Why did Bungie decide to retire this element? I thought it really added to bungie.old and wish they had kept it.

While I understand your point, it was many times (from my personal perspective) a distraction and a disruption. A ninja would post and within the replies that their post generated, there was always a significant fraction of people who accused the members who replied of "sucking up" and "you're only replying because of the ninja". Now that the ninja are not "play nice police" and our duties are focused on the human review of member-submitted reports, the lack of colored text (to me) reflects that we are members of this community and not any "more special" than any other member who has been here for a while and built up relationships, history and an online persona. It's rare that a ninja posts in an "official capacity" and while it might be nice to show a color when we do, it's not that vital. I personally like the current setup. I post when/where I choose to, in topics that interest me, and (just like any member) will get respect from others based on how I act here on the forums.

We actually requested the ability on Bungie.old to be able to switch from "official" to "unofficial" posts because we are, above everything else, members of the Bungie.net Community. It would suck when we'd enter into a thread and people wouldn't post like themselves, or the conversation would either just die or become what I said. I'm glad it's gone.

I think it would be good if they were able to switch their color for official posts. Also if the Septagon shield turned gold when they answered a question in normal threads. I know DeeJ does this for threads he makes but I'm talking about doing this for normal member threads when an official post is made in that thread.
