Honestly Dissapointed

First off, i'm ready for the fanboys to say that this game is a godsend, or start randomly pretending to be characters like this entire forum seems to be. However, hopefully there's at least one reasonable person in here. I'm going to go over what's wrong with this game, and why as a huge MMO player, I know that this game will fail, as in it wont last long. Content So, after playing all the Earth missions, running around finding everything in explore mode, and doing the Strike multiple times. Then going over and doing it all again when my friend got in the game, it's just become obvious that this game lacks content story-wise. There's a few missions and a strike that wont take long to master, and it's ONE destination per planet. It took all of one day, maybe even a few hours to find and do everything on Earth, and after playing the moon mission I can say that it will be the exact same thing. "Well there's locations we can't get to in the beta!" No, people have glitched into them and they're tiny, this is ridiculous, the game is extremely small. Missions Now, this is a hard one because generally MMO's have bad missions that are repetitive but I thought Destiny might be the exception with Bungie creating a great story in the Halo games. However, the plot is vague, the story makes no sense so far, and the missions take all of ten minutes. Along with this is the fact that they're strung together to make them seem longer. You could easily string all of the missions on Earth together and make one normal sized campaign mission from another game. Instead we're brought back to the beginning of the zone, and have to go through building's we went through in the last mission to get to where the new mission starts making it seem longer than it is. The missions are repetitive and boring after playing them more than once. "Shoot enemies, go to place, put ghost in computer, fight wave of enemies, wait 30 seconds for mission to end." It's linear, it's repetitive, it's BAD. Hopefully the full game missions will be better, but with 1/4 of the game's missions being dull I can't see it being great. Loot There are a shockingly tiny amount of drops for you to collect, somebody linked the different pieces of armour earlier and with around 4-20 exotics in only a FEW slots. (Some armour slots don't even have exotic pieces) it's terrible. Everybody is going to look the same, everyone will have the exact same armour, it's not going to be unique at all. This is shown when you pick up loot and it's the same piece of armour you've picked up 50 times before, and the new "better" armour looks basically the same as the last one you had. Drops make no sense, and legendaries seem to be handed out like they're nothing. You can buy legendaries, you get them in the iron banner all the time, it's too easy to get these things. PVP PVP feels tacked on, it doesn't feel like it fits into the game at all, and is unbalanced to the extreme. Hunter's supers easily kill three people one shot, warlocks also get a ranged/cqc super, while titans are stuck with a super that slams enemies in front of him, possibly getting a few kills. However, the warlock super can basically do the same thing just by aiming it at the ground, and it can also be ranged, so what is the point is playing titan at all?!?!? The map rotation is really shoddy and i've had the moon map five times in a row more times than I can count instead of being taken to another location. I counted while playing the Iron banner what maps in got without leaving a lobby 4 times moon 3 times venus 2 times earth 1 time mars Why? Why does it not rotate constantly like a normal game? Nobody wants to play the same map over and over, especially when the moon is utter trash, the Earth being a camp fest, venus being good, and mars being mediocre. This needs to be fixed. This game needs fixing, it's overhyped. It has potential to be good, but with the release soon there's no way they can fix half of this. Hopefully the second one will be better. Have fun arguing and supporting this game like sheep in the comments. Inb4itsabeta

  • What did you expect, mass effect. A beta is something developers use to find what works and what doesn't so they can add and take stuff out. Drop and levelling rates were high so we could test out higher level items. The reason why it's so barebones is because it is a work in progress and they left out a lot cause it is not complete

