Internet forums and chatrooms can have positive effects that should be more widely acknowledged, experts say.
The call comes after Oxford University researchers carried out an analysis of 14 different studies looking at how young people use the internet.
The review - published in the Plos One journal - said a number of studies had found a link between internet use and self-harm and suicide.
But it said others had found the internet could be a positive influence
But the researchers said some studies had shown that internet forums could support and connect socially isolated people.
There were also examples where forum users encouraged positive behaviour, advised others to seek help and congratulated each other for not harming themselves.
Report author Prof Keith Hawton said: "Communication via the internet and other electronic means has potential roles in both contributing to and preventing suicidal behaviour in young people.
"Rather than concentrating primarily on ways of blocking and censoring such sites, we should think about online opportunities to reach out to people in emotional distress."
This makes a ton of sense and that bottom 2 lines goes against the blocking of websites to do with suicide under the government ban system to be implemented in the UK.
When I was bullied I listened to my music and drawn some......questionable things but because I didn't want to talk about it, I used drawings and music to help deal with the bullying.
The older generation only ever look at the negative side of pretty much anything, especially when it comes to technology and the internet which they act like its the anti-christ.
What do you guys think? Besides Porn what over advantages can you think of for the internet?

Online communities can really damage a persons ability to grow into a well rounded human being.

These Oxford people...I wanna know which forums they checked. I kinda disagree with this. While I agree that it's great for us "socially isolated" lot and we've all seen at some point it's stopped people from committing suicide, it doesn't really help us stop being socially isolated, I think it reinforces it and keeps us that way. Which, c'mon there are many ways you can put it, but it isn't good.

The flood would encourage suicide.

and then theres the #offtopic.

If they were to look at these forums as part of their research they'd probably ban internet forums.

Well it depends how you use it. For instance I can, if I'm lonely or don't have time to meet a friend face-to-face, either text one of my personal friends or get on here and laugh it up for a few minutes. I have a feeling some people, myself included, spend too much time on here though... And others take it too seriously.
