I'm pretty sure this was just an unfortunate accident. Those tracks have lights but are still pretty dark. Those cars don't have the best visibility either. Plus those cars apparently aren't easy to steer and you use the throttle to help with steering. Also here's a quote that should help explain things better.
"For those not in the know, nearly all cars have what is known as a differential - a clump of gears that lets one wheel spin faster than the other, while still applying power to both. This is important because when the vehicle is turning a corner, the outside wheel follows a longer path than the inside wheel - if the wheels were forced to turn at the same speed, one would have to drag and/or skip across the pavement to make up the difference. Tires are designed specifically not to drag, skip and such (lose traction), so this would put a lot of wear on the tires, strain the mechanical bits of the car, and generally make turning more difficult... Keep turning difficulty in mind. Unless a limited slip differential or solid axle is used, when one tire breaks traction, all the available engine power goes to spinning up that one wheel - the "peg leg" burn-out. Obviously this is a bad thing in a racing situation, and would be a frequent problem on a low-traction dirt race track. A limited slip differential would mean additional weight, complexity and cost, so they simply use a solid rear axle and drift (let both rear wheels break traction) around the corners. To compensate for this loss of traction when cornering, they use huge rear tires. So... What happens when you combine huge tires (lots of traction) with a solid axle (difficult to turn) and reduced speed (due to yellow flag, resulting in still more traction)? The car becomes very difficult to turn (known as understeer). In fact, it would become far easier to turn by revving the engine to break the rear wheels lose (power-induced oversteer). So, Stewart comes around the corner, the car in front of him dodges out of the way, revealing a road-raging driver running out in the track. Stewart tries to dodge: He turns the wheel and blips the throttle to get the car to rotate... To point in the right direction so when it regains traction it will miss the object (driver) he's trying to avoid. It was simply too late and/or driver too far out in the track for the physics to play out. The result? Driver gets hit by the rear tire."
I don't like Tony because the guy is a bit of a ass, but it was both of their fault. Kevin walked a bit too much into the track and Tony was acting like a dick causing the kid to get killed. Like said, Kevin had to be pissed after he was cut off so he sure as hell wasn't thinking soundly and those spring cars are -blam!-ing fragile so he had to get out.

  • Did he honestly walk out... onto a -blam!-ing race track? What the hell was the bastard expecting to happen?

Stupid bastard had it coming for stepping out of his car and onto a track where others were going 90mph.

    • Lol @ the people in this thread who think the dude who died was mentally coherent enough to make sound decisions after ending up in a wreck. Guy was probably in a fog and had no idea where he was. Not saying it's Stewart's fault, but there could be valid reasons the other guy walked to the middle of the track.

    • Heard it on the radio earlier today. For the most part I think it was the victim's fault.

    • Unless Tony went out of his way to hit Kevin, he's not at fault here.

I dunno, he revved his engine at the end there and looks like he veered slightly towards him. Probably meant to scare the guy but ended up clipping him.

      • No he didn't. Its an accident. You must not know much about racing. The fact that he is strapped in, its the middle of the night, no lights, can't move his head all point to it being an accident.

That's awful, but why the hell did he get out of the car and walk towards the middle of the track? The first car barely missed him and from that camera angle I can't judge how well Stewart could see him, him wearing black at night after all.

        • I dont see how any if this is tony stewarts fault. The dude got out of his car and walked WAY too far away from it. I dont know what he thought he was gonna do, but he ended up dead

        • Ward was acting dumb by walking out onto the track I mean seriously what was his thought process? "There are all of the race cars going as fast as they can..........i think I'll just walk to the middle of the track".

        • Who walks out of their mangled car onto an active racetrack??? Giving the poor lighting conditions and his black suit, it's entirely possible that Stewart didn't see him until it was too late, and it looks like he gunned it at the last second trying to avoid the guy, IMO. Very unfortunate incident.

          • I see two things wrong with this: Tony sped up when he saw Ward on the track, and Ward was on the damn track.

            • Tony Stewart is a douchebag, and I don't doubt that he tried to hit him (while in the car) on purpose because he's done it before. But the guy walked out into the middle of the track, that's just stupid.

              • It's unfortunate, but I have little sympathy for someone who gets out of their car on a racetrack [unless it's on fire]

              • Well, this is sad but he should have never got out of his car. Why would he think that someone would stop for him in the middle of a race?
