Public Events - What they are & what they could be...

If Bungie gave you the tools and freedom to create your own Public Event, what would you create?[/b][/quote] When Bungie revealed the first Public Event in the E3 gameplay demo, I was honestly not that impressed. I have played Defiance and a couple other large scale MP games, and I gotta say that it was not a lasting enjoyable time for me. To have random people run up and shoot some monster with me just felt weird. Heck, in Defiance they had leaderboard after each event, so every person that came in seemed to either distract me or steal the show. It was quite aggravating and I eventually avoided the events altogether. So when Destiny showed off a group of random players taking down a Spider Tank, I wasn't all that excited. I would have rather seen more UI or menus, or maybe a few snid-bits of competitive play. However, then I read a few articles detailing what Bungie wants to do with Public Events and I had an interesting thought: [i][b]Bungie makes games they want to play[/b][/i] As far as I'm concerned, fighting a Spider Tank would be fun a few times but would quickly get old. AND BUNGIE KNOWS THIS. My mind started wandering, thinking of all the incredibly fun Public Events they probably have planned. I mean, we're talking about a developer that turned a hammer and a skull into a digital sport! Public Events in Destiny could literally be anything they wanted: dodge ball with Space Magic, vehicle races, smaller version of Firefight where last Guardian surviving wins, there is no limit! And then another thought came to mind. Bungie has always given the community tools and freedom to design their own maps and gametypes. When they say that Destiny will become something they don't control, what if it means they will give us a chance to build these Public Events from the ground up??? What if I create a map and gametype for my own very of World of (Spider) Tanks and it sporadically shows up in the world for people to participate in? [u]Imagine walking into a public area and suddenly be given the option to try out some community member's new creation![/u] Sure they could suck, but the very idea is simply incredible! Okay, this has been way too long for a simple point. [i]From here on out, please share some ideas of what you would create in this new universe! Share some of your awesome Halo game ideas if you think they apply! What would you love to randomly run into in a public area?[/i]

  • I think of an event where the Cabal are attempting to destroy glimmer drills (owned by the city) Via explosive charges. You will have to defend the drill until glimmer extraction is completed OR: Cabal Convoys are transporting stolen Vex Technology and you must kill off the 3 majors (not as powerful as the target kill missions) before they get to an extraction point. [spoiler]the convoy can still be stopped when they arrive at the extraction point, you will have about 1 minute until the drop ship arrives to destroy the convoy.[/spoiler]

    I'd like to see some sort of random dungeons open up. Maybe like a sinkhole or something similar opens up and a flood of Hive pour out. Players have to work together to kill as many as possible and fight their way deeper into the abyss. Along the way players receive loot. The deeper the players get, the closer they get to the epicenter of the enemies, and the more difficult the enemies become. Players are collecting loot along the way, and as they progress the loot gets better. A player only gets one life in the event and can't be revived by other guardians (or maybe only a limited number of revivals can happen during the event). I think this sort of model would really encourage teamwork and community building. Imagine fighting for an hour alongside random strangers and at the end finding some wicked awesome loot, and reveling in your victory with the players that just helped you earn that gear. I haven't decided if it should be a more "endless" type event where there's no way you'll defeat all the enemies and you just go till you're all dead, or instead if there's some sort of "superloot" at the very end which players can achieve only if they fight with amazing teamwork and combat skills. Either way sounds cool. What do you guys think? Man this topic got me excited. Now I'm pumped to see some other ideas. Great thread, OP.

      • So public events aren't always random, they need to have public stadium battles, pvp and non pvp. The public stadiums will always be in the same spot on each planet, holding different game modes every day. Another good one is a public race event with a track made for racing npc and pvp and solo for time challenge.

        • Fight hordes, chance to board fallen, cabal, etc. ships with more than just 1 fireteam. Devil walker attacks, Hive infestations, enemy attacks on the city, and raiding enemy bases would all be cool.

        • Public star gazing events. Called it. See you guys on Venus. That orrrrr enemy mother ships enter orbit and we get to fly our planes in space and dog fight while other get to invade the ship on foot. Beating the public event make them leave. Losing means they establish a stronghold on some area of that planet.

          • Defiance ark fall / public event system is so terrible though, I wouldn't even compare the two. The idea to make your own with creativity sounds like fun however, in the coming months I hope Bungie reveals more.

            • They've said there will be public events that are more than just killing a big monster. Some are even going to have multiple parts.

            • They give you the option to not participate in those. And I highly doubt that they will NOT give single player players a boss fight for themselves.

            • Love to see a public event were players would need to respond to a wall breach.....of course that would involve a lot of bad guys. .

                • I'm on board. I love forging in Halo so If I get the chance to be a part of the world building process in Destiny, so much the better. Although, I don't think community content would be in the Public Event realm. It would probably be some kind of simulation thing you access from the city, or an arena you travel out to. Maybe THE best ones would be incorporated into the larger game as a part of the public events and assigned loot/rewards by Bungie. THAT would be cool. if you could script AI and objectives, I would really love to see that. I would also really love the ability to mix and match objectives within a single map. Hold off the enemy waves while you Defend Alpha, Capture Bravo, Escort Charlie, and Destroy Delta. I really liked Invasion in Halo: Reach. This seems really complex though when you start to add in the AI element and player placed terrain. I guess that if anyone can pull it off, though, it would be Bungie.

                  • Actually, I believe it was Rooster Teeth that turned a hammer and skull into a sport. They called it Grifball, after one of their Red vs Blue characters. Either way, I'd love to create a Public Event. I'd have Cabal and Fallen fight each other, with Guardians in the middle.

                  • A Public Event that I could create. Hmm. A Mad Max styled vehicle showdown across a huge stretch of open world terrain. If we have a possibility of setting destinations for NPC characters (if we can even make Public Events) I would set the Event to start in one area and simply roll through a vast portion of the map. Lots of fast vehicles, and if the enemies make it to their destination, consider the event failed. Have other small groups of enemies join the fray as the chase goes on longer just so players don't possibly wreck everything from the get-go.

                  • I support this topic with one exception. I don't like the idea of wandering through the lands hunting down Fallen that are on our planet and suddenly being notified that "hey some guy made a custom event, wanna try it out?" If there is some kind of workshop where people can upload their creations or perhaps an area in the city to try them out I think that would be cool. [b]On a side note:[/b] They stated that the destruction cause by the Public Event was playable Geometry. I really want to know how that is going to work. Will it take time for the object to be rebuilt? Will there be some sort of job system to rebuild them for extra In-game currency?

                  • This wouldn't work just showing up to a public event you would have to load up a map then it might work but then they couldn't put every map on it so it might if it does existoonly playable by your group and there could be a way for you to make your map available like file share and I doubt bungie would add a map to their list of maps unless it was perfect and made sense

                  • One those giant Cabal centurion things riding a spider tank thing like a rodeo. :3 Well not literally (actually that would be awesome if it did literally happen) but it would be pretty cool to come in while two other groups of enemies are fighting large scale. Imagine infiltrating a Cabal stronghold in Mars and you see Fallen ships on an assault against the stronghold.

                  • nice idea!! although if you are not happy to join public event with suddenly 10 people, let's try defeat a spider with 3 person, my only thought of it is, I can't do it, no offense, just imagine....
