I suck at writing, and this damn paper is due monday

Yeah, so I have an English 2000 paper due Monday. The Topic is as follows:

"Thus, your paper should respond to the simple question: is reading and writing important? In your prewriting stage, you may want to rework the simplified version of this question to create more nuanced, or specific one. For instance, how does adding “print” or “digitally” before “important”? change the question? How about adding “for cognition” after “important”? To answer this question, you will have to not only define those key activities, but you must define the more complex term—literacy. What does it mean to be literate, especially in today’s ever-changing digital, multimedia world? Why is literacy important?"

I have it mostly written and am currently trying to revise it, and the number one bit of feedback I have is "write a better opening sentence." currently, my opening sentence is the following:
"The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines literacy as “The ability to read and write”
This sentence fits in the paper, but I need something better to go before it and open up the paper, but I can't think of shit. So, does anyone have a good opening line I could use?

  • Throw out a cool statistic that relates to your paper. "99% of humans cannot read or write" or whatever.

"Let's skip the foreshadowing and get down to business" is always the opening line I use when I meet female English teachers.

Well, you have to decide the tense you wish to write in first. Then the point of view. Then structure it. Example. While reading the Merriam-Webster dictionary I came across the definition of Literacy. It was defined as the ability to read and write, I found this to be interesting. I chose to look deeper into the meaning of the word. I began to research the root word in Latin, and it's meaning in other languages....Blah blah blah. I have gotten 95 or higher on every paper I have written in college. ask me anything.

      • Think about all the crap that wouldn't be possible without a written language, or any sort of writing for that matter.

        • Your opening sentence should be
"The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines you as a huge fag and I shouldn't have to write this paper. Also -blam!- you"
