The War On The Poor

I honestly don't know what to think of this guy. For one, I'm all for supporting the poor through government programs, but this guy seems to almost take it to the next level; he's really radical about this. Who are "them"? Thoughts? Do you agree or disagree with this video? Why?

  • You can give a man a golf club and tell him to play golf. Just because he has a club, doesn't mean he knows how to play golf. You see what I'm saying?

  • Where he does have a point is in infrastructure investment and training/education investment. Take Detroit or another Rust Belt city where poverty is high. Companies aren't going to set up operations there because the infrastructure is crap and because there is no supply of skilled labour there. But this is not really due to "them". A half-century of economic change resulted in capital flight and these municipalities becoming straight up broke. Investment can't come from that level of government. The state and federal level aren't in the financial position to roll out the massive infrastructure and education investment plans that would be needed to help turn these cities around. Extending EI or bumping the minimum wage isn't going to make a dent in the unemployment numbers in these cities since there's hardly any jobs in the first place. Just imagine the costs that would be needed to clean up Detroit. Just dealing with their bankruptcy would cost $18 billion. Repairing and rebuilding their roads and highways would cost a couple more, and so would building/renovating hospitals and schools. Then you have to hire doctors, nurses, teachers, police, and you're going to have to get them from outside the city. So who here wants to move to Detroit?

The problem we face when disagreeing is that Reich could bury any commenter under the weight of sheer experience. He served in multiple presidential administrations (Democrat and Republican), with the most recent being Labor Secretary for Clinton. He was named one of the best cabinet members of the century and has taught at Harvard and UC Berkley. I don't agree with him on some things, but his book, Supercapitalism, is the most objective and informative (and entertaining) explanation of how the balance between democracy and capitalism in the US is slipping away.

  • Support the poor that is why we are 17 trillion dollars in debt. Life is not fair if we keep giving money to them the middle class will just get worse then the middle class will turn into the poor

    • Raise minimum wage and prices go up, its that simple. Just more inflation, not a good idea.

Them would be the people at the top, those who move heaven and earth to avoid paying a living wage to workers and are happy to feed the nation on bullshit, smoke and lies so that they back them up on it. I would say inb4ignorance but this tab's been open for 15 minutes so I'm guessing I'm too late.

          • "Them" = The Republican Party and corporations It's funny because the Dems have no concern for fiscal stability or a balanced budget. Government handouts = votes. The more free stuff you can get your constituents the more likely they are to vote for you. It's a scam. Not to mention that if the lefties truly believed in what they said they would back the $100K+ they get from being in office back to the machine they support. I will agree with him on the education part. The GOP almost always turns down bills to put more funding into education (or take from the defense budget) because it's military contractors that pay for their campaigns.

I think there should be a limit to how rich an individual can be and everyone should learn to live within their financial means. We can't have a fat guy sitting on a billion dollar mountain of cash. I say $500 million is a fair limit.. If you can't learn to live with that sort of limit as a rich guy.. you are doing it wrong.
