Urban Warfare

Imagine this: your guardian is taking a stroll on the tower terrace, shopping for armor mods, and generally being at ease. Suddenly a HUD alert appears, and a near by PA screen shows a mo-cap city official announcing that a pre-collapse ship had just bypassed the Traveler's shields and crash landed in a residential area near the outer wall. The official orders all available guardians to investigate and help with search and rescue. You hop into a rapid transit pod and arrive on site moments later. Rather than a disaster site, what you find is more akin to a battleground: the ship (seen as a smoldering behemoth in the background) was actually one of the derelict ships from Saturn, commandeered by the hive for use as a shock pod. Hive drones are everywhere, massacring civilians and fighting security droids/mechs/bots/whatever-you-want-to-call-em. It is up to you and the other players to contain the situation and stop the hive from gaining a foot hold in the city. Could this be an example of a public event? Will we ever have to defend the city directly? Will urban combat be at all present? I think this would be an excellent sort of major event type thing, the like of which would only occur once ore twice a year, and take days to compleat as a community.

  • Yes! I would definitely accept this major public event alert or notification. Just imagine all the guardians available in that area meet up and plan an assault to drive back the hive and presumably the fallen. It would just be an time of excitement and this type of large scale community stuff would definitely attract and make the game destiny addictive. I hope bungie do make this idea and put it into the game or anything close however they would have to restrict the amount of players or do it on several severs or it would be crowded and no fun at all. This is the type of immersive multiplayer action I am wishing and expecting from bungie to use in destiny? Bungie could also develop and make changes to this type of event over the 10 years they said they would keep on adding after destiny's release. It just can't wait for this game it is gonna be soooooo good.

    • I wish anything in Destiny was as remotely as interesting as this post. It fails to make me care of what could be an epic new universe to explore. Every single mission in the campaign except the sword of Croata was exactly the same and the story was awful, with 0 plot and horrible dialogue. There are a total of 5 different public events, one being exclusive to Venus. Just try harder Bungie and implement good ideas like this one compared to the crap you put out there for PvE grinding. At least the VoG is fun, still no context however.

    • Sounds like a great idea, it would be very interesting to be caught of guard in a once-or-twice-a-year kind of battle experience. Also, you could say to your friends were you in that massive struggle to stop the final city on earth falling last night? :)

    • Harkening back to the GDC presentation, I believe the city will fall. During the Q&A, Joseph Staten answers a question about the game reaching beyond our solar system (like galaxy wide) saying that they (him and Christopher Barret) could not discuss that at the time with huge smiles on their faces. I believe that at some point (not saying the end of this first game) that the earth will fall and what survivors are left will have to find somewhere else to colonize and there will be new enemies or the survivors will search and find new tech on other alien worlds to use in a return to earth and wipe out the enemies of earth. If the city were to stay intact and not fall what would be the point of the game eventually taking us past our own solar system. I know the explorable areas in Destiny are going to be huge, but I also see running out of things to do and explore and fighting the same enemies over and over for 10+ years will get old.

This is one of the best things i have ever heard! If bungie does do it, however, they should also update there mobile app to automatically place your character in a chat feed that includes all other players in the event. Coordinating and assault with hand gestures would be frustrating and time consuming. A small map should be available were people submit war plans on the map and then they are votes on. The person who's war plan is chosen is then picked as the defacto commander for the event, helping to coordinate the offensive and marking enemy positions, until or unless he is voted out and the next person is chosen to lead for a time. This map should also show player types and weapons, so, for example, the snipers could be brought together and sent to a roof top to help support the vanguard by taking out opposing enemy snipers or just enemies that are to weak to do much harm, but are still slowing the main offensive down. The key to this battle would be communication, so an audio function on the app(they should also put this on pc, not everyone has a smart phone). Also, there was a piece of concept art from a while back that showed an AI in the city with a sniper rifle. This leads me to believe, that if not enough guardians show up, or were getting our arses kicked spectacularly, the number of "police" AI can increase, or some other subtle event can occur to bring the attack back into control. Thats just my two cents; what do you think?

      • I would really enjoy this. Lets say we lose, the hive (or any other faction really. I'd expect the fallen to break through) get a foothold and slowly start taking over the city. Players would be grouping together to go and oust them from the city, just like the actual military. They regroup then go back and counter attack. It would really help the immersion, which bungie has stated is one of their main goals. I like it, I want it. Only thing that needs to be sorted out is the possibility, however small, that not enough players respond in time and lets say they win and take over the city. Bungie has said that public events are not mandatory, but if people take advantage of that and not enough people show up to defend the city, the enemy take a portion of it. In order to persuade the ones who don't like public events (but are capable of joining. Those with crap Internet, I understand), ALL players would lose the benefits from that portion of the city, including any favorite shops or quest continuations. Let me know what you think guys. Mostly about the losing benefits of that part of the city.

        • HELL YES!!! I would respond to this alert instantly. Not only that but I would call every able-bodied Guardian that I could into it as well. As one, all guardians would assemble and defend Last City with everything that we were made of. NOTHING could hold back our might, not a Hive attack, not a flotilla of Fallen ships or a Legion of Cabal. When every Guardian of Last City is united under one goal, there is nothing that we can't accomplish.

        • Awesome...I would like to see some kind of special events where an outpost is under siege or the main city comes under full scale assault once a month or something...something like that would keep people encouraged to stay interested in the game...in WoW and other MMO's even the main (safe) cities would come under attack by enemy players (may not be possible in Destiny) and enemy NPC troops. Varied and exciting events that actually affect things in the game will be what keeps people interested.

        • Love that idea, like others are saying, it may not be viable for the main city as it's protected by the traveller but what if you could storm major enemy cities or derelict cities, take control and rebuild with civilians moving in, setting up shop etc, these could then become the main targets for enemy recapture! If the attack was large enough that we lost control of the city and all the civilians moved out it wouldn't be the end of the game but the larger community could plan to combine efforts to attempt to recapture it again. This could give major benefits in locations in the game for things like supplies, upgrades etc plus be an ongoing (in varying waves of difficulty) mission to protect the expanding/contracting control zone.

        • This is an incredible idea. Would just suck if it got out of hand and certain areas of the coty became over-run or something. It is the last SAFE city, after all.

          • It'd be a great way to make online friends too. Imagine getting isolated in back alleys with one other Guardian and doing a commando style op and sabotaging their spawn/entrance point, or just fighting a good while together making your back to the main group. But urban warfare has always been fun for me, especially when you have freedom of route and a large map to play on.

          • I would like that very much. It would also be cool if on an uncommon basis, normal safe areas would be invaded by the enemy in a public event like described above, and formidable enemies would appear. If they could balance the difficulty so that around 50% of the time you will either repel them, or get rocked, it would add a palpable sense of fear in the back of your mind whenever you're in a "safe" area. They could also make it so that people in the safe area can "flee" the attack, while those who want to stay and fight can buy them time, at great risk to themselves.
