my letter to the destiny team for all to read Love it or Hate

Destiny Team, I have written in once during the alpha and would like to again share my thoughts on Destiny. This time I got to play with many of my friends on both consoles and it provided a different experience for me. I feel as though Destiny has amazing potential, but it is still not the game you promised when first announced. To some extent that is ok, as there is always road blocks, and lets face it a First Person Shooter Mass Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (FPSMMORPG) isn’t just a mouth full it would be a huge task even if all the great game companies worked together to create it, but here are some things I feel are important and lacking. The RPG element is there in a subtle way, but I was really hoping for something more. I feel like complaining is not constructive so I have a couple suggestions, and knowing full well that in the end it all comes down to dollar signs I tried to keep things simple. First the classes should have more definition between them and it would not take much for each class, for example looking at the titan that has the general build to be a solid tank class. Starting him out with a class passive of drawing more agro so right out the gate he fits all the great makings of a tank, and moving the amount of usable abilities from 3 (not counting the jump) to five would add more depth to the class which could make all the difference. One ability could be as simple as emitting a blinding flash that just pulls all attention on to him, and a second could be an extra layer of armor that lasts a short period of time, again these are just general ideas I am throwing out that I discussed with my friends and worked out together. Next let us look at the warlock. Give him a class passive to shoot his allies to give them health and now he is a perfect fit for the role of healer change his personal heals to group heals within a given range and a grenade that heals allies along with two other abilities that could include a ranged resurrection and a d.o.t. (damage over time) he could place on an enemy for an attack or on an ally for life. Lastly my favorite class the Hunter a class passive of extra crit. or melee damage would be enough to place him in the field of a dps class along with two extra abilities that could be something like a trap he can lay and a personal buff, maybe even one that affect the whole team. Again these are just some thoughts my friends and I have to make each class feel different from one another. As it is at the moment, none of the class feel special or important, and this can be a major problem when it comes to thinking about the longevity of the game. Before I touch on any of what I would consider to be more minor and easier to change things I would like to take some time to mention some of the things that I think are great about the game. First threat awareness or better known as an agro system, I think this was key as it is for any team based game well done, and it really gives a sense of meaning to the way a team enters into a situation. Next the placement of guns in each category i.e. primary, secondary, heavy, as it stands right now all the guns, as few in number as there have been, all really feel like they fit as well as being well balanced in each of their respective categories. Again I say well done, it is really hard to find an fps of any caliber with a well-balanced arsenal. I also have to give your artist credit, and I am not talking graphically, just the way each area has been pieced together really brings up the experience to another level. It brings a sense of realism to the world we are playing in, and that amazing if I can’t get lost in the world there is no reason for me to play the game. The last thing that really stands out that I really like, although I also hate this, that there is so much mystery to the story, or as much as I have played through all the story missions. I feel like I still don’t know anything that’s going on, not even about my own character like I haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of this potentially huge universe you have created to act as our playground in many ways its breath taking. Now I just want to discuss some of the minor issues that I have seen and heard from my friends in discussions. The lack of depth and attachment to the npc’s (non playable characters) around us at this point I don’t feel as though I have a reason to care about them not even my ghost that brings you back from the dead. This leads me to the second issue I have being brought back from the dead really at this point with how little we know about what’s going on it doesn’t make any sense to me what so ever but that’s mostly a personal thing. Than there is the seemingly pointless nature of the ships you can buy I understand that that’s how guardians travel around but unless I get to personally pilot it around and maybe get to participate in a dog fight now and than I don’t see the point. Another thing that could be resolved later in the game that just hasn’t been revealed yet but why do all the ghosts sound the same this is just another aspect that doesn’t make sense at this point in the game. Also the inclusion of different race’s that don’t matter out side of appearance there is nothing different about them which to me seems like a waste of time you could have just had one race with more customizations if race wasn’t going to matter again this is just personal preference. I would hate to leave this on a bad note so here some other notable things I have enjoyed so far. The verity of things there are to do i.e. missions, strikes, explore mod, and the knowledge that there is one game mod yet to be reveled. PvP is very well balanced even though I am not always the biggest fan of PvP this game may be the exception for me. I also really enjoy the fact that there is an in game storage as well as building “loyalty” with different vendors for shops by doing different things it gives the game a little more depth that I feel every game really needs some where. When all is said in done I think you guys really did make a decent game here and I am sure there is lots more you would like to do with it that you either haven’t reveled or can’t do due to budgeting constraints and I would love to be surprised with some big changes on the launch date. I can’t thank you guys enough for letting me experience both the alpha and the beta for Destiny, a game with more potential than I have seen out of any game that’s been released in the last five years and despite there being some pretty major things I would like to see done differently I am still very excited for launch and hope you guys are as well. Thanks again, Ginthereaper

