Cross generation play isn't possible. You can however move characters between generations. What is possible however is playing between product lines since xbox and playstation both have similar architecture. Problem is, who currently owns these platforms? We need a new competitor that supports cross plat. If that happens, whoever gets left out has no choice but to bend. Edit: I wasn't sure at first so I looked into it further, cross platform play is VERY possible. In Final Fantasy 14 A Realm Reborn you are able to play with players across PS3, PS4, and PC regardless of which version they own. Also the reason FFXIVARR isn't on Xbox is because Microsoft doesn't support cross plat and Square Enix didn't want to segregate their community so they opted to not sell more copies on Xbox in order to support cross plat. I haven't bought a PS4 or Xbox One. I think I'll start now buy simply saying, I'm not going to buy one till cross platform play is fully supported and consumers are not to be discriminated against any further.
