Steam now has more than 65 million active accounts. The figure marks a 30 percent rise in players over the last year. The video game digital-download platform also boasts daily peak concurrent users of more than 6 million.
Of course there are some differences between XBL and Steam, such as XBL hosting games bought in brick-and-mortar stores. But it's still a significant moment in the life of Steam.

Isn't steam free and for Xbox live you have to pay?

Free vs. Paying every year What was expected?
-
it is good to see steam doing so well. one day it just may surpass the actual amount of users on consoles. and not just the ones who are willing to pay for live.
-
Gaben to replace jesus as the savior of the christian faith.

Oh frabjous day callooh callay!

All hail Gaben are lord and saviour.

Hardly surprising considering that Steam is one of the best gaming services out there. XBL started out incredibly well, but has seriously been going downhill since 2009.
-
I mean steam is free and all and does have sales, but honestly I thought it surpassed it a while ago...
-
Well, steam is free and xbox live isn't, so I don't see how it is significant.
-
I thought it already passed everything else years ago.
-
Eh. I downloaded Steam for the hell of it but I've never used it once before. I'm sure there are others like me.

I think the bigger question here is... How the hell does a game like Dota2 dominate the top 100 most played games list? The game is dumb. Has way too much stuff in it..... (Which is a bad thing, I'll tell you why in a sec) Quantity =/= Quality This is true for the population counters as well. Just cause 500k+ people play Dota2 every minute of everyday, doesn't make the game good. (I'd imagine half of that count play the game just because it's "Popular" and they want to be part of the crowd) Just like 65 million users doesn't have any bearing on..... well..... whatever point your trying to make.
-
To everyone saying this is because of XBL subscription fee: From the article:
Microsoft's Xbox Live has 48 million accounts — around half of whom reportedly paid extra for a gold subscription to play online in 2010
They are counting both Silver and Gold accounts.
-
Wait what? I thought everyone and their mother had steam already. Its free, you just download it and its basically the easiest way to get PC games. Surprised it took this long to pass live.
-
active accounts? not really. whenever someone turns their computer on it usually launches it. so you can't really say active because there is a good amount of people who have an account but don't touch steam.
-
Interesting. With all of Europe being predominantly PC Gamers (by a vast majority) I had thought that Steam always had more users than LIVE.
-
All praise lord Gaben!

Yeah, I have a Steam Account. I haven't logged onto it in a year but I have one. My question what does "Active accounts" mean in that first sentence? 65 million users have logged on recently? Or 65 million account have activated their account by confirming their email?
-
I could see that. Steam doesn't require a subscription.
