How cross platform play could work.

Something just occurred to me, it's probably nothing new, but I haven't seen it really discussed in any forums. As a result of bungie having control over all destiny servers, as opposed to having them slit up between Microsoft and Sony, this has given many gamers (like myself) the hope of cross platform play in destiny. But there is one thing that I realized destiny would need to have this work. It's own friend/social-like system. Regardless if all your friends are playing on playstation, and you on your Xbox and playing on the same servers, you won't be able to see any of them on your dashboard. Thus, you won't be able to invite them to your party or fire teem. Making actually playing with them impossible. If destiny has a system (assuming Sony and Microsoft allowed it) that let you have your own friends list within the game that bypassed what system your playing on, cross platform play could then be possible. I'm pretty much in the dark with the actual technical aspect this would require, but I'm interested in what other guardians have to add to the subject. Do you think this would be possible?

  • I think this would be a fantastic feature. I have friends that own Destiny across PS4 & XBone and I would love to be able to play with all of them. It has been done before, Valve made cross platform play possible on PS3 and PC. I agree with Jeh that it would require a stand alone friend system but I think that is an acceptable annoyance for the benefits that it would introduce. Bungie, I think you should seriously consider making this compatible across the current gen systems.

  • what about cross platform such as PS3 and PS4 everybody is talking differences between Sony and Microsoft here how about just keeping it in the family like we have PSP,PS2,PS3,and the newest member of or family PS4 we have Destiny on both 3 and 4 and would love to help each other out but can't I see very little reason why this can't be offered within the family dynamic

The Edge article had a quote that strongly implied there would be no cross platform play. With different systems and data stored server side they'd have to, instead of maximizing performance on a system by system basis, make one middle of the road set of settings so everyone would have the same performance. On top of that you have different controllers and would end up with one controller having a general consensus of being the superior one and bring up a whole set of complaints relating to it. So in the end just get a PS4 with the rest of your friends. Microsoft lost Bungie's Halo, there's no Gears of War, they don't get the exclusive content for Destiny. When even developers like Bungie and Epic Games are taking a step back from the console they produced exclusively for and are going to the competition and adding incentives to their games to convince you to switch you know which company to avoid. Hell, Cliff Bleszinski who obviously knows a thing or two about the game industry believes because Sony forced Microsoft's hand with their PR nightmare will make Microsoft force developers to tack in more and more paid DLC and microtransactions to cover the losses they incurred not being able to screw over their customers. That's the guy who worked as the former design director for Epic Games with 20 years of experience talking. Long story short, people who know a hell of a lot more than us about the gaming industry are predicting a lot of bad stuff when it comes to Microsoft. Get a PS4 with the rest of your friends. • I had a thought train rolling once where my idea was for there to be four main servers. One ultimate server that's over all the other servers that facilitates logins to the game and lets a system know who else is online in a friend list. Under the ultra server are three mega servers. One for Xbox, one for Playstation, and one for both. At the main menu, players would have the option of joining either their system server or the shared server. That way players who don't want to play with other systems or don't have any other system friends can play on a less buggy and less laggy server and the players who want to play with other system friends can. The shared sever would have to be coded different and have a code translator to allow the access of both Xbox and Playstation, but hey, cross-system gameplay. Also, this could allow a quite literal system war, and idea which is pretty funny if you think about it.

        • Sony doesnt mind cross platform and leaves that coice to the devs even on the ps3. Microsoft on the other hand has the say so in that matter and dont allow it which is why ff14 is ob playstation and pc only

          • I think this is entirely doable as they are already tying in to Xbox, PSN, Google and Facebook with what they have now. I am assuming it will be similar and easily import your friends lists from these. As well as coordinate through multiple channels...
