Balrog VS Dragon

Which would win in a fight? This is what I know about the two: Balrogs: >It's an evil Maiar, sort of a LOTR equivalent of an archdemon or the like, very powerful beings of fire and malevolence. >Very large, like house sized >Immune to fire, use it as a weapon >Durin's Bane (the Balrog in Fellowship Of The Ring) was able to seriously wound Gandalf The Grey, though it's body died at the end of the battle (It's spirit presumably survived). Whether Gandalf actually died before being carried off by the eagle to Lothlórien is up for debate, but this does reflect greatly on the strength of Durin's Bane, and indeed all Balrogs. Gandalf is an extremely powerful being, and it takes a foe of tremendous power to threaten him. >Gothmog, the former leader of the Balrogs, was killed when it was submerged in water, which put it's flames out. We can assume this method of extermination applies to all Balrogs. >Whether or not Balrogs could fly, or if they had or even needed wings to fly, is really unknown. Jackson's adaptation shows Durin's Bane with wings, but flightless, so for the sake of picking a side we'll look at this hypotheitcal Balrog that way. Remember, however, that the Balrogs are/were Maiar, and probably had the ability to choose whether or not they had wings at any given time. Dragons: >You know what a Dragon is. Big, scary, breathes fire, flies, all that jazz. >Dragons are huge, any given Dragon would likely be many times the Balrog's size >Dragon scales form great armor, making it impervious to most weapons. >Like the Balrog, Dragons are impervious to fire. >Dragons possess great intelligence and physical strength >It is unlikely that a Dragon would be killed by water like a Balrog, because it's physical form is made of flesh and bone. Which do you think would ultimately win?

More details to consider: Water does not kill Balrogs or Dragons, but they are affected by it. Tolkien dragons cannot breathe fire when doused or submerged in water, and if a Balrog's flames are quenched the fire is replaced with a slimy substance. Gothmog's death was due to his fierce battle with Ecthelion, who dealt him a fatal blow to the stomach by ramming him with his spiked helm into the Fountain of the King, drowning them both. Both dragons and balrogs can regain their fire capabilities over time. Dragons also have a critical weakness: the underside. They can be wounded easily if struck in the stomach, and a blow to the chest can be fatal. Smaug was an exception, though; his underside was scaled and crusted with gold and gems (excluding a single bare spot on his left breast). It is also possible that balrogs cannot be killed by standard weapons, and that only powerful magic or enchanted weapons such as Glamdring can harm them.

Like I replied to someone else. Smaug > Balrog in The Fellowship Smaug < Any other Balrog Glaurung and his ilk > Any other Balrog With maybe Gothmog beating any Dragon that isn't legendary tier like Ancalagon.

  •
Balrogs: >Immune to fire, use it as a weapon Dragons: >Like the Balrog, Dragons are impervious to fire.
Am I being retarded, or does this kind of answer the question? From what I remember the Balrog uses a whip made of fire as its weapon, or am I being too specific to this Durin's Bane fella? I know nothing of the lore beyond what I have seen in the films.

Depends on the dragon, really. But generally, dragons were more of the brute force tanks of Morgoth's armies. The Balrogs were usually captains/leaders. Dragons like Glaurung or Ancalagon could easily take out almost any Balrog. Any common drake would probably be unable to do so, at least against some of the more powerful and experienced Balrogs, such as Gothmog. I'm leaning towards dragons, but really depends on the more specific details. Also, Gandalf is not really all that powerful.

        • A dragon like Smaug wouldn't bat an eye, he'd just crush the Balrog. But if it were a little more balanced as far as size is concerned, the Balrog wins. A dragon can hardly pick up a Balrog, and Balrogs get weapons.

        • It's basically a lizard, so water would be it's best friend.
