When the Xbox 360 and PS3 were announced I was ecstatic. I picked up my 360 as soon as the second shipment hit store shelves, and I was the happiest kid on the planet. The leap from the original Xbox and the PS2 to the seventh gen consoles was massive.
But now I'm kinda "meh" to the eighth generation. I dunno if it's because of the cynicism I've developed towards the video game industry or the fact that I already have a machine that has games which look and perform better than any of the launch titles.
I dunno, I'm just not feeling the "magic" this generation. Can anyone else relate?

Games sell consoles, and there's not any games out at the moment that excite me on either.

Edited by Scithe: 11/19/2013 1:12:27 AMWell when the 360 and pa3 came out they had new features, and we're huge steps from their previous consoles. Now the X1, and the ps4 are just upgrades with better graphics and some minor new features. It doesn't seem as "magical" or "revolutionary" because there are no gigantic new items and such.

Yes. Yes yes yes. 1000 yes-s.

Edited by Spinager: 11/19/2013 1:13:10 AMMaybe it has to do with you being almost 8 years older.
-
Exactly. The hype for next gen is just too much. Ps3 and Xbox 360 are way better than the next gen.
-
I think it's how gaming is overall right now. Something like VR or a 4D experience is the kind off innovation needed to in order to give off the "WOAH!" effect.

Familiarity breeds contempt. Whilst that's not quite the case here, the sentiment does apply. Back when the 360/PS3 was coming out it was a wonderous box full of stuff that made a great game appear. Now everything is dissected to pieces by the internet down to every pixel and frame. The more you learn about something like that they less :0: factor it has. The cynicism everyone has got from the internet doesn't help. You are exposed to an unending list of complaints and analysis of a game if you go to a forum about it, this all begins to have an effect on people. When you see a complaint, suddenly it can click and forever ruin a tiny part of the game. All those clicks add up and suddenly something that you liked (say Halo 4 for me) gets a tidal barrage of bitching and complaints and shit thrown at it. And suddenly a great game with a few flaws starts to look like a dull game with big problems. Increased reporting on every cough, sneeze and fart made by a developer takes away the magic as well. All the mystery and wonder is taken out of how they make a game and patch it when you see a twitter feed of moaning or a forum filled with abuse. It all adds up and takes it's toll on people. The cynicism is then passed on (Again using Halo 4 for me) I now complain about how 343 have -blam!-ed it up because I've been able to see what they did and realised that I didn't actually like that a whole lot. If you take away the shiny coating, everything tends to look like shit underneath... ^I hope this makes some sort of sense^ I'm night-posting again and it's 3:30am and it might make more sense in my head than my words. I might tidy it up/clarify it in the morning.

I'm just the opposite. I didn't get a 360 for about a year after launch, but I preordered an xbox one.

Tech doesnt equal beter games and also...there isn't the leaps in technical prowess like before. More subtle things like water, particles, and lens flare effects in graphics. And for other things? More of what was capable ex. even more zombie count in DR3
-
Lack of launch titles can probably attribute to that. If CoD Ghosts and BF4 were both releasing exclusively for the next gen I'd probably be beyond pumped. I'm still picking them up but I've already played both so I'm not that excited. Aside from those 2 games I only have $5 down on DR3 and I doubt I'm going to pick that up right away. After the initial launch their are only a hanful of games I'm really looking forward to. I'm kinda looking forward to Spartan Assault because my phone get's extremely hot when I play it and it makes it un-responsive. I'm obviously looking forward to Destiny just like everyone else. Titanfall looks like it could have potential. To be completely honest the game I'm looking forward to the most is Peggle 2, it makes me question what type of gamer I've become.

I agree, they're just cheap PCs.
-
This same thread will be made 10 years from now about the ps5 and next Xbox
-
I wish everyone would just stop with this 'magic' shit and just realise they are talking about -blam!-ing nostalgia.
-
Of course it isnt magical. PC is already years ahead.
-
being magic is suffering.
-
You're much older now than you were then.
-
Maybe it's because we're all 8 years older.
-
It's because you're older. Kids get too excited for things. 11 year olds are screaming about the Xbox One and the PS4.
-
We're starting to reach a plateau of technological achievement, what do you expect? I mean the only things they can do now is improve the graphics and the pixel count and graphics. I doubt there's much more that they can really do at this point... At least they did that and made the Kinect better, menus faster and added Snap and Skype in and threw in a better controller... I'm hyped.
it's because of the cynicism I've developed towards the video game industry
Pretty much my response to next-gen.
-
You've grown up. Good.
-
Probably because we were starry-eyed kids back then, and didn't realise how much MS would butt-blam!- us.

Get a 3DS

If you make a contract with me, I can make this generation as magical as possible
