Competitive Multiplayer Not Actually Competitive

Bungie claims their multiplayer to be competitive, but let's take a look at why it's the exact opposite: 1. No game chat -serious Bungie? 2. Rewards are random -no incentives to play well 3. No ranking system -where's the ranking system? It's just another cod play and get a high level "ranking" system 4. No private matches -lel Feel free to add other reasons. From what I see, Destiny does not have competitive multiplayer, but a casual, boring, will get old in a month type of multiplayer. For the people who don't get it:

Wow, kinda surprising to see a gaming forum so out of touch in what defines a competitive multiplayer experience in today's context. Yes, if you follow the strict definition itself you're going to end up saying that the multiplayer is competitive. However this is not within context. While it's true to the definition, the actual competitive gaming crowd is going to largely disagree with you. Operating by that definition you could call Mario Party 8 a competitive game, and believe me when I say it's a rarity for anyone in the competitive scene to agree to something like that. Because the definition listed is as broad as it is, the competitive community has taken on its own version of that word. Agree with the result or not, they do not operate by the one listed. The things the OP listed all detract from a competitive experience because they all bar incentive to continue, and an incentive to win. One thing he listed bars part of the competition in its entirety. Competitive multiplayers of today's standard supply you with both without holding you back from obtaining those goals. Actually I take that back. They will hold you back in one way and only one way - by the opponent's abilities matched against your own. This is key to the competitive community's view on competition. What results from the match is what drives the player forward to become a better player and receive rewards for eventually being just that. That is in a summarized way, the definition the competitive community abides by. Basically, it's a slang version of the word "competitive." -Teh Puma

• How about this: Bungie has a specific vision for Destiny that, at present, doesn't seem to include these things you think you want. It may be that the entire experience of the game is better for the lack of these things. It could be that the intention is for this game to focus on co-op rather than competitive. It could be adding these things will damage some overall aspect of the game that Bungie is trying to keep intact. It could be that they will add these things later if the experience isn't working the way they want. These threads all seem to start with the supposition that all of these things definitely make FPS PVP better, which is opinion based on your preferences and limited information of what the entirety of Destiny has to offer. While people may enjoy these features, it's just possible that the way it is set up is the best arrangement for this specific game. Or maybe some of these things will be in the final game, who knows. Seriously, either play and enjoy the game Bungie has created, or don't. Maybe you will like it without all those things you think you want. Maybe you won't. If you don't want to risk the money, go play something else until you read a few reviews. But saying it isn't competitive just because it doesn't have all the features you think it should have is kinda pointless.

  • Competitive: of or relating to competition. Destiny's multiplayer is competitive. Rankings and chats don't make something competitive.

  • Main MP Concern: Less survivability based on true skill. Most likely if I want to have a hardcore match were I go like 20 kills 1 or 2 deaths its IMPOSSIBLE. Why? Because at any moment a super can be used to insta kill me. And everyone is gonna have thier super just when I come around and end my flow. There shuld be a mode without supers. I like to throw the enemy off in matches so everytime I did in the beta ppl would shit there pants and super me before they died.

I see where you are coming from. I totally agree about private matches. I personally don't know how much I'd use it but I know for competitive clans to fight its a must and I do believe we will see it in the future. Chat is one of those things I can agree with parts of both sides of the issue. I hate game ruining kids in chat so I like not even having to deal with them. Communication is key though and if everyone works together that's when real great games happen. I suppose if you are in a clan and already set up in a party with 5 other teammates the crucible chat problem is a non issue. As for rewards I'd like to see a mix. I'm not the best player I'll be the first to admit it so I would like to be able to access some of that great loot too. Perhaps for a particularly good game compared to my personal stats. I don't know if that's possible but if it were I think that would be a good compromise. Lastly ranking sounds interesting. I wouldn't want to see something that makes it more stressful than fun. But to be honest with modes like the iron banner and the implementation of crucible marks there is already somewhat of a rank system in Destiny. Certain gear can only be acquired in certain ways. If you want that amazing sniper rifle from lord saladin you're gonna have to work for it. And when I see someone all decked out in iron banner gear in the tower I'm immediately going to know that person will be a beast in the iron banner and that I don't want to mess with him. So I'd say with ranking we just need to see what's available as far as distinguishing ourselves as crucible masters in the full game. Also there is a place on bungie.net where your crucible stats are put up against those on your friends list in which case this is a ranking system between your friends and or clan. There are also websites that have all the stats that can rank you amongst every player out there in every different stat imaginable. It's pretty cool and for me in some cases depressing haha.

