Why wont Bungie fix their website?

Bungie.net has seen a lot of changes this year - many of them being welcome additions. However, we've also had some things regress, including its moderation. Conversation on Bungie.net was mostly productive and engaging; however, now that the rules are all but non-existent, it seems that the number of posters abusing either the new tools or each other are increasing. Quality discussion has been replaced by spam, derogatory slurs, trolls and inappropriate or otherwise indecent posts that have made civil discourse in this forum a rarity. I don't understand how Bungie expects me or a new Destiny fan to have sensible discussion about their game or anywhere else in their forums. Productive threads are often buried by nonsense; criticism or unpopular opinions are flooded with flaming and slurs - things no decent website (nor B.net old) would even allow. Because users are expected to moderate for themselves, inappropriate content stays around longer. As a user, all I can do is hide these threads or mute these users, but this doesn't serve as much of a deterrent like a locked thread or publicly banned user would. It doesn't encourage better behavior nor improve the quality of the discussion, but instead fills my front page up with + signs and sweeps the issue under the rug. Threads with perfectly healthy and appropriate discussion can be globally hidden because the system is too easy to abuse. The Trolls who happen to get caught in this net can make accounts faster than before, or impersonate other users to continue trolling. Private groups may have more "streamlined" topics, but are not exempt from the sites issues, nor do they solve it. The web team has done well to improve and enhance the site since its launch, but the current state of the forums is absolutely unacceptable. We're nearing an important beta period where many new people will join the site, but I can't imagine a new player feeling welcome around the forums, nor can they be expected to use the new tools when the current community has been unable to self moderate efficiently in the last year. To quote a line from the weekly update, “Sometimes things just don’t work together and we have to rip them out”. Your own website needs some changes not only to certain parameters within the system, but also in the way content is filtered and moderated. The current state of operation is ineffective in promoting productive discussion and discouraging immature behavior. I ask that the web team please rectify the situation as soon as possible for the sake of the lurkers, new fans, and the old ones who would like to have healthy discussion. I don't expect Bungie.net to suddenly become a gentleman's choir because the internet will always be the internet. Still, we'd at least be on a more civil path as we head into the next generation.

  • Long story short? Pride. They refuse to believe that the old system is better than the one they spent all this time and effort on and they are pretty much ignoring any post with the word "moderation" in it by responding: "You have power etc. Mute them etc.". This is not cleaning up the site, it is pushing the dirt under a rug. I even suggested an idea that I believe would vastly help the situation and DeeJ said " They thought of that. There is a reason it wasn't put in." He never mentioned a reason though... TL;DR System is not changing no matter how much logic you throw at it. Suffer through and hope Destiny is badass.
Threads with criticism or unpopular opinions are flooded with troll and flame responses - often appalling stuff the old site (or any decent website) would never allow.
The problem with the mute system is that it doesn't solve anything. The mute system is the equivalent of covering your eyes and shouting "Nothing's wrong!" when your house is literally burning to the ground while you're inside. The mute system itself is not a bad thing, but when there are practically no rules anymore (the old site had an extremely fair set of rules that were enforced) there is only constant shit drowning out any worthwhile conversation, and the most we can do is close our eyes and pretend that the problem is going away. Meaning needs to be brought back to the Ninja banner, because right now it feels like a simple trophy for something that merely used to be relevant.

        • How many of you where even there for glory days? I mean really, this is the first time I've come back fully since old flood was nuked and it seems pretty much the same, if not, a bit slower since the old days. Apart from that, I don't really see a problem.

I completely agree with you, From the Ashes. The site has had a horrendously sharp decrease in quality because of the increase in "shit posts" or posts that directly insult another user. I get that the Mods have a larger responsibility now, but they should still do at least the usual level of something to combat this.

          • I've never spoken out against the site or the changes, but I agree with you. Sadly nowadays, people who actually post interesting and/or sensible threads are in the minority.

          • This is why Bungie shouldn't have good things; they ruin them. They've done something comparable to what both Microsoft and Sony have done, by following up on a fairly good product with a flawed one. Though the PS3 wasn't that flawed, it just was too pricy for the release.

I like this moderating system, to be honest, but I also like the old moderation system as well. I have already suggested a way to have it so the users have some power, but not too much. B.old, ordinary posters had very little power, and could exercise that power by pressing the report button. Now? Ordinary users have too much power. I'd prefer to have it mixed as in the users in all get some power, but not enough to completely destroy a person's bnet experience. I'm thinking of it like the Tribunal system in League of Legends, where if enough users say that a person is bad, it gets sent up the chain of command where it is ultimately decided whether or not the user was toxic to the community and receives a ban and/or a global mute decided by the senior moderators and employees. Edit: For example: I have been globally muted as well as a few other level-headed posters in the Off-Topic. This was attributed to one person with many alts that has openly admitted many times that he found a way to exploit this system of moderation.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I preferred Play Nice. It was a little too strict and took some of the fun out of posting, but it was a lot better than the massive amount of shit-posting going on right now.