  • Content - The beta is the starter zones, were you expecting their best stuff to be released? Missions - Starter zones aren't exactly known for the best content. Go play WoW and just play the starter areas (should be ~lvl8-10) and tell me just how much story you get out of that. Plus it was a stress-test beta so it isn't like they needed to include much more than the barebones of the storyline. Which is this sphere gave us knowledge, the darkness pursued it, and now we're on the verge of being wiped out. Loot - Data-mined info doesn't mean that it is everything (though it can be). Also there's the ability for them to add in new loot. Another question would be randomly generated loot much like what we saw in the beta. The stuff where it would have the same name but different upgrade options. PvP - I agree that this area felt the worst off. I disagree on your view of the supers and maps, but it still didn't feel as balanced as I would have expected from bungie. Inb4itsabeta - Uhh, what do you expect? It IS a beta, and one that was specifically for server stress testing while only giving us a small taste. While there's nothing wrong with being apprehensive, especially in regards to the PvP (which is the least likely area to change from beta info to live without actual revamps), people seem to forget just what a beta means. It is for testing whatever the developer wants people to test (servers in this case). People also seem to forget that as an MMO-style game they can add in stuff either once the game launches or afterwards. Now don't think I'm saying that the game can do no wrong, simply that I realize it is a beta. I mean we don't even know what version of the beta this is compared to what version of the beta their internal testers are using. The potential is there, yes they can still screw up and tank the game, but with it being a beta as opposed to the full game, it looked plenty fine to give them a shot. Especially since we only saw starter content and none of what would be considered end-game.

  • I think all of your points are valid. However I took pleasure from most of what you did not. Not every game is a good fit for all players. Maybe Destiny is just not for you. I payed $5 deposit on s preorder just so I could try it on for size. I enjoyed myself. You are inteligent and well spoken so I hope to run in to you in another game in the future. Cheers VtxR
I'm going to go over what's wrong with this game, and why as a huge MMO player
Woah, stop right there. Your MMO experience has nothing to do with Destiny. Destiny is FAR from an MMO, it is a shared-world shooter. MMO implies quite a few things that Destiny is certainly not.
I know that this game will fail, as in it wont last long
You know. Right. Gotcha. You know the game will fail because you didn't enjoy yourself while hundreds of thousands of others very obviously did.
There are a shockingly tiny amount of drops for you to collect, somebody linked the different pieces of armour earlier and with around 4-20 exotics in only a FEW slots.
Again with the false information. To begin, in the Beta the level cap was 8. Tell me, how many different 'your level' items are there for your hero to equip at the end of early game in these MMOs you're playing? As for the exotic list, Bungie has shared a list of a few, and the others that have been released are the ones that were seen at ONE VENDOR. The list is far from complete.
Shoot enemies, go to place, put ghost in computer, fight wave of enemies, wait 30 seconds for mission to end.
You sound so unbelievably ignorant. I'm sorry. This is pathetic. You just said you're an MMO player, explain to me how "Kill x of y enemy that has an identical AI and attack pattern to every other enemy within 100 yards" is even remotely superior to this. Destiny has not only a wide variety of enemies but the enemies aren't "dumb" as they are in an MMO. This game takes place in a much higher throughput. The AI does a lot of things, and if you think surviving wave after wave of enemies is no fun, I would direct your immensely unpopular opinion towards "Firefight", as well as "Zombies" But of course you "know" the game will fail, because you personally have unpopular taste.
the game is extremely small
For the quality of the given playspace, and the amount of playtime you can get from every square inch of land, this game is no less than massive. Need I remind you, by the way, that this game has a 10 year dev cycle? Destiny will be receiving content updates hard and heavy for many years to come. I suppose that compared to World of Warcraft the gamespace is small. But, using WoW as an example, the game has HORRENDOUSLY low-rez terrain, in both polycount and texture resolution, and has been developed continually for no less than 10-12 years.
you get them in the iron banner all the time, it's too easy to get these things.
*coughs loudly* BETA. Drop rates were obviously increased for the beta test. You cannon be seriously thinking that dozens of legendary items are going to be passed out like free ice cream.
unbalanced to the extreme
I honestly can't tell if you're a troll or just genuinely packing some extra chromosomes.
Have fun arguing and supporting this game like sheep in the comments.
"Anyone who disagrees with me is a sheep" That fedora is too strong. Tell me, did mommy buy it for you? Or did you order it online from her basement?

