New Social Features: A Community Effort

We're very used to matchmaking features in games to bring people together. However, we're not often trying to think outside the box to come up with new ideas to serve that same function. People are complaining about the lack of matchmaking, but in reality they are complaining about the lack of social features that work toward bringing people together. We need social features to help drive proper communication and camaraderie. What's most important is not reducing the randomness of the people we meet, but creating a temptation for us to want to communicate with strangers. Meeting new people shouldn't be taboo! Meeting new people is inevitable, and so we should be working to let these people be social together and foster community rather than finding ways of fooling ourselves into thinking reaching out to Reddit or Clans will mean we meet people who we completely know and trust. Instead we should try to foster social communications with the strangers we meet within the game. So let's hear all of your ideas. What new feature can we create to bring people together? Maybe you'd just improve upon an existing feature? We have clans, we have groups, and yet much of that is still very external (i.e. They're not in the game). *** The key here is that the feature MUST be within the game. Anything that takes us out of the game out of necessity (rather than being something optional like the Companion App) is a major inconvenience for players. *** Edit: The following have already been suggested (but you can feel free to improve upon them if you wish). 2nd Edit: I've expanded the suggestions list, going into more detail and providing credit to those who suggested it (click their name for a direct link to their reply). For a TL;DR just read the dashed portions of each suggestion. Suggested by The Gamer, Khorick, Tanmeister69, Folchinator, NEWNS, RaunchyRam, NineBreaker, and AaOo: - Text chat, voice chat, proximity chat, Companion app chat ... chat is the most suggested feature so far. *expanded by DawnBlue: 1. Assign buttons or have options to provide the ability to swap between Fireteam and Proximity Chat. Pressing the assigned button will switch Fireteam chat with Proximity chat (i.e. It will swap what your primary chat option is and dictate who you can listen and talk to). Holding the assigned button will let you listen to your secondary chat option without swapping. 2. Have an option to be able to disable Proximity chat. *expanded by RadBrad31: 1. Have voice chat enabled by default for Strikes. Suggested by What Up C: - Preset phrases or tools assigned to the D-Pad where we can either communicate with "Hello's" or join a Fireteam with specific intent like "Wants to join your Fireteam for Strike 'X'" Suggested by DanielKBoom, DawnBlue, CaptainMericah, and EmceeSchw3pp3: - Bulletin Board in the Tower or Game Menu where you can look for a group or queue up yourself for any specific category of activity within the game. *expanded by DanielKBoom and DawnBlue: 1. You could gear-check/inspect players right within the bulletin board or menu 2. You could queue up with specified intent (e.g. I want to be the sniper, and I want to do achievements at the same time). This includes all necessary traits such as difficulty and mission. 3. There were polls or quiz systems in response to queues (e.g. "Would you be comfortable talking with us on mics?" or "Would you be comfortable playing the sniper & doing achievements?") *expanded by AJAX1234: 1. Make it a mercenary board where you can pay players to raid with you. - A preset checklist/filter you could mark to help the game phase you with players of the same personality at the Tower (e.g. "I prefer meeting people who are playing Crucible matches right now" or "I can't use a mic at this time") - An -optional- rating system where you can rate fellow Guardians on Friendliness, Cooperation, and other positive factors (with the impact of the rating varying depending on play circumstances. e.g. someone who invites you for 5 minutes and then rates you low will have less meaning then if someone does a whole raid with you and felt your cooperation was 'meh'). - A feature where you can string together preset text or phrases like in Dark Souls. Preferably these messages would go to a player directly, or would be placed on a message board in the Tower as a type of 'queue-up' feature. Suggested by Final Rune, and OroBouros: - We invent our own social forms and gather around specific hubs in the Tower in order to signal that we want to be invited for something. Either this will be natural as in hanging around an NPC who gives rewards for a specific Raid, or artificially created as in hanging around well-known sites around the Tower. - Phase players so that when you enter a specific wing in the Tower you will only meet people who are on the same missions and strikes as you. This wing, or lounge, would allow players to gear-check and communicate before creating a team. Suggested by ShadowKnightMDH: - Be able to search for Fireteams and Raid teams in orbit, while also allowing you to talk to them. Suggested by Titus Stryker, and Random Hammond: - Larger party cap Suggested by Kaidra, Richard, and The Gamer: - Matchmaking (despite the intent of the thread, matchmaking has still been concluded by some as the one solution they'd like to see).

I think matchmaking in all strikes and raids would help but make it optional, and force voice chat on, but make it known that this will happen when you enter into this optional function

    • In light of having played the game to some lengths after release, I'll be bumping this thread for any who are still interested in contributing. If you believe the lack of social features an issue in Destiny, feel free to pitch in and I'll add your thoughts to the growing list!

    • I believe voice chat should be on by default in Strikes. If you'd like this option disabled, you could turn it off. You could also mute individuals if you so chose. I think meeting people in Strikes would lead to more friendships/groups being made, making the desire for MM in raids less. Thank you for creating this topic!

Matchmaking is all I got right now. Though I haven't seen any "valid arguments" against the inclusion of matchmaking. There's a reason why it's implemented into virtually all online multiplayers: because it works. Why would it not work in Destiny? Would it somehow dilute the experience? If so, why?

