Discussing Splitscreen/Guest Playing

Since i'm late for the mail sack, I figured I might just share it in the fourms. If there is splitscren, and I hope there is, something I would personally like to see is a guest system(Regarding XBox Live, as I do not own a PS3/4) simmeler to a game called Dungeon Defenders, where, since gear and leveling said gear is so important, a guest can simply select a guardian from the person who has the XBox live, and play off of that character, instead of having some sort of other system. This way, a guest can still level their gear, and progress through the game just like any other guardian.

    •
jax sedrin: Three people in the reddit thread I linked above (including myself) mentioned how not having split-screen prevents them from playing with their wives. The gamespot article linked to in the reddit post has three more people saying the same thing. And four more people in this thread (so far) said it as well. And that's just husbands talking about how they wanted to use this game as a way to spend time with their significant others, to share their interests with them, which strengthens their relationships. What about siblings in the same household? What about a parent that likes to spend time gaming with their child? What about friends and neighbors that don't own/can't afford these expensive consoles like we can? The game is about co-op. Bungie has made that very clear. But when they say "We can't make a game for every type of player", they are really saying "We're only making the game for people that have friends that own the same console and live in a different household." I've been hyping this game to my wife for several months now. I told her I finally found a game I think we can both really get into other than Halo. I already have a ton of single player games that I try to find time to play without her, but I don't want to have to choose between spending time with my wife and my love of video games. I want a game like Destiny, that I can play for hours, days, months, possibly even years with her, in the same room, and share the experience with her in person. Please. Bring back split-screen.
That's just one of the many reasons splitscreen must come back to Destiny. Help join our fight. http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post?id=65349153

      •
From Gamespot:
Split-screen co-op was a hallmark of Bungie's Halo series, but the same can't be said for the developer's next game, the multiplayer-focused shooter Destiny. The game won't have split-screen support, not because the studio doesn't like the feature, but because it doesn't fit with the developer's ambitions for the project. "We're actually not supporting split-screen in Destiny," Bungie community manager Eric Osborne told GameSpot during E3 this week. "We love split-screen. Obviously we have a legacy of supporting it. We know a lot of players love it. We love it. But we really wanted to untether guardians. Even if you're in a fireteam, you can go wherever you want. That level of freedom was really important for us. We know some players really like split-screen. Ultimately, you can't build a game to suit every single player out there." Though this year's Destiny will not have split-screen, Osborne made it clear that Bungie is always listening to feedback, suggesting that the option could be added to a future installment. "The good news for us is with a new IP you get an opportunity to set a foundation in place," Osborne said. "You get to see what players do; see what the community loves about it. You get to be reactive. And the reality is we have no idea what people are going to do, what they're going to fall in love with in this world." Destiny launches on September 9 across the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. Bungie will launch an alpha for the game on Thursday, and you can sign up today at www.GreatnessAwaits.com/Destiny. An open beta begins July 17 first on the PS3 and PS4, before coming to the Xbox 360 and Xbox One sometime later.

And I thank the Gods that split-screen is being phased out. It's actually antiquated features like split-screen that are helping to hold back the evolution of this industry and keep it at a crawl. But there's an explanation from Urk for any whiner who wants to read it.

        • I would only accept SS if the "guest" actually had an account of their own to use. Like you said, if that account was another one on that system, that would work. But no true guest accounts as we know them now.

Splitscreen is technologically impossible unless you're pushing the console to its limits, and even then it's probably not going to go well. It's like running the game twice, at the same time. Either that, or the two players would constantly be teleported to each other. Not to mention the network problems they would have to deal with. It's not like they're intentionally keeping splitscreen out just to piss people off.

              • I think its really weird that we still don't know whether splitscreen is in or out. Why the secrecy there? Its not a spoiler to the game... its a feature, like space flight, that people want to know whether it will or won't be a part of the game. Space flight was a pretty closely guarded secret as well, especially considering it was later revealed to not be included in the game. Its like, thanks for building up the suspense to disappointment- gotta clench those preorder numbers for the stockholders for Q3 right? The sad part is that there are almost equalt amounts or more of people who do not want splitscreen. If Bungie would keep it real for about 2 seconds and say whether or not the feature is in or out, they might even get more preorders. Sad thing number 2 is 99% percent of customers are not in the forum, hanging onto ever fungal strip of info like us, nor will they ever hear about the feature unless they come here to ask. SO is the need for secrecy regarding in game features ala what are my options when i pop in the game and see the start menu (not story, leveling, customization, gameplay) that pertinent?

                    • Now, Destiny is the exact example of what will happen to future gaming. All online. Only single player. They will force us to buy multiple televisions, consoles, and disks in order to play with our friends and families. This is the future. They will begin to leave last-gen consoles behind, and nothing will be in their way. We may be gamers, but truly, we have no power on our own. We need to band together, and bring the fight to them! In crossing my fingers and toes for split screen. That'll make the game more fun for me and my fiance. But if it doesn't it doesn't.

                      • I think it should be that you need a stand alone account to play on the same screen as someone else. Guest system wouldn't really work with the insane amount of customization. That goes for both vanity and skills/powers. I just can't see guest play working but splitscreen where 2 accounts play together, I certainly hope so.

                        • Me and my brother have separate GTs, but always play splitscreen on the same console. Have done for all the halo games. I really hope Destiny has good splitscreen, as this will majorly effect how much I play the game