    • Well they want to make sure they have their multiplayer matchmaking system working before they implement private matches. And also I feel it would be wrong to lump all the multiplayer maps together for this and not focus merely on the Iron Banner where the more competitive players are supposed to duke it out. They are just getting going and will need time to see what the community does with the weapons/powers/classes before they have an idea of how they want to make a truly competitive multiplayer experience in game that has a cooperative story/strike mission at it's core. Although I still think it's wrong to completely dismiss Destiny as a competitive experience while still loosely maintaining your core points. This first launch title is so many things that they need an active community so that each team can properly flesh out each aspect accordingly.

    • 1: Game chat is not needed. Destiny will not become like CoD where there are 12 year olds saying how they -blam!-ed your mother. 2: Rewards are random. Just like in PvE. The incentive is to have fun fighting other guardians and getting stuff as well! No other multiplayer shooter has loot in PvP. It's more than just mindless shooting. 3: Yes there is no ranking system. And there shouldn't be. The levels are about the closest to a ranking system you can get. Another fact that separates Destiny from other shooters. You just don't need it. 4: Private Matches. Yes I agree they should have it, but is it going to get much use? Probably not that much. So Destiny is actually a lot more competitive than other shooters. I.E. CoD, Battlefield, Halo, etc...

      • I'd like to see private matches, but the rest I couldn't care less about. 1. Game chat is something I've never used unless playing with friends. More often than not you've got randoms blasting shitty music, arguing with someone, screeching about getting killed, etc. I'm perfectly fine with a team of silent yet companionable allies. 2. So what if rewards are random? It's just a little extra incentive to play, the real reason to shoot for a high score is glimmer. The more kills and points you get, the more glimmer you'll acquire. And to be honest, PvP is a bit more fun than grinding to get the same resource. 3. I see no need for a ranking system, more often than not it's just numbers. Unless you're talking something more akin to League of Legend's ranked system, in which case I will gladly go without it. I'm sorry but ranked in that sense is more stressful than fun, and damn me to hell if I want to have fun in a video game right? All in all, Destiny is actually a game with a high propensity for high level competitive play. Balanced maps designs, with clear objectives and sub-objectives (think heavy ammo and vehicles) to control, and on top of that there's a wealth of different play styles, all of which are viable. Destiny has the ability to become a highly competitive ESport is Bungie is willing to add private matches and push the envelope enough by publicizing important matches.

You know what makes something competitive? The desire to beat your opponent. That's it. Bungie is clearly leaning towards co op gameplay in Destiny. We're supposed to be playing as a united force. If everyone spends their time killing each other for a place on the board it can lead to rivalries that hinder the intended experience of the game. Compete for fun but stand together, seems to be the idea here.

      • Aside from private matches I don't think any of these are needed in Destiny. But private matches are a must if clans want to have a skirmish between itself, or if people want to mess around with friends or something. But talking with randoms? No thanks I have a fire team . Random loot? Exactly, that's one of the main ideals behind the entire game. No ranks? It's called levels, these are a thing quite common in RPG type games like Destiny.

      • Back in the day, competing in games was all about seeing who could get the highest score in Pac-Man or Donkey Kong. And I just Googled it to confirm neither of those games contained a chat system, a global ranking system, rewards, or private matches. Neither did early fighter games. Your definition of competitive multiplayer is games really only made since the internet became as big as it is. That's not very long ago.

      • I feel that this game is more PVE than pvp. Like once I'm done with all the raiding in just going to casually play in the crucible until something else pops up. Or at least that's how I see it.

It's designed for casuals. Halo 2 and 3 were competative. Destiny is designed for a younger easy going audience.

        • Your tears are delicious. It's great when people don't understand why private lobbies aren't going to be there at launch.
it will eventually be implemented, crying isn't doing you any good, unless you enjoy appearing like a whiney, teary eyed -blam!- to random strangers. They know we want private lobbies. They just prioritized core gameplay over private lobbies. Calm your tits.
