PS4 WILL NOT support external HDDs

http://kotaku.com/ps4-wont-support-external-hard-drives-1455066760
Sony has just posted a massive PS4 FAQ on the PlayStation Blog, and it's full of granular details surrounding the next-gen console. One noteworthy piece of news: the PS4 won't support external hard drives, although the internal hard drive will be swappable. So no, you can't plug another hard drive into your machine for extra storage, Sony says. But you can upgrade the 500 GB hard drive that comes with the PS4, so long as it meets certain standards:
"PS4 is equipped with a 5400 RPM SATA II hard drive. Users can choose to install a new hard drive so long as it complies with these standards, is no thicker than 9.5mm, and is larger than 160GB."

I thought Sony already said that they would support external HDDs already... This is a completely stupid move on Sony's behalf. I hope they'll change their mind. At least you can still freely upgrade your internal HDD though.

  • On top of not supporting external hard drives (which you will need because every game on PS4 has a mandatory install), the PS4 can't play MP3 files (music) won't network with any other device (DNLA), can't play CDs (and by extension, rip music off one), and worst of all.... Remote play is only possible if you're connected to the same WiFi that your PS4 is connected to (play your PS4 games with your vita while you're in your home! Where your console so happens to be too...) Oh and the killer...no 4k support. That's right all this chest pounding about BF4 and CoD: Ghosts being 1080p on PS4 and truth is when these franchises make the jump to 4k resolution the only console you'll get to play those games on at 4k will be the Xbox One. 4k is where all manufactures are headed, just like 720p TVs aren't sold as much as 1080p TVs are, so will 4k high def phase out the 1080p. Who was the company that saw it coming? Microsoft. Yeah, Sony is a real awesome company right? Looking after all us gamers right? Waiting 2 weeks before launch and then drops a bomb about how inadequate the system will be a year or two down the road. I'm so freakin upset...

    • >2013 >5400RPM drives I know both consoles are using them, and that they're cheap as hell for OEMs, but man do I hate them. Had a 5400 drive in my laptop once, took forever to do anything.

      • I understand the 4k complaint but it's silly to even be talking about that right now. It's not like 4k is absolutely taking over right now. I know many people that still haven't even made the jump to HD sets yet. Just like 3D tv's 4k will be in a very very small amount of households for a good amount of time. It takes years for prices to become anywhere near reasonable.

        • The most you could do with a external HDD on ps3 was to store save files and music, movies. Thats it. Because of that I dont get why its a big deal. Unless you happen to have 100+ gb's of save data and media.

          • Externals inevitably are slower as they're 'bottlenecked' by the speed of the usb. Standard will be good enough. Would upgrade to ssd if it really bothered me.

            • On one hand, 500GB is enough for me. On the other, games like Killzone that are 50GB... it won't take too long to fill it up.

Well, well, well......well, well. it appears as though Sony was holding back some info until they had a pretty good number of preorders

              • Meh, 500 GB is more than enough for me. I've gotten along fine for 7 years with a 20 GB Xbox 360.

                  • Seems like Sony is still sorting out some licensing stuff (the MP3 debacle) as well as things like this. Not an issue for me because I only use my consoles to play games (might be different if I lived in America), but I don't see why it won't be added in a later update.

                  • Atleast you can change the internal one. If the Xbox One's HDD was upgradeable I would switch it out for a 1TB HDD.

                    • What the fu.ck? I know that Microsoft doesn't support internal HDDs but at least you can link up an external HDD to maximise your space. On PS4 you can only have one HDD. If you fill it up, tough, shit, you'll have to swap it out... Why can't they both support external and internal HDDs?

                    • For now, you don't need more than 500GB. I'm sure within the first six months, Sony will add the option.

Let's be very clear. You will be able to replace your hard drive with SATA II 9.5mm discs only. Sony will NOT support: External hard drives USB media media servers CD playback MP3 playback DLNA If you want to listen to music or play background music while gaming, you must use Sony's Music Unlimited subscription based service; however there will be no music visualizer. EDIT: I forgot to mention that Sony also 'clarified' that remote play will only work over local WiFi... You must also download the day one patch before you can use the BlueRay player for movies.

I bet all those people who pre-ordered months ago are glad Sony is telling them what there console can't do 4 weeks before launch.

                            • You complain about external hdd connection... Get over it and join the future that's already history actually and use DLNA like everyone else instead of a stupid cable and hdd right next to your console