        • This thread goes against bungies(Luke Smiths) intent The idea is only play with people you know and that's why MM is removed so people cant just find randomers to raid with most if not all of the suggestions above are simply inferior forms of MM there only strength is that you see people before you jump in so for example "ok we have 3 warlocks and 2 hunters we should probably find a titan to join us" but so im not just being negative and crying out for just raid MM they could add something similar to SWTOR where you have a location with nothing there except "portals" to all the raids so the only people there would be those looking to raid thus making it easier to get people together and you get a glance at their gear and do a mic check PS: only Matchmaking helps ensure good connection between all players

          • I agree with all of these suggestions. Especially the Voice chat one. That is the main problem in this game for me. I bet ppl wouldn't be so against no mm for Raids if there was voice chat. I know I wouldn't. Also you are 100% correct on that external connectivity statement. For other ppl I think the forums and clans are fine. But for me they aren't. I don't have any problems with ppl on the forums, but I'm just not interested in joining a clan. And I don't game with ppl unless we've talked and played together in game. That's just how I am. So I hope there will be an internal way to me new players. Again voice chat is my favorite suggestion. So far it has worked for me in every online console game. Gears, Halo, Bf etc. Worked every time.

          • Here's my iterations of proximity chat and group finding feature similar to that bulletin board thingy
In the game's Settings you have an option to completely disable Proximity Chat to avoid accidentally turning it on. There would be a feature that allows you to mute players, of course. Only players with proximity chat on @ settings would be listed. If a player has proximity chat enabled in the Settings, they can use it through 2 functions assigned to a single button. - Hold the button to switch between listening to Fireteam chat and proximity chat. This is the function that enables Proximity Chat. - Press the button to switch between talking in Fireteam chat only and proximity chat. This way you can hear everything in the proximity chat but only talk to your Fireteam if you choose to. I think having these two functions would be simple enough and allow the amount of flexibility needed so the proximity chat works well

I think it would be nice if the game featured some sort of feature for finding groups for raids, strikes and nightfall missions. Maybe something like this - a Looking For Group board at the Tower: - Choose the mission and difficulty you want to engage (only those you meet the minimum requirements for are listed) - Leave a short message, so you can for example let others know your time limitations, e.g. "Can only do the raid for 3 hours" - Or instead of the message above, select tags to let others know of your available time, skill and whatnot (suggested by Bravely Default due to the possibility of abusing the short messages with profanity etc.) - After accepting, anyone can now see your listing and invite/message you from the board. You can also at any time redact your listing from it or join another group through the board, which automatically removes your listing.
• First of all GAME CHAT! Bungie had game chat in all of the halo games so why stop now?!Communication is extremely important in destiny, even more important than it is in Halo, and its something the game lacks so much of. Also, i think it would be cool if they added a unique chat system in free roam where you can hear other players more the closer you are to them, and less, the further you are away from them. Just like the chat system in dayz.

              • As an addendum on the in-game LFG type system, I also propose the game have an in-game friends list. The reason for this is my PSN friends list is exclusively for actual friends and family. I will never add a random that I've played with in one game. An in-game friends list fixes this issue. That way I can keep track of the people I've enjoyed playing Destiny with, in Destiny.

I would like to see larger and longer public events. Maybe events that require x amount of guardians to complete.or planet wide assaults by the darkness causing alot guardians to work together. Edit During these events there should be full com's between gatdians. Then allowing them to branch off into groups afterwards.

Your short one for a raid, you post for one. You want to farm Devils Lair? Post it. It must be server wide. Chat in the game is needed. Chat won't work for LFG. Not enough players around you. You may get lucky. We need to communicate.

                      • These are just examples of locations, not necessarily the best idea If you want a Fireteam for Explore then sit in the "big well bowl thing" over by the Speaker. If you want a Fireteam for Story then sit in the Lounge down the stairs from the Dead Orbit leader. If you want a Fireteam for Strikes then sit down by the Vanguard Quarter Master If you want a Fireteam for the Crucible then sit by the Crucible Quarter Master If you want a Fireteam for a Raid, then sit in front of the Iron Banner doors. Different ways of doing this will be in different social areas. Then you see who is available and start checking their bungie.net/psn/xbl profiles or send random invites. IMO This is the kind of work around we ought to do. Ultimately I think things like this will happen once critical mass at max level is achieved and the game is out for a few weeks.

                      • My back up idea is a bulletin board in the tower. It could be like a mini-forum at the post office. Steps: Post office -> bulletin board -> category, e.g. Raids -> select "Create Fireteam" or request to join a player who has already done it. If another player requests to join you, you can accept, or decline via a notification like the ones we already see for invites. Canceling your post, or leaving your team could be the same as normally leaving a fireteam. You could also have categories for strikes, crucible, clans, and other social functions.

Pair up two fire teams. If you have a 3 man team, have the option to join another group. It's the halfway point between traditional matchmaking, and the current option. I explained it in this post http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post?id=67170274 This one does a better job http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post?id=67168788

                          • This thread needs to be more popular. Also, Destiny needs more communication. People should be able to speak to others on their team in PvP and strikes. There should be some way to chat with people in the Tower (possibly some sort of text chat). You can't have a friendly social environment is there is no social environment because people can't communicate. It should be opt-in, so people don't have to go out of their way to avoid intrusive communication, but you can't have perfectly friendly and effective communication.
