Factions? Perhaps more like guilds...

fac·tion /ˈfakSHən/ Noun 1. A small, organized, dissenting group within a larger one, esp. in politics. So at first glance the word 'faction' seems to fit very well for groups such as Dead Orbit, New Monarchy, etc. But what if the word faction is evoking the wrong speculation about their behavior? Most player factions exist in games that have ideology-vs-ideology pvp, like WoW or almost any other MMORPG. But I think Destiny 'factions' will be more like guilds. (and Destiny is not exactly an MMORPG) For example we have a theory (I forgot what hinted at it) that Dead Orbit makes ships. And the whole idea of Destiny is that [most of] humanity is behind the walls of the City. Cities that have deep divisions have a hard time holding together, so that rules out the conventional use of the word 'faction.' But if you look at the medieval fantasy roots of Destiny, 'guild' makes a lot more sense. Guilds are factions of daily life, they are simply a byproduct of centralized knowledge and the necessity of small monopolies in business. Plus guilds can work together, how would Dead Orbit make bad-ass ships if they couldn't arm them with FOTC weaponry? 'Faction' works in the sense of politics, but when you're on the battlefield against the Cabal you are all humans working towards survival, not bitterly opposed forces. guild /gild/ Noun 1. A medieval association of craftsmen or merchants, often having considerable power. 2. An association of people for mutual aid or the pursuit of a common goal. (yes I am aware of faction wars, but honestly we don't even know if that even means human factions, remember the Fallen are made up of "Houses" of Lords) EDIT: Turtler made a very good point, guild is not as 'sci-fi sounding' as faction.

  • I'm sure they considered calling them guilds, and perhaps using the word "guild" would be a more accurate term for them, but Bungie is trying hard to find the balance between fantasy and sci-fi, and you can see that in a lot of things they make. Tigerman is a good example of too much fantasy, and the original idea of living inside an alien space-sphere started to apply too much sci-fi. Avoiding the term "guilds" is a part of that entertaining balancing act

    • maybe there can be the both, factions and guilds. i think destiny breaks with the classical faction vs faction of MMOs (at least is the first one I don't identiify different political groups, from what I watch, such as the horde and alliance in WoW) maybe in the "city" there could be player-managed guilds, like in a normal MMO, offcourse built around destiny's mechanics, but also there could be minor conflicts spread accross the solar system, so each guardian could choose which side of the conflict he/she is picking. The keyword here is "minor" I think destiny's objective is not to develop hate between factions, but rather to make your guardian a legend of the solar system, who has traversed thousands of adventures and perils that people will remember from generation to generation, so this guardian must built up it's own destiny (lame word game :p) choosing a faction of these conflicts must not affect the guardian in a serious way, like in WoW, where you can't even talk with members of the other faction, these faction feuds could be limitated to a small region, for example, to factions of space pirates that disputes a moon of saturn, you must choose a faction, but the conflict is locked in that moon, while you are there, you hate players from the other faction, but maybe these pirates have hired you as a merc, so you are actually fighting for the money, not because you hate the other faction. When you go away from the moon, you don't need to fight the player from the other faction, just because you are not paid anymore. Here is an economical reason for choosing a faction, but there could a bunch of other reasons (ideological, racial,territorial, etc.) and the implications of choosing a faction could be different, in this example you only fight in the moon with the other faction (could be the excuse to make battlegrounds) but other factions would ban you to trading, fighting, etc. with members of the other factions, the possibilities could be endless. lastly, according to your definition of guild, the example of the pirates would be a guild, since they are pursuing a common goal, but from what I learnt in games, is that factions are rivals,(stromcloaks and the empire, alliance and horde, humans and locusts) they fight each other and have different ideologies and political structure, while guilds are not necesarly rivals, they could even be allies, like in eve online, where alliances are formed by several corporations, which are a group of people (what you might call guild in a game) so alliances are groups of groups.

      • im confused by this post. I think that you have been speculating too much. I think they are using the word faction appropriately. we will probably all be working together, but faction may just be a thing for matchmaking.

      • Pulling from the medieval fantasy ideas, a guild is more probable. I'm thinking if there are guilds, they might be groups of people with similar weapon choices. This would allow you to exchange ideas and tactics and possibly work together to help take back what was lost. But, who knows? We shall see.

      • This all makes sense, but we are only using the word Faction because it was used by Bungie. When the images started popping up of faction logos and they started selling shirts, the shirts were listed as faction shirts.

      • Interesting theory. We'll just have to wait and see what Bungie does with it, though. Hope we get some more information soon. ^_^;
