Can we get a Enemy that isn't Humanoid?

It seems all we are fighting is humanoids. The Cabal, Fallen, Vex, and even the Hive are humanoid. Heck even the Covenant except save the Engineers were pretty much Humanoid. Where's all the multiple limb crawling or floating horrors that know how to use weapons at in this Scifi/Fantasy opus?

  • Humanoid just happens to be a common trait, that being the ability to have two limbs free to hold or manipulate while moving.

I guess the thing Bungie is getting at is that any sufficiently advanced intelligent species would probably resemble what we call a humanoid form. Think of it as universal convergent evolution, any species which utilizes intelligence as an evolutionary trait would evolve in such a way as to free up it's hands so as to better manipulate the world around itself increasing the chance for the species to prosper, grow and reproduce. I'm sure the Fallen have probably domesticated certain other species they have discovered during their journey through the universe and perhaps we may see them. Now they (The Fallen) haven't advanced so far as to exist in a purely ethereal form which interacts with the universe purely through will, but perhaps that's what the Traveller is, perhaps it's the key to the next stage in intelligent life. The Traveller reminds me of the Monolith from 2001 a space odyssey. I reckon it predates all species in the universe by 100s of millions of years. So perhaps the species who created it have gone beyond a solely humanoid form.

    • Non bipedal enemies would be cool... But I don't think they'll add that. Although they may add bears with machine guns for feet. Or squids that shoot chainsaws out their butts.

    • I wish we had a player character that wasn't "humanoid", by which I mean a pallet-swapped human.

    • Just a little something to consider that I didn't see anywhere down there, there's a lot of talk about the humanoid form being best because it allows a major differentiation for limbs, thus an exclusivity of movement or tools/interaction. So take a look at the Octopus, yes it uses all limbs to crawl at times but they are also highly tactile and useful for manipulating tools. -Main difference between this organic form and ours? We exist in an area of a planet that's hospitable for the development of technology and can safely manipulate it without detriment to our person or the technology (could be a twig or a circuit board). We just so happen to live on a planet with an atmosphere extremely hospitable for the exploration of science. This could play a role in determining the evolution of intelligence.

    • Bipedalism is the most energy efficient for speed and long distance travel. Walking upright allows for freedom of hands to use tools, and the abilities to live healthy enough lives to evolve a large brain. Humanoid form is the best in biological terms

    • Having humanoid enemies allows the animation team to quickly create realistic animation sequences via motion capture of a human body. Though I suppose it could be used on animals...that would be interesting. Otherwise, animations require frame by frame construction.

    • I heard something about Planet Crushing War Beast in this game. So there will most likely be creautures that aren't humanoid that we face. also vex are machines aren't they?

      • The races we know may not be all of the races actually in game. Like DuskToDawn said, there can be wildlife roaming around. Which I highly anticipate there will be.

        • They are probably just the super intelligent species that we are fighting. I'm sure it will be like skyrim where there is lots of hostile wildlife hanging out on the planets as well

          • Remember, there are (at least) five different enemy races, and Bungie is still playing things pretty close to the vest as far as enemy types and combat intricacies. Also, in the E3 gameplay demo when Joe finally manages to get a headshot on a Fallen on the lagged out PS4, the message above reads, "Critical" NOT "Headshot" which basically confirms there is going to be some kind of differentiation between anatomy of enemies. Plus, this game is designed to be progressive, over years. This first "book" may be confined to 5 different, humanoid-ISH races, but if almost guarantee after a couple years all kinds of insane enemy types are going to be dreamt up. Can't wait for this!

            • Simplicity sake. SPECULATION AHEAD animating something with multiple legs is more-a-less a more manageable thing now-a-days but I assume it's still a bit...uh, tedious. It can even be buggy on very uneven terrain. To the point that multiple legs can glitch and spazz about merely because the mechanics in the animation cannot decide where to put the leg. Most of the times I see this though it does result, but breaks the "immersion" of things. Another thing could be, in terms of any type of body form, designing technology for said species. You'd have to think into their evolution, and how they'd build things to accommodate them. While this merely takes time and imagination you then run into a problem. Humanoid characters, the which that you'll be playing, cannot utilize these vehicles. I think that's why Bungie decides to not use non-humanoids, or at least not a notable amount of them. The ability to run about and use the enemies toys against them in an ever so gleeful fashion is rendered moot and void in the face of machinery that, for you to operate, would require you to spawn limbs or be a contortionist to fit in.

                  • IMO I think that having a humanoid enemy makes it somewhat relatable to us as players. Non-humanoids are more difficult to relate to as you'd need to understand more about their physiology and culture to truly appreciate blowing its head off... And indeed, if you were to shoot where we were to perceive the head to be it may not be a headshot... May even be a groin shot... We just don't know unless we were taken by the hand and lead through a lecture about how to lay the smack down on non-humanoids... Boring... Give me something to shoot
