The common Halo fanboy fallacy.

"Fewer people like Halo: Reach? B-but it's a fantastic game!" "Halo needs to innovate, not stay in the past!" "Significantly fewer people like Halo 4? B-but it's a good game!" "Halo needs to innovate, not stay in the past!" "Nobody's playing Halo anymore?" "Well, I guess Halo just isn't popular anymore." I keep seeing this posted. Dumbasses want "innovation", yet look where it's gotten the franchise? Not only this, but these idiots have the audacity to turn around and tell me that the Halo franchise is no longer popular like it used to be. It's one thing to have a preference for Halo: Reach or Halo 4, but another to turn around, slap pro-Halo 2/3 fans in the face with "m-muh innovation!", and say "well, I guess that's the end of the road for Halo, we should just simply stop asking for it to be great again." I hope I'm not the only one noticing this bullshit, especially on places like Waypoint and sometimes even Neogaf.

  • I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the worst thing about Halo is its fanbase. In fact, the Halo fanbase ruined the franchise. R.I.P. Halo 2001-2012

          • Halo 4 wasn't innovation, they just took mechanics of other existing games and mashed up. That's not innovation, that's just adding stuff the game didn't need.

Halo may not seem as popular as it used to be thanks to both Call of Duty and the latest installments deviating from itself. However, it still has massive haul on name alone. It isn't dead (yet), and if Halo 5 is good, Halo could very well regain its spotlight in the video game scene and top the charts once more. But just what would it mean for Halo 5 to be good? If Halo 5 is just the original trilogy with a few new bells and whistles, will it really revive Halo? Will the community truly be satisfied? I think the series does need to innovate. Halo 5 not only needs to come as close to perfection on all its modes - a well written story with replayable Campaign missions, a good complementary AI mode like Firefight, a robust Forge editing tool and refined Theater mode, a wealth of custom options and a balanced, competitive multiplayer system with good maps and playlists - but it also needs to introduce something new. Halo 5 needs something the Halo series has never seen before. It needs to either take an idea that hasn't been done well before and turn it on its head, or bring a completely new way to play shooters to consoles. If Halo 5 is going to stand out among Destiny, Titanfall, Battlefield, Killzone, and what's left of the Call of Duty juggernaut in this new generation, it needs to redefine console shooters all over again. This does not mean being a follower. Halo 5 is not going to succeed by trying to capitalize on mainstream shooter elements. Halo especially cannot benefit from these because they simply don't work with its mechanics. We've had two games to show for that and I don't think anyone has the patience to try them for another 3 years. No, what Halo 5 needs is a new idea. It does not need mere gimmicks or shiny new weapons and vehicles (not alone), but instead an addition offering more value than everything added to the series combined. When you boot up Halo 5, it should do nothing less than blow your mind. An impossibly ambitious goal, isn't it? I mean, it's not like 343i doesn't have the ability to do it. They have Microsoft - one of the largest corporations in the world - banking on the Halo IP and Titanfall IPs to be the flagships for the Xbox One. They have some of the most talented arists in the industry. One of the programmers who recently left has a patent on the lighting technology she developed for them. There are great competitive minds within the company now who have millions of posts, videos and articles of feedback accumulated over a decade to guide them. There's really no excuse for them to fail. Halo once moved units, and it has all the capacity to do so again. But what if they do fail? What will happen if Halo 5 blows ass? What if Halo fans give up and start jumping to PS4? Well, unlike all these other games, Halo goes beyond the Xbox. TV series, books, merchandise, and one of the most iconic scores in entertainment will continue to keep up its presence. It will always be a big Sci-Fi series and have a presence in e-sports, so a bad game streak will at most put the games into a state of limbo. Microsoft is surely not going to put out the fire, and Titanfall can't completely replace Halo. If Halo is to prove it's still the king, then it's about damn time it stopped screwing around and sat back on the throne.

                • The ignorant will continue to stay ignorant. They don't know better. Only those of us who came before Reach and Halo 4 really know what Halo was and is and what innovation for the series should be like. I always found it funny they made up all those hilarious statements despite the proof of Halo's decline and how the 'innovation' has failed them. Halo 1, 2, and 3 are all different games and changed over time, that was good innovation. This post Reach crap will forever poison Halo. We no longer have a game based on skill but cheap gimmicks to let players get away with crap they never could in previous games. And no, those that dislike Reach.Halo 4 are not bad at them. They are too easy of a game and thats the issue. No challenge and no satisfaction in winning. Why play that when I can play Halo 3 and earn exp winning games and suffer the actual consequences of quitting or losing? This innovation they speak of is dumbing down Halo more to make it easier for the masses, not to improve satisfaction of skill and rewarding those who do well in matches.

                  • I think that Halo needs to re-revolutionize the FPS genre. The mechanics were nearly perfect in Halo 3. I never played a match that I didn't feel was fair or fun. In Halo 4 I can go on a killing spree with a shotty, and then request another one be dropped, so that I can continue to whore the power weapon. It seems to me that 343i made great looking maps but didn't calculate how to make those maps balanced and interesting.

                      • The changes made between each game are what makes Halo so unique. I've played every one, multiplayer as well as beating the campaigns several times over each. And I can tell you, if you showed me a screenshot, or a map, or a cutscene, I would be able to tell what game it was from instantly. I'll just use Call of Duty as a counter-example, since it's used most often as such, anyway. Looking at a screenshot from MW2, Black Ops, MW3, Black Ops 2, or even Ghosts if the shot didn't include a dog, I couldn't really tell you for sure what game it was from. Not enough changes between games to give each it's own unique feel. One could never mistake a screenshot from Halo 2 for one from Halo 3, or one from Reach with one from Halo 4. I could even tell if a screenshot was from Halo 3 or ODST, and those two even use the same graphics engine. I personally disagree with some of the changes made in Halo 4 compared to Reach (I was mostly OK with Reach's multiplayer), but I can at least appreciate the fact that 343 made it it's own game, unmistakeable for any of the others.

                        • To be honest all Halos play the same to me, same generic story trying to be dramatic...some are faster paced, others are slower, they all basically have the same weapons and vehicles...Reach and 4 just have extra gadgets, and other than that, there is no difference. Nothing wrong with any of the games, nothing too much different either.

                          • My friend had the same attitude. Change Halo. Change Halo. Change Halo. Well they did, and look what happened. You can always improve a game with shiny new features, game modes, and custom options that don't kill the nonrandom equal-starts arena gameplay. I don't consider it a Halo fanboy fallacy. I consider it a nonHalofan casual fallacy. The arena Halo fanboys will want to sink with the ship that they started with, not some Halo-ish CoD ship.

Funny how that now they have a new title to launch all this crapping in your own yard seems like a good idea ... rather than start moaning now why didn't they do something about it at the time - how is it that they have forgotten that it was them that wrote the game ?!?