the reasons why your suggestions wouldn't work is because it would break the crucible mode. Whatever is done in the game, whatever is customizable and added...its all always done with the crucible in mind. Take this for example.....for a game that's said to have so much customization. ....we can't even change our height and weight... The simple justification for this, again is the crucible. Changing those features changes the hit box. That in itself causes an unbalance. So the farthest we can go is to choose a slender female over the male. The rpg elements in the game are on a small scale...as well as the mmo elements...which is why people debate furiously over Destiny not being an mmo. ..the elements are Deffinitely there...but it's obvious it's to a lesser degree. A far lesser degree. Cause quite frankly if all it was, was an mmo. ....It would be one of the shittiest mmo games to date. Cause it's missing all that stuff to make it a stronger mmo rpg. That doesn't make Destiny bad at all. Its hitting the mark in so many other important areas to its merit. Just not those within the range of expectations from a player deeply involved in mmo rpg games. It hits some of them, misses a lot more though. So instead, a smart move on their part, it's something much more than an mmo or a fps. It's missing the other stuff, but instead has something very different to offer. Which causes the intrigue to this title and why many were anxious to play it. Forget the nuts and bolts of that argument and take it for what it is. If the fps end wasn't regulated on so much Destiny would be an entirely different game. Some would love it, some wouldn't love it as much and some wouldn't play it. Its the equivalent of an alternate version of Destiny That doesn't have a competitive multiplayer, to a version that does. So luckily for most bungie fans, bungies never given up the competitive outlet. Otherwise we would all be guardians with swords instead of guns fighting that giant frog that was in the concept art during early early development. Some people would have preferred that game over what we got, others that knew of bungie are happier they decided to stay with the sci fi fps genre and expand its depth. I know you bring up other stuff, but for the most part...I feel as if the the game is what it is because predominantly it's a fps with a blend of elements from other genres. I actually like it a lot. There's a few tweaks I'd love to have in the game..that I felt would make it a better experience...so I threw that in the sea of feedback. Other players read it and agreed with nearly all of it, but a bungie rep never bothered writing a reply.

Wow, that was a lot and I don't have the gas to respond to it all but your well written comments about class diversity is the one I'll take. If you've noticed the second sub classes for the guardians then you'll see that the Titan (my build so I'm familiar) has the dome of light (someone correct name if not accurate) that protects all under the dome and recharges their shield for a period of time after, akin to the healer class. Most of the other guardians have different but similar traits to their next sub class. I'd presume this is to ensure longevity and protection during a 3-5 hour raid. Your points are well written and clearly thought out but perhaps A) Let the game launch and B) Do a little background work prior to saying the developers missed the mark.

