This post assumes that Destiny will have a resource and crafting system of some form Veterans of RPG games, specifically MMO's (I know, Destiny is a shared-world shooter), will agree with me that all-to-often resource gathering is boring, with the only incentive being the crafting at the end. You run around,pick-in-hand and spend hours hunting down ores, or spending large amounts of money to buy from vendors (think Skyrim, WoW). This can be solved. A loot based resource system, where you get your materials and components from dead enemies and vehicles, would be far more entertaining. I don't mean for it to be an obnoxious system that requires you to loot every body, more like only bosses and vehicles drop materials, and the quality/quantity of the items from a vehicle would depend on how damaged it was. Now of course what was fun about Skyrim style mining/gathering was that by exploring places (like the Throat of the World) players could reap rewards in the form of resource deposits. We know that Destiny will have mile-long tomb ships, and other forgotten and spooky places, so what if these locations contained caches of resources or had rare components that could be looted? The perks of these two ideas are that looting is purely combat and exploration based, that way you don't feel "obligated" to check every body, container, or have trouble finding resources, there will be places where there clearly is loot in every box, and places that obviously have no loot. Also if the resources/components that could be looted from vehicles were affected by how the vehicle was destroyed, then it would encourage precision kills and add a new dimension to killing your enemies* (in Skyrim you could still wear that bandit's armor after lighting him on fire and dragon-shouting him off a cliff, that's fun, but not exactly realistic lol! [yes, I understand dragon shouts aren't realistic either]). Is this a good idea, or should Destiny stick with mining and refining? Or just not have resource gathering at all? *So if your fireteam has a Hunter, let him shoot the alien out of the drivers seat while the other two distract it, it'd make for some fun set-ups and reward the hard work.

  • Id just like to see resources given as loot for events and bosses and pvp, Lets say you do vanguard tiger strike, and its on the moon , then give the loot possibility of 10 helium things, so you may get 10 resources and a shitty blue, but w/e, do the same for the other planets. then you dont have to spend 2 hours doing missions to get 5 iron or something, or just increase the amount to be on par with spin metal.

    • at the end of the day it always boils down to two ideas: do you make it quick or do you make it worth while. see more traditional mmos went with the make it quick idea. you walk up to a resource node click it, wait a few seconds and bam. done. to me this is very very bad and it leads to stale boring gameplay and is very repetitive. However the making it worthwhile idea is how any game should do it. think about dragon age 2 if you ever played it. resources are rare but once you found them you could pretty much use them whenever you wanted. overall getting them should be fun but it shouldn't be forced to be something that you do over and over again.

    • Resource gathering or even traditional grinding doesn't seem very likely to me in Destiny. Console-FPS fans would hate it, and that's Bungie's target audience.

I dont think it will have resource gathering, because I dont see crafting being part of this game, but if it is, then your idea would work. Just like traditional RPGs, you go to an area that you know has the materials you want, and then gather them. This idea is the same, it just makes gathering a lot more entertaining, and enhances the feeling of accomplishment.