      • On size, I had that same fear. Just 1 area per planet is kinda small. What you have to remember is that even if the game isn't up to expectations, size wise, at it's core Destiny is an mmo. An mmo core means that Destiny has plenty of room to grow and meet those expectations. On loot... we played a Beta. Not all the best item drops were available. Ever consider that the styles of the gear was an reason for repeated looks. If I like my look as is and dont wanna change it but have to for the defense and bonuses and stronger weapon, I'd be very discouraged. Repeated styles with higher states means if you like your look you can keep it until you find one you like better with hopefully better stats. PvP... it may feel tacked on because you go straight into it against your allies. It does fit into the game however. Training skirmishes against allies, duking it out to see who's the Alpha wolf. But if it was Guardian vs Fallen or Hive in a serious fight, if the Guardian team loses, it'd make too much sense that you'll never be able to play as your Guardian again because as far as we know from the lore, the Fallen and the Hive want the Guardians and humanity dead not alive. As for supers in the arena... how does it make sense for your guardian to be able to do one thing in PvE yet not be able to do it in PvP? If not for the supers,Destiny would have next to no true surprises in PvP. And if you're not killing things with the Fist of Havok, maybe it's not the class for your playstyle. Whenever I saw a Titan using Fist of Havok, he/she killed someone/some people with it. Many times escaping unscathed. Keep in mind that we were only able to use 3 of the 6 supers we saw in the Beta. Titans can create an void shield which I'm fairly positive would make golden gun and nova bomb fairly useless considering you can see them coming. I hope this sways your opinions, especially on game size. I asked myself if I wanted to let fear of something that could be easily corrected over time make me miss a minute of this one of a kind game. Now I'll ask you the same. It's not perfect but then again, show me a game that does it better. That'd be hard though, as it is the first of its kind.

I suspect that you have misunderstood the function of Beta Testing. In this instance I believe Bungie are essentially performing stress tests on the server architecture. To achieve this, and therefore be able to sign off this element of the dev and release process they need: 1) Players who have no experience of the game. 2) Specific datasets to analyse against expected performance metrics. Step one or relatively easy, a Public Beta. Step two is a little more problematic. A balance needs to be struck between Beta Testers investing enough in the game to play often enough to generate the required data. Because, however, the test is of the architecture (hardware and software) large sections of the game are not required. Therefore most of the game environment is not needed or available for Beta Testing. Over the past 48 hours or so that has been one console side update of which I am aware, and a number of server outages. Presumably, Bungie have been applying patches to the server side. It is always best to keep in mind that Bungie are testing a huge amount of very complex hardware and software with our help. Destiny is their latest and greatest flagship product, so they want to ensure it works as intended. Finally,if Destiny is not what you thought it would be, then it probably isn't the game for you. Bow out gracefully and be thabnkful that you didn't buy it and then discover that you don't like it. Cheers, Gary

          • I was streaming the gameplay 15+hours a day, there was plenty to do and see way beyond what you are tearing on about. As someone who reached Vanguard Rank 7 and Cryptarch rank 22, and Iron banner rank 1 on two different characters, you are passing some heavy judgments on a game you barely scratched. This game was INTENTIONALLY locked down to only give us a taste. We only made it to level 8 and we only ever so normal loot for up to level 10, but the game goes way beyond that. Level 20 is essentially the end of the tutorial and when the rest of the game opens up. Once we start earning motes of light and the light stat on our gear, there is going to be so much more content. We essentially go past level 20 without ever having to grind past it, at least not in the same way. You will be finding gear way beyond "level 20" There is content way past "level 20 cap" only 1 mode of pvp was unlocked of I believe 8.... I am not sure what kind of math you are using for extrapolation, but I think you need to check your numbers. If you saw exotics and knew how they compared against even legendaries you would understand why they are limited. I had a in Inventory full of rare and legendary gear, and I can confirm that the small sampling of gear you got and saw, with your minuscule amount of time played, is just getting your feet wet. IT IS NOT AN MMO. It isn't even MMO elements. IT is a Social shooter. It is a new genre. IT is not boderlands, but it will have a large amount of loot. I played the hell out of both the Beta and Alpha and I didn't even see much loot crossover between the two, there is definitely stuff you aren't seeing and haven't seen. I am going to have to disagree with you on every point, even though its just your opinion. Coming from someone who has way more experience with the game, and has spent more time in it, I can with absolute confidence say, you missed out on a ton and have come to an incorrect conclusion.

