Difficulty, Destiny, and you.

Hey all, it's been a pretty long time since I made a speculation thread for an upcoming game on this site, hell, I think it was pre-ODST that I made my last one. But I'm back, with more of my juicy goodness. Or at least, I'd hope. A word of warning though: this is a wall of text, and no, I will not sum it up for you at the end. For all you TL;DRers, take a look at the fancy graphic above. If that's not enough, prepare for the long haul. The idea? Difficulty. I've seen numerous discussions about difficulty on Destiny, from scaling difficulty in public events to generating more dangerous situations in the rest of the playable world, reducing damage tolerance, or increasing enemy health and the like. However, what if it was actually something quite different? What if each enemy was stronger than the last, and each locale more deadly than those before? Think about it: The Fallen are seen in the E3 2013 demonstration on Earth, and are relatively easy to kill aside from Rixis and the Devil Walker. This could coincide with the difficulty level of the game. Earth is where everyone begins, and is under constant attack by The Fallen. Public events are themed around The Fallen trying to assault key locations on Earth, trying to weaken human defenses. Their skill is lacking and their weapons weak, but their numbers prove to be a small challenge for new Guardians. This is where we see a difficulty scaled for levels 1-20, imagining that 20 is not the highest level attainable. So you've hit level 20 and The Fallen are just too easy for you now. What next? Now, we move onto the Cabal. Big, lumbering war beasts, carrying huge weaponry and wearing some bulky armour. Their location? Mars, the closest planet to Earth. The second planet you will likely visit on your journey. They are stronger than The Fallen, but attack in fewer numbers. Their weapons are powerful, and if you're caught in the action for too long without cover, say goodbye to your face. A small step up in difficulty from The Fallen, Cabal soldiers put up more of a fight, challenging the player to approach strategically while still not eliminating the fun factor. From level 20 to 40, Mars is your battleground. Thirdly we have the Vex. As far as I remember, we've got word that the Vex are found on Venus, the second closest planet to Earth. These enemies are faster, deadlier and trickier than The Fallen and the Cabal, making the challenge even more enticing and forcing players to grow stronger. More health, even more powerful weapons, and the ability to warp time, these robots from the future (or the past, no-one really knows) are tough sons-of-bitches and take a lot of skill to dispatch. Venus will train you from 40 to 60. Next we meet the Hive, a race we know very little about. It would be a good guess to assume that the Hive have strength in numbers, and will swarm you before you can react. A firm hand and good aim, along with a decent amount of skill, will be needed to survive each encounter, even with your badass weapons and upgrades. The sheer numbers of the Hive will create a whole new challenge, not just forcing you to shoot straight, but also to conserve your ammo, heal your teammates, and use your powers sparingly, as you never know when the next wave will hit. 60-80 is handled taking care of these strange creatures, on a destination we do not yet know. And finally, that mysterious, pyramid-ship flying race once thought to be known as the Glimmer. At level 80, your wits will be about you and you will have attained some of the best gear in the solar system, ready to take on this seemingly unstoppable force. Levels 80 to 100 will be handled in the far reaches of the solar system, desperately stopping this mystery race from getting close enough to Earth to finish us off for good. The best of the best will be needed to take them out. Hit level 100 and you'll be ready to take on their finest soldiers, in your most epic stand for humanity yet. But that's not to say you can't all get a piece of the action if you're not a high level. Got some friends who are level 70 and want to try out fighting the Hive for some epic loot to help against The Fallen? No problem. Just like MMOs and level-based, co-operative shooters, you can take on enemies that are much stronger than you. There's no guarantee you'll make it, but with a skilled hand and a can-do attitude, truly skilled players will be able to overcome their foes, no matter the level. But it'll be one hell of a struggle. So, Destiny fans and Bungie.net users, what do you think? Am I in the right ballpark, or is this all ludicriously proposterous warblegarble from a young Brit suffering from heat stroke?

  • Bungie said in the making of the e3 video, and In The mail sack, that it will be like borderlands in the sense that it will be the average roughly of the fire teams level in the public events at least. Then it will probably progress like you said for the main story

    • I hope its not like Borderlands where the enemies take 5 minutes of solid shooting to kill

      • Maybe it's the average in game level like if there is a level 3, 35 and 14 the game would get the firesquad average level, and go whatever the average is, to the highest player level so if the average is 30 and the highest level is 80 the enemy levels can vary between 30-80. That way all players get a fair share in challenge seeing that levels can vary well

      • Probably more like skyrim where you get stronger variations of each enemy type.

