability of competitions. If I can't set up a bracket and make a tournament with teams, it isn't competitive. As someone that doesn't get into competitive gaming, even I understand this.

dude. you're both right and wrong. yes people get the definition of competitive wrong. but so do you.
But, back to why Destiny is competitive. Its competitive because the higher level you go, the crazier shit gets.
wtf is dis shyet?! that is the most uneducated definition of competition ive ever seen. also max lvl is 20, which i believe they have established quite firmly. whats all dis bout the 30s? you also got the part wrong about the lvl 5. a lvl 5 has an equal(or mostly equal) opportunity to do good in the game because they remove the lvl bonuses that would be incredibly different between the lvls. competitive: of, pertaining to, involving, or decided by competition competition: the act of competing; rivalry for supremacy, a prize, etc. therefore, anything relating to competion. (pvp in general) is competitive. Destiny is competitive because involves competition. #dictionaryOP #needsnerf #hashtags4life EDIT: #checkyourselfb4youwreckyourself

            • Just a question. Are all player matches equally competitive? Even those when the opposing team doesn't move? Or what if the opposing team intentionally throws the match? Are those just as competitive?

                    •
Wow, kinda surprising to see a gaming forum so out of touch in what defines a competitive multiplayer experience in today's context. Yes, if you follow the strict definition itself you're going to end up saying that the multiplayer is competitive. However this is not within context. While it's true to the definition, the actual competitive gaming crowd is going to largely disagree with you. Operating by that definition you could call Mario Party 8 a competitive game, and believe me when I say it's a rarity for anyone in the competitive scene to agree to something like that. Because the definition listed is as broad as it is, the competitive community has taken on its own version of that word. Agree with the result or not, they do not operate by the one listed. The things the OP listed all detract from a competitive experience because they all bar incentive to continue, and an incentive to win. One thing he listed bars part of the competition in its entirety. Competitive multiplayers of today's standard supply you with both without holding you back from obtaining those goals. Actually I take that back. They will hold you back in one way and only one way - by the opponent's abilities matched against your own. This is key to the competitive community's view on competition. What results from the match is what drives the player forward to become a better player and receive rewards for eventually being just that. That is in a summarized way, the definition the competitive community abides by. Basically, it's a slang version of the word "competitive." -Teh Puma