            • After seeing that the final game is only 22 story missions. I expect they will be a lot longer in the final game. This was a Beta and had Accelerated XP progress. Final game will need much longer missions in order to rank up with only 22 story missions. Ultimately, I'm not going to make a decision on the content of the final game based on a very limited Beta. If you don't feel the same way don't buy the game. PVP this is what the Beta test is all about. Helping to find the flaws in the game balance. As players exploit class abilities in ways the designers didn't imagine. Final game will be better, but it's always changing.

I agree with some points you made. I feel mostly concerned with the size of the gameplay area and Campaign. Even in hard mode, story mode levels took 10 minutes to beat, and some of them repeated same environment... I hope that there will be more areas to explore other than the 4 announced planets. When game was first announced, Bungie made it seem like we could go to all planets of Solar System. Even if there will be just 4 planets to explore, I hope that story missions be longer and with more varied "tasks." Strike mission was the most fun part of both Alpha and Beta for me, still hearing that there will be just one per planet is kind of frustrating... I'll keep my pre order for the game with good faith on Bungie for their past achievements, hoping that they deliver at least in the fun department even if the game is not the giant they first promised.

              • For all you guys butthurt, this game is not going to be as great as its overly hyped up to be. The beta shouldn't even be called a real beta as it was obviously polished and just a marketing stunt, not to mention it was 25% of the actual game (confirmed by deej). Just because it's something new and different from your traditional fps doesn't make it better. They even held back from calling it an mmo because they knew it wouldnt live up to it. (You can spend hundreds or even thousands of hours on a good mmo), and with Destiny, after playing 25% of the game for 20 hours, there's not much left to do.

              • I agree with you on some parts: Okay I did play the story missions and they started to get boring. The fact that I kept going through the same place over and over was ridiculous. The game felt a little overhyped. I think that all classes are very balanced and I like them all. In PVP I do agree that you play on the same maps over and over again. I think at one point I played on Venus 6 times in a row. I loved the moon, earth was fine, Mars was probably my favorite and Venus I didn't like. Loot was fine in my opinion. the game. Though the story didn't make sense I'm sure they'll add more to it and make it better. Overall I still loved the game. And I'm excited for the release.

              • I agree that the story needs more umph, games are 10x more enjoyable when the story is well written and interesting and you actually care what you're fighting for. Ex. Kingdom Hearts, arguably one of the greatest Square Enix games ever. Now I know kingdom hearts isn't a MMO but just because a game is an MMO doesn't mean it can't have a great story line.

              • You are right in everything, at least from the thing we've seen in the beta. I think that some of this things will be better in the final release like the rotation of the PVP or maybe the loot. The thing is that you don't have to look at this things because Bungie is crying that this is not an MMORPG, so you basically have to focus on shooting and shooting is fun, not extremly fun, but fun. Shooting with friends, it's so cool.

              • There's a difference between offering feedback and bitching. Guess which one you did.

              • You do realize you were playing a Beta. Bungie wanted you to experience the world while they stress tested the networking. They would never show their whole hand in this beta. Items were, most likely contained, levels pushed up quicker with more XP boosts and areas closed off. This was not a representation of the full game, and frankly, it was one hell of a ride while it lasted. Definitely got my excited to play the final version. Plus, I was playing on an xbox 360 at 720p. The final will be running at 1080p. It looked awesome on my old machine, and, as the previous gem Halo did for the XBOX, will probably turn my wrist into getting an Xbox One. Add to that, I put about 10 hours into the Beta, more then most AAA games played to completion.

Right going to put this out there mate, your opinion is just that, not fact. You're categorically saying the game is 'bad' however in my opinion the game is very good! Please get off your internet high horse if the game isn't what you wanted it to be then just don't buy it...
