Orbit is the Real Hub (and it shouldn't be)

I would prefer to log-in at The Tower

I would prefer to log-in in Orbit

So as the topic states, after playing through Beta with 3 maxed characters and plenty of item transfers in between, one of my largest complaints stems from a relatively small issue. Why do we have to start from Orbit upon each log-in/character switch? Chances are, if you're logging on for the first time in the day, you want to stop off at the Tower to pick up some bounties, peruse the shops' rotating inventories, etc before just jumping into a mission. (Even Crucible has Bounties to pick up for a more productive use of time) So why not just have characters load into the Tower as a default? Going from Tower -> Orbit takes about 5 seconds, whereas going from Orbit -> Tower takes about 1-1.5 minutes. Each. Time. This means if you want to transfer an item between your Guardians, you have to first: 1. Log on to Guardian with item you'd like to transfer. 2. Select Tower from Orbit and launch. 3. Deposit item in storage. 4. Log on to Guardian to receive item 5. Select Tower from Orbit and launch. 6. Remove item from storage. 7. Finally go on mission/explore/Crucible with newly transferred item. Oh did you forget to deposit an item you wanted to transfer? Repeat steps 1-7. Compare this to if Guardians logged in right at the Tower (which is supposedly our Home right?). 1. Log in AND deposit items in same step. 2. Log in to 2nd Guardian AND remove items in same step. 3. Be on your merry way. Would anyone actually be upset if they had to start from Tower and take the extra 5 seconds to go back to Orbit rather than the other way around?

  • I was feeling the same way. Seems like that would be far more efficient. The Tower is always my first stop. And the lore does state the Tower is the home of the Guardians. I suppose maybe somewhere in the story you could temporarily lose access to the Tower (big maybe given its importance to gameplay, but that's a common story theme in games like this). In that case though, it'd feel much more like you lost your home if you started in orbit instead of the place you usually start.

    • While you didn't get me with many other points, your point about activating bounties was a great one. I consistanly forgot to activate bounties when I would log in, and usually got a few minutes into exploration, or a few Crucible matches in before I realized I had forgot the bounties. I really didn't care before reading your post, but I do now agree the tower would be best to start from. On a side note, i've heard rumors of personal quarters, and i'd love to see some form of clan hall in the tower. If either one of these 2 is a reality, i'd imagine we will be starting from the tower come september.

    • I agree, only because the tower is the first place I go every time I log in, or switch characters. And thematically, it is your home, it's where you should be while you're resting/logged off. It's the game's hub. That's where you should start. Because like the OP said, the first thing you do is fly to the tower, find bounties, look at vendors... Before you go on missions.

    • I Like Orbit, i can see why the Tower makes sense right now, but keep in mind if you log out of say Venus then how the hell did you get back to the Tower.... seems to make more sense that your body be uploaded to your orbiting craft

    • I agree partly. I think you should log in to orbit. Then you can go straight to a mission or the Crucible without having to wait for the Tower to load. If you are already at the tower you should be able to switch characters without having to go to orbit. Change character and ship teleport old one away and new character teleports in. Without having to re-load the tower.

    • I would prefer orbit, but I would prefer more things to do in orbit.

Cause it needs to load your character. Thats what the Orbit is, its basically a Menu system. Flying to your destination is your loading screen. (All really cool in my opinion) The Tower serves many purposes but I think being able to switch between Guardians at will is asking a little to much. How would it even work!? You hit Start, switch. And when you come out of your Start Screen your just, poof, changed? What about if another Guardian is watching while he's/she's "changing", what are the (seeing) watching happen? Can the game even support such functionality? Idk, but I think this post is quite trivial, considering it takes (at least) less than two minutes to do. (Put your weapons in the Vault) Leave the Tower (or wherever you are), switch Guardians, and go back. (Retrieve weapons)
