Conspiracy Theory

Think it's time for some left field thinking. Anyone else think that the premise of the game could be a lie constructed by the speaker... The game starts with the ghost reanimating you from bones, so in fact you were a dead human, now infused with 'light' from the traveller. We're told that the traveller terraformed all of the planets in our system and tripled lifespans - a 'golden age' , and then the darkness came and along - with that the hive and the fallen. Well how about an alternative theory, along the same lines as the film 'Oblivion'.
Maybe when the ghost reanimated us he changed our perception so we see humans as aliens and fellow aliens (us) as human; essentially flipped our perspective. The traveller did in fact terraform all of the planets in our system but only so our system could be conquered, and it was. We are now fighting on behalf of the traveller to kill the remaining humans. And the darkness is just a way the traveller keeps a reign on us to ensure we don't see too much. We are the bad guys, and the humans (who look like aliens to us) are the good guys. Feel free to discuss, for fun of course ;-)
To defeat the darkness I believe we will need to collect 5 elemental stones from a blue opera singer on a space boat and take them to an ancient pyramid where we can assist a supreme being. Just a theory though. Oh wait...
Big badda boom
• Some people say you went to deep, but you didn't go deep enough? Someone will betray us, but who? The traveler? The speaker? The cryptarch? No, these people/giant ball get there power/ importance from us, so betraying us would be counterproductive for them. However there is one sentient being who has the most to gain from the destruction of guardians. One who tries to distract us from our goals.... One who is beaten and tossed around constantly by guardians.... One who is sick of getting kicked off the edge of the tower....
The Purple Ball

      • Well then the darkness is doing a pretty shitty job, since the 'humans' outnumber us by so much.

        • I can't say that I agree. Look at the info we have been provided: The Hive are the agents of The Darkness, The Fallen came to our system after The Collapse, The Cabal are a army that showed up at The Twilight Gap and finally The Vex are TIME travelers. Also look at where each race is located. The Hive are dug in on the moon which is a good staging area to fight the earth from and is where we forced them back to. Fallen are on every planet because they are scavengers, but we are told they once were a great and noble people so what happened? The Cabal are dug in on Mars for reasons unknown and are at war with not only us but The Vex also. The Vex are concentrated on Venus but why? They are time travelers so why there and why the war with The Cabal? If The Traveler was evil and wanted us to do its bidding why would it create 4 other evil races to get us on its side? Wouldn't one be enough to make you say "Hell yeah ill fight to take back my galaxy!"? The Traveler is an entity for good and The Darkness wants to stop it. I think all but The Hive aren't inherently evil but are here for different reasons one way or the other.

        • That's a solid idea. I was thinking it could be similar to the mass effect series, but I swear to god if the ending isn't better I'm going to punch a baby

          • My thought has been that the traveller goes around the universe creating armies. Only species strong enough to withstand his will make the cut and then he moves on, with his armies following behind. Possibly we were to strong and he had to use his army to push us back to the brink. He then couldn't resist the power that we have and is using the ghosts to bring us back and one day he flicks the switch once he's satisfied with the size of his new army.

          • In the darkness we will be the fallen. In the darkness we will desire the light that is not shared and can not be commanded. We must not let the darkness take us. Light banishes darkness, and now the darkness seeks to overcome the light by removing those who appreciate it. The Traveler, in his struggle to survive the darkness, gave light to the Ghosts, who in turn search for centuries to give that light to those who did not surrender to the darkness but lived out the length of their lives. In their travels to defeat the darkness the risen Guardians occasionally find dead Ghosts and give to them of their own light, enabling those Ghosts to continue their centuries long search for more Guardians. The light does not die. The Traveler belongs to the light...as do the Guardians and Ghosts.

I think this theory goes a bit too far. I don't think there's been any direct deception on the part of the traveller, at least not yet. I do however think that there are only really two possible reasons for the other alien species to be chasing the traveller and combatting the humans. 1) the traveller is somehow offensive to them, so they want to destroy it and revert humanities advances. And this 'darkness' is just a term to refer to what reigns once the traveller is gone. 2) they want the traveller for themselves, to communicate and learn from it as the humans did. In this sense, these alien species might have followed the traveller through space and time (in the case of the vex) and want to kill the humans (and each other) and claim the traveller for themselves. Either because they learned about the traveller and searched it out. Or because the traveller already influenced them, and enabled their own Golden Ages, advancing them to be able to see it's powers and want more, however it left them, travelling as it does. And when it left, it altered them again, making them lose sense and lead to infighting and regression, or simply making them want to chase the traveller, to avoid the 'darkness' that's left in it's wake. I think either of these are possible. And that the traveller may well have left the humans too, but it never had the chance because the other species caught up and forced the collapse, maybe inadvertently. It's definitely interesting to think about and exciting to wait and find out in-game what the truth is. EDIT: As an after-thought, with the collapse, if the traveller didn't carry on travelling and stayed with the humans by intention, then there may be some overarching reason, other than that the traveller is racist or picky haha. But the traveller is definitely sentient in some way, whether it is a sentient being in itself, or if it's just a giant ship/space station, like a death-star except not a warship, and it's piloted by sentient beings.

            • Theories like this and "Speaker will betray us" or "Traveler is evil" really annoy me. Bungie themselves has said Destiny has a positive and hopeful tone. There isn't going to be some dark twist. There doesn't need to be.

                • I hope it is something similar: The Traveler if evil or semi-evil. All the aliens Fallen/cabal/vex/etc. have a very weak alliance for peace throughout the universe, and the Traveler was a joint operation by all the alien races. the crew was a mix of them all, but they rebelled and tried to overthrow the leaderships of everyone and are on the run from the "Darkness" (really the joint forces of the aliens trying to kill it). The fact that it rebelled caused the aliens to become distrustful of eachother and are at war again, but join together to take down their common enemy. The Traveler made up the games plot as a cover to gain humanity's help and the aliens think the humans are the army for the Traveler and are trying to kill us because we are the enemies. They would be right in thinking we are the minions of it, as we are and have been fooled by its lies. Near the end of the game, the Traveler awakens and mankind realizes its folly and joines the Fallen/etc in destroying it forever. Or at least something along those lines. :)