      • well in first place its a shooter. the rpg and mmo touch is only for a more interesting sidekick. if the characters would have even more skills it would end up as a moba game, especially the warlock being a healer. (we dont know much about the sunsinger skill, but thats already a buff and it also resurrects yourself and your friends). and the dot effect is the warlocks grenade, by far the best atm (hunter has a more or less similiar grenade with less dmg). the titan has already a variety of tanking buffs, one is a sprinting shield. (which is shown in the latest trailer, the blue "anime-ish" effect. (at least im 99% sure its the sprint shield)) also dont give the hunter more crit, hes already bad-ass with his fabulous cape and the golden gun, much bling. aggro system... well yeah, thats n mmorpg thing (or army of two). basically, if you run first into the enemys and shoot them first, they automatically attack you. so make sure your titan is always in plain sight, but watch your health while doing that. for the lacking story in the beta - thats normal. (i know everyone uses this excuse) its a beta, but bungie wants to keep the story away from you until you actually have the full game so you wont get spoiled to much. same goes to most of the characters. (saladin, hunter / warlock / titan main npc) all the others are just npcs for buying stuff, check your mail, encrypt... they never or rarely have an interesting story. (i never got a story from a trade npc in an mmorpg). but the ghost was actually kinda interesting, he talked to me a lot :3 i would love to see spacefight, but seeing as the fanboys criticized the halo reach space missions (which were -blam!-ing awesome) this is highly doubtfull. also i love how they let you change your ship, adds a nicer touch to the "you are unique, you are legend" feeling. same goes to race, its cosmetic (like in every other mmorpg wich has multiple races. just sometimes they are in war / alli). human are the normal legends, exos are the badass legends and awoken (female :3) are the sexy legends. they could have included tigerman, i dont mind having more options to customize my character to look unique from everyone else. the more options the better, dont scratch it just because "it doesnt make a difference". destiny feels more or less unique, and thats how games should be. not just copy and paste already done stuff. (i know shooter, rpgs and mmos have already been done 100x times, but destiny feels different. i wonder why you never mentioned vehicles...)

          • Upon the reveal of Destiny a rush of excitement for the future of FPS ran over me. E3 had brought many welcomed surprises, however the notion of an open world First Person MMORPG was something that I had desired to experience since I played the first Borderlands and Bungie answered that call. Fast forward to DESTINY BETA, I had already watched streams, read interviews, and talked to friends who had the chance to play ALPHA, and I am left wanting. Destiny has tons of potential, and has many great mechanics, but in the end it falls short. There is a very obvious lack of class depth, however it is not without some team synergy. The obvious lack of skills and support abilities takes away a lot of the potential that destiny has to offer. I always turn to Shadowrun, a fps released on Xbox and pc. Shadow run had a multitude of mechanics that had been perfectly balanced for competitive play that added depth to the FPS genre. One could teleport through walls, gust grenades, heal their teammates with the Tree of Life, and that is just the beginning of what magical spells shadowrun had to offer. Then it had technology such as Smart link that improved accuracy and when used with the chain guns would make a devastating combination. One could also see through walls, hang glide, improve mobility etc. Finally each race was very unique and balanced (arguably excluding the dwarf). Elves had low health but a ton of Escence (magic points) to work with giving them an edge in spell casting. They are fast but weak in strength so when wielding larger weapons they would suffer a penalty in mobility. I bring this up because a game that was released in 2007 had more creativity and depth on a lower budget than Destiny does at the moment. Let me state that I DO NOT WANT DESTINY TO FAIL. Instead, I would like Destiny to thrive and bring new and exciting experiences. Player options, unique races, team strategies with depth., stats that matter and give the player more creativity when building his/her digital self. Bungie has the resources to make Destiny something great and I hope that they succeed, however at this moment I have been left wanting. Happy Gaming, Jacob Paul Schmidt. Just wanted to add my personal thoughts

          • This is so stupid. I read your whole lot of rambles, and it's nothing but bullshit. The way the character system is set up now with their powers is perfectly fine. Why do you want more? And agro? Like wtf dude this isn't army of two. The Titan, warlock, and hunters abilities don't need any more.

            • That was hard to read. I don't mean content-wise, you just have some points where it's clear that its two sentences crammed together I don't know what people do this on the internet it makes things confusing. I kind of disagree on the class changes. I like them as they are. There's enough that's different about how they handle that they feel distinct, but they don't overload the control scheme, which might happen if each class had a few additional skills. I also definitely don't think that adding new skills would be an easy process from a dev perspective, but I can only really speculate.

You wrote all that and put only 4 hours into the beta? You did strike once... And you didn't touch the Pvp side of it? Hate it and all the agro nonesense you're spewing.
