Why have we not infiltrated the Traveler?

Everything we have heard so far plays off the fact that humanity knows next to nothing about the mysterious sphere that protects our City. Just what is the Traveler? My question is, why haven't we tried to find answers? Last time I checked, we're a nosy race of human beings. We obviously have spacecraft, so what's keeping us from flying into the Traveler's interior? Shields? Automatic defenses? Some sort of repulsive magnetic field? This question has been eating away at me for a while, so I wanted to see what you all think!

  • We don't know whether or not they've done that yet. It would kinda suck if bungie revealed all that yet. However, since warlocks can wield the traveler's technology/powers, and it has been said all guardians are gifted with its power, you can make the assumption we've been there. On another note, it says warlocks also have studied the traveler, so it would suck if you had to use binoculars as your only tool of study. Heck, we'll probably be able to explore it.

  • My question is why does the traveler look so far out in that picture? Isn't it supposed to be literally hovering over the city? If so, why isn't it in-game?

    • Doesn't the fact that Warlocks are described as having long been studying the traveler imply that humanity is actively researching it? Hell, warlocks can even use it's "magic" frequently.

We didn't because the Traveler isn't over one of our cities. It is, however, over the Last City. And those humans didn't because the skinwalkers will kill them if they do.

If there was a giant orb floating over my city by some unknown mechanism that if messed with could fall and crush the last remnants of my species, I'd be hesitant to climb in and do random things to it also.

          • I am going to go with the idea (until shown otherwise) that we have gone into the Traveler. I think this is how the learning about and gaining some of its powers thing has worked. I am assuming that the Travelers tech is simply so far beyond us that we can only manage very small inroads into using some of that power to benefit ourselves. We probably have the "best and brightest" working on unlocking some more of the Travelers secrets but I would guess that progress is slow because they must be careful to not damage anything or inadvertently cause a disaster. On top of that if the tech really is that advanced then the pace would be slowed to an incremental crawl. Think of it this way. Take your smartphone back in time 100 years. Now imagine how long it would take humans back then to figure out its function and operation. Remember, they have to do this with no idea of what it is and no basis for figuring that out. Also keep in mind that they do not have access to the networks that this device relies upon in order to function fully. Now to recreate this technology (make it useful for the masses) they would need to build the manufacturing capability from scratch. Hell worse than that they would have to learn the science and math from scratch. Even then they would have to work hard to build the machines that are capable of building the machines that can make this particular device. We didn't just come up with the smartphone overnight, it took a long time to get that level of tech. I believe we have a similar problem with the traveler. We might be working feverishly to understand it but we are coming from a place that is so far behind that level of technology we just have no basis for comparison. We have to learn and then build it all from scratch, while doing nothing that risks damaging the one thing that is keeping us all safe. Well that is my basic idea about it all, I may be wrong but for now it makes sense.

            • I'm willing to bet that we have tried finding answers, just we haven't been met with much success. Assuming we aren't bent on taking apart, cutting into or peeling apart the very thing that saved humanity that still leaves the open areas to explore into. It's possible there's some manner of barrier, some of the artwork has depicted the Traveler hovering over the city with the clouds pushed back in a radius around it. Personally I'm thinking we might have made small probes into it in an attempt to study it, commune with it or worship it (Cause lawlhumanity) in some manner. The fruits of such actions come in the manner of the warlocks, gifted in some manner by the Traveler with those crazy arcane powers. Being "gifted by the traveler" might be a bit less literal with it being more of a "gift" we got ourselves by poking and prodding it. Or maybe our new lord and master literally bequeathed some mortals with magic.

            • Maybe there is a forcefield that prevents people from coming near, so humans settled under it to have protection from the air, and guardians defend from the ground. It has also been stated that humans only just got back in the space flight game, so that may be part of the story.

                • Why would you do that? That's so rude. What do you expect would happen? Guardian goes inside and see the AI/alien/computer/Tiger Man/etc inside the Traveler. Traveler: "What are you doing in here?!" Starts to freak out violently. Human: "Sorry! I was just wondering if you wanted tea and biscuits!" Runs away. Traveler: "The idiot doesn't realise that's supposed to be saved for the story-mode." TL;DR: It's being saved for the campaign and it's not that long.
