The Myth of the Bungie Community

Holy necro (posted on July 1st)! Um, I wasn't really planning on doing this anymore, but if enough people are interested I'll change that.
So this was an idea I had for something that might be fun and educational. I see I've turned off 80% of you. That's why there's a prize that requires very little effort. In Myth: The Fallen Lords, and Myth II: Soulblighter (Bungie's 90s entries into the RTS genre), you have the option to name your units individually. Should they survive a battle, the game will remember them, potentially carrying them all the way to the end of the game. This is part of one of the most unique things about the game; there's no "unit" building. Unlike many modern RTS's, there's really no way to win by sacrificing hundred's of low-level units to attrition. As some of you may or may have not seen, I've found a thing or two that suggests Destiny's high-level plot may have a lot of similarities with the high-level plot of Myth. I wanted to play through the game again so I'd be ready to notice anything else as we got closer, but then I thought, rather than find it myself again, it would be even cooler if there were a way to give everyone the tools to see it for themselves. So here's my idea for the contest: Participants will select a unit type from those available for a given mission. This has to be done mission-by-mission, as the game will automatically pull units from surviving units first.
Example "The Siege of Madrigal" starts with 8 Bowmen. the following level, "Homecoming," also starts with 8. If 6 Bowmen survive Madrigal, the game will move them into Homecoming and add two new Bowmen. If this were the case, I'd ask for two more people to sign up as Bowmen for Homecoming.
The person whose unit (alive or dead) has the most kills over the course of the two games (you'll select a new unit when Myth II starts) wins, and everyone who participates will be in the video of at least one level, which I'll post to Youtube. I'll also post a "highlights" vid for each battle, for those that just want to see if they survived or not. Everyone gets a fresh start (unit-wise; your points still carry over) when we get to Myth II. Q/A "But wait, won't you be able to influence who wins?" To an extent, but the influence will be more directly related to the abilities of the chosen unit. I promise not to walk anyone I don't like off a cliff. "How many people are we expecting to go through?" -I'll be playing on "Simple" difficulty, not because it's the highest difficulty I can beat, but because it's the highest difficulty I can minimalize casualties on. "Won't that make it too easy?" -If I were making use of the save feature, yes, I could easily finish most levels with no casualties. In order to add some randomness to it, every mission will be played straight through. This will also temper units like the Dwarves, which have large kill potentials but also high risk potentials (to suicide or ambushes). "Are some units more powerful than others?" Grossly. However, power often comes with a shorter life-span. For instance, a Journeyman (Medic) will never, ever win the contest, but they'll probably never die either, meaning they'll get a lot of screen time. Likewise the first Dwarf at Crow's Bridge has a high chance to win it all, but one miss-thrown bottle and he'll be done. "What about people using multiple accounts?" It really won't help them much in this; the goal is longevity. I'll use my discretion as to what accounts I allow to participate. Accounts that are known to have many alts will only be allowed to use one. Impersonators won't be allowed period. Prize Right now I've got a 2000MSP card I'm willing to give to the winner of the entire contest. As far as other prizes, I don't really have anything at the moment to give. Recognition will be given to leaders within unit classes, and if more prizes turn up later so be it. We'll see how this goes. I thought it might be a cool way for parts of the community that don't normally interact to get acquainted. If no one wants to do it I have no problems canceling it. I also have no problem modifying the contest in response to feedback as we progress, though I may put off major changes until the jump to Myth II. I'll run this off of three threads, this main thread in the community forum, a recruitment thread in the offtopic forum, and a video thread in the Bungie forum, which I'll link below when they're available. I expect to have the first battles up by this weekend. Guide To Units First of all, check out this link to get a general ideal of them. Your decision will revolve around this: Either choose a basic unit at the beginning of the game and hope they get a large amount of kills over the course of the game, or hold out for a more powerful unit and hope they can outscore the weaker units in the brief time they're up. If it helps your decision, I promise there will be no casualties in the first two battles. As such I'll be recruiting for the first three all at once. After that, it will be level by level. Also, there are some "hero" units later on. If we get that far, I'll find a way to select "forum celebrities" to take their role, but they (the units) won't be directly counted in the contest. Recruitment Thread: http://www.bungie.net/7_Flood-are-you-ready-to-die-for-your-forum/en-us/Forum/Post?id=60971134#referred-Offtopic Video Thread: [CURRENTLY UNNAVAILABLE]
The game's physics and the use of units that use what many today might call 'skill-shots' (duffs, archers, fetch) are built around the need for battlefield tactics. In addition, when you hover over the dark portions of the map (areas covered in the fog of war) you can hear enemy movements if the enemy is nearby--a prime element of most tactical games. In an RTS its all about resourcing, rushing, defending and countering. In Myth its all about tactics like a surprise attack from a wight creeping up out of a river (reminiscent of the many TFL matches I played on If I Had A Trow) or a small flank of 1 duff, 3 archers and 3 zerkers. No resourcing allowed Myth players to focus on cleaver tactics (keeping their units alive as long as possible).

    • Not everyday you see a mention of Myth on Bnext. I only know of the series retrospectively, but I'm sure it was awesome in its day, and I know a lot of Bungie staff, past and present, were forum mods and map makers in its day.
