"Money doesn't buy happiness"

Just wondering what you think of this. We go through school and get a job to make money and support ourselves and our hobbies. Hopefully the job is something we enjoy, but that's not always the case. Pretty much our entire existence is about getting money. So here's the idea: you have an effectively unlimited income source to cover living costs, hobbies, vacations, etc. Not literally unlimited, but enough that you would live comfortably for the rest of your life with whatever goods and services you wanted, within reason. You could still work if you want. Do you think you'd be happy, or would you eventually get sick of it all?

  • I'd much rather just be able to live independently of money. What most people don't realize is that you really shouldn't be living for the next thing. You should be living for contentment.

    • There was a drama on TV the other year following these guys who won the lottery (they each got like 12 million or something outrageous) and none of them were directly happier just because they had the money to buy the things they wanted. Now obviously it wasn't real but the main point still stands I think. Just having money doesn't make you happy; it's all to do with your attitude to life. If the money somehow gets you the right attitude then so be it, but the money isn't necessary and won't make you happier in and of itself.

    • Depends on how financially responsible a person is, to be honest. And I don't mean people who don't just blow all their money - I mean people who can maintain relationships without the money being a source of friction. If you can do that, money is probably the most sure route to entertaining happiness.

    • Does it buy happiness? No, but it certainly helps... A lot.

    • Does money buy happiness? No. But money does get you a more stable, healthy life and causes less stress. When you're less stressed about making your next car/house/credit card payment, you can breathe more easily and relax, which might lead to happiness.
