Watch your devices' activity lights.
While playing by yourself your network activity should be pretty much nil, however when someone else joins to hack/trail you, the game has to stream data across the network. So if you notice the activity lights on your router/modem/switch* start flickering constantly all of a sudden, there's a really good chance someone is in your game.
* Depends on how your network is configured. If connecting wirelessly, you'll need to watch your access point's lights (which is probably also your router). If you're wired, watch the lights of the device closest (along the network path) to whatever you're using to play it on.

Also look for people driving motorcycles. NPCs don't drive them, only other people do.
-
The same thing happens in Dark Souls, there's a noticeable change in the world when someone is trying to invade.
-
I've always had a popup whenever I'm being hacked though Why would this be necessary?
-
But there's actually an easier way. If you pause and the game's still moving in the background, it's because someone's there.
Now this is a good and proper tip that I'd expect to read about on a guide site.

I just wish it told me whether or not the player was hacking or tailing me.
-
You can also use focus or pause the game. If everything still moves at normal speed in Focus mode, you're being invaded. Likewise with pausing.

Have black outs ready and pick a spot by a camera to hide by

Mine always flickers though.

router is on the other side of the apartment. no way
-
But my box is always flickering! I just disabled the online components though (and I can't be arsed to get the progression stuff for them either because I have all the other vehicles, and all the other guns).
-
Problem is that there are other devices connected to my router, plus I often steam music.
-
My router is downstairs on the other side of the house, so that ain't happening. But I've noticed that if you pause the game or bring up the map and Chicago plays on without you, you're in multiplayer. I noticed this with the map when I was driving and my arrow kept moving.

-blam!- it. I need to get this game.
-
That's brilliant.

Be like me - paranoid all the time. ^^v