I don't care. This game is going to be good. That's all that matters.

Honestly, I think you've got it backwards. I think that it will be very similar to the difficulty in Borderlands in that all enemies will be within a few levels higher or lower than you at all times. That way it is the same difficulty for everyone. MoreConsole speculated that in public events, all enemies and all weapons of all of the guardians are somewhat balanced. So that everyone can help out equally. For example, if someone who is level 7 wanted to play against some Vex on Venus with his friend who is level 70, he could, while still being a reasonable force on the field. Update: Glimmer isn't a race. It is the currency. Like gold in other games. Also: Those flying pyramids (I believe) are the ships of the Vex. That part is entirely speculation, but it kindof makes sense. Bungie said that the Vex will play an important role in the campaign, and those ships could be similar to the Pillar of Autumn in Halo, where they are mostly just in cutscenes.

          • I believe enemies should progress with the level you are. This may be difficult if you are playing with a teammate that is a much lower or much higher level. Obviously lets say the Vex are much weaker than the Fallen the Fallen will always pose a tougher fight but never will any enemy be a walk over since they progress with you.

          • I don't like it for the lone reason that once your character hits the level threshold (say 20) there would be no reason to ever go back to Earth/fight the fallen again. Bungie has said they want to make it so it is rewarding to revisit areas you've already been to and this difficulty slider would, IMO, severely limit that. I'm going to guess there are easy to hard areas on every planet to keep us regularly returning to each planet in search of more info, harder enemies, and better loot.

            • This would be too restricting and would cut down on replay-ability. Let's not make any early assumptions. I'm pretty sure Bungie knows what they're doing.

            • It likely that hive control either mercury or Saturn both confirmed places, now with the fifth race I have to say they must control Jupiter, biggest planet in of solar system, most moons, heaviest gravitational pull, it would make sense that they are there. And based on the concept with the pyramid ships it does appear to Jupiter. Or even in unconfirmed places like Uranus or Neptune or 1 of the many dwarf planets in our solar system.

            • good idea, but we already saw united patrolls of fallen and Cabal. I think that it will have to do something with the place, but not with the race cause you see the diferent races offer totaly different typs of gameplay, while the hive seems to be just a horde of brainless zombies, you can take cover somewhere and they will just run into your shooting range, while the vex could be more strategy based. For example there could be easy zones like old russia, and those places around landing zones on other planets, and when you go away from landing zone it will get more difficult.

            • Admirable theory but I have to respectfully disagree with it. They are simply enemy types and their different traits distinguish them. They are there to provide different play experiences for the players. Sure we'll see more of a particular enemy type (like the Vex) on a certain planet than another enemy type but they are there to provide variety in gameplay.

Thanks for clearing some of that up. Good stuff! Will the loot drops be to the players level if one do decide to take on higher in-game levels, and is there a Need/want roll system for multiple fire teams in PubEve or does everyone get loot?

              • Maybe you'll have a difficulty slider like in Oblivion and you just tend to get matched with people who play the game at a similar difficulty.

              • It's been said, admirable theory, and the distances from earth detail fits well. However, I cannot fathom that after level 20 you'll never see the Fallen again, especially when they seem to be the closest to earth and the Wall.™ There may be certain areas that are "hard"areas, or the game gets harder as you level up, or enemies get buffs as you progress, or you get swarmed by more enemies, or you meet higher level enemies, etc etc etc. But more than likely as you progress, while new places will undoubtedly open up, you'll be able to return to all the old places and still be challenged.

                  • You're a genius. This system allows not only skilled players to always have places that are challenging, but allows them some down time against weaker enemies, and also allows noobs to try their hands against seemingly invincible alien hordes.

                  • I hope not. I hope enemies are difficult based on your own skill. Also, the demo had infinite ammo, low level enemies, and the first player was set to invincible.

                  • Don't like this idea. I don't want a certain species to be necessarily more difficult than other species just because Bungie built it like that. I want them to just be different. If I excel at gun vs. gun battles, then fighting the Fallen should be a piece of cake for me. But if I'm terrible at fighting charging enemies who melee, then the Hive should be difficult for me. If it seems confusing, then this is what I want -Enemies to be as difficult as their contradiction to the players playstyle. Rather then mechanically making one species undeniably harder than others.
