Interested in Destiny Raiding, but don't know what raids are?

So, if you've never done a PvE raid before, I think this video is a good starting point. This video aims to introduce people to the concept of raiding. I start with the group composition of a raid, then we go over 2 examples of MMO raid bosses, followed by a discussion of other FPS games that have done raids, and finally we cap it off with how I think Destiny raids need to be built in order to be successful (meaning fun and challenging). This video is meant to speculate and stir some discussion about the end game of Destiny. Disclaimers: Destiny is not an MMO. There is no new information in this video. We currently know nothing about raids. The first half of the video contains examples of boss fights from MMORPGs. They do not represent raiding in Destiny. Most, if not all, of this video is speculative.

  • Good video man! With there being these Raids of epic proportions. I think that there will be some really good leaders coming out of the woodworks. Raids depend a lot on their raid leader, but even more than that they depend on the group working as a whole. Also I would like to point out that Datto listed two of the EASIER raids in WoW. Another thing, WoW raids depend a lot on the gear level of the group. If you don't have the gear then you are holding EVERYONE back. I believe this will hold true in Destiny too. You need to put in work before you can be end game ready folks!!! People will also be NEEDING to adjust their builds and weapon choices for certain fights. Overall raids are for a different breed of people. They take much patience, time and EFFORT to complete. I watched you stream some DS2 yesterday too. You didn't die enough!!! HAHA!

TL;DR to follow. I think the devil walker gameplay gives us our best hint yet as to what we'll see in raids. If you watch the tank, as I'm sure we all have a million times, you see it perform a high damage/low area of effect attack (the front laser cannon), you see it deploy adds (the shanks coming out of its rear), you see the guardians are able to chip off the leg armor, and eventually the tank is forced to expose its core. If we translated these mechanics to a larger boss type character then I see the following: call outs become very important to inform the team when a big attack is coming or when adds are being deployed, movement skills will become important for dodging the big attacks, radiance will become important for raising people who couldn't avoid the big attack, and calling out/focusing damage on weak points will be important. By itself this would be a classic Tank and Spank. I also wonder if it will be possible to get aggro of bosses in Destiny. It seems like the devil walker in the E3 footage is specifically targeting someone, and it would make sense if your Titan with bubble shield can get this aggro. I've read in at least one article by a reporter covering Destiny that the Devil Walker will specifically target the person whose currently doing the most damage to it. This is interesting as that means a strong DPS character then becomes the Tank and it would be their job to kite the large attacks of the Devil Walker away from the battle group. One topic about raids that I don't think I've seen anyone notice: we've seen that your super can either be charged through getting kills or through orbs of light, and most people seem to think supers will be more or less spammable by continuing to fill that meter, but what happens during a raid boss fight if the boss isn't spawning adds? This is going to mean super use is going to be extremely restricted and charging supers will have to have some sort of priority. Going into the fight with full supers is going to be very important because orbs of light might be the only way to charge supers during the fight, and, if this is the case, who gets to pick up those orbs are going to be important. You might not want DPS scooping up all of the orbs if you're relying on radiance to keep the team buffed/healed/alive or if you're relying on a Titan to be able to tank the boss and shield through big attacks. Even if adds do spawn to refill your supers you'll probably have to prioritize who needs/gets to take care of them. With this super recharge mechanic in mind you see the establishment of a sort of new holy trinity. Titans for ranking big boss attacks, hunters/void warlocks for DPS on the boss, and titans/sun warlocks for supporting the team, picking up adds to recharge their support supers and prevent team damage, and recharging the supers of other guardians. One other thing I see as a potential raid boss hazard/mechanic is dynamic environments. These would make use of movement skills and require the type of teamwork you initially talked about in your Wow raid example. Imagine fighting a hovering boss on something like a giant turbine where a blade sweeps around every 30-60 seconds and KOs everyone it touches. You'd need someone calling out the approach of the turbine, and you need everyone to jump it. This would play exactly like the Heigan the Unclean boss you specifically mention. I agree that as a FPS viewpoint it will be much hard to see environmental effects, but this might create the necessity of an assigned "lookout" who must call out whenever an environmental hazard is getting ready to pop. IMO this role would actually mesh well with a Radiance Warlock who could buff the team, do a little DPS/pick up adds, and monitor the environment. TL;DR: 1) The devil walker is a good example of bosses we may see in Destiny due to the attack patterns we see and the tactics needed to defeat it. 2) Supers may be important to use against long boss fights and things to recharge supers may be a limited resource. If they are a limited resource and important to success, then raiding parties will have to decide who gets to recharge theirs during boss fights. 3) The environment can be used effectively to add depth/challenge to a boss fight. Something like a moving piece of the environment the calls upon contact would require people to avoid it while also dealing with the boss and boss attacks. This would add a layer of difficulty to the fights and it would become obvious who isn't paying attention.

Datto, great work as usual. Tib put in some great points as well. In response I have some questions about the length of the raid and how that would work within the framework of a shooter. A traditional MMORPG relies heavily on cooldowns as a mechanic to limit DPS. Shooters on the other hand rely on reloading and ammunition. A boss battle would have to have some way to replenish ammo or the battle cannot last an extended amount of time. Adds fill that requirement nicely. What are other ways that Bungie could do so? Ammo crates/drops? Your Ghost hacks a computer system and it spews stuff? The boss itself is an ammo piñata which relinquishes spoils throughout the battle? Another question for the group - if loot streams are individual, then wouldn't super orbs (name?) be individual streams as well IOT prevent griefing/trolling? It seems short-sighted that ninja-looting is eliminated but ninja-orbing isn't. The second/third order effect is that the notifications on the screen are also individual notes (onyx-bng dropped 3 orbs FOR ME!!!). Thoughts or counterpoints? So what are ways that could make it take 45 min just to crack the entrance of a raid? If a strike is 20-30 min of fighting, then what are they doing for 45 min? JTS

                • Your videos are awesome man, keep up the good work. Something that I started thinking about when I was watching your video and you brought up the weekly update comment was about raid "hard modes" and potential raid party size. Earlier this week we saw Destiny up on the PSN for pre-order and that on the PS3 PSN it has the comment of network players 2-12. One thing I was thinking about was if Bungie eventually created raids that would use full parties, not just up to 6, so we would actually utilize all 12 character slots. It seems like if we're supposed to go with the "or more" part of the comment then I think the potential for Destiny to have absolutely intense raids is certainly up there. This would also tie in nicely if they were to ever update the raids with harder versions of them. I'm just way to excited for this game after seeing the Devil's Lair content, I really hope we get to see/hear something about raids at E3.

Bungie has stated that we won't be required to field any particular mix of classes and abilities. I'm hoping that holds true for raids.
