Cry more: or why Microsoft understands what gamers won't
BREAKING!!!!! Kind of. It was just a bunch of gimmicks, with no games, and there's no reason to expand multimedia capabilities. Let's see what's happening here. The Xbox 360, has already become as much a home entertainment device as a gaming device. Meanwhile, 84% of tablet owners are using them primarily to play games, compared to 51% who are consuming music and video. The numbers are clear: the traditional "game console" does not exist. Just ask Sony, which is putting off remote play, Vita streaming, and legacy game downloads and instead offering day-one support for Netflix, Amazon Video, and its own Music and Video Unlimited services. The best part is that gaming hasn't gone anywhere... unless you think it's unusual for games to be announced at Electronic Entertainment Expo. Okay, fine. Let's just say that there is a market out there besides the traditional gamer. Reaction to the Xbox One reveal has still been completely terrible! From Gamespot polls to IGN polls, what's clear is that the XB1 reveal was a complete dud. Well, I decided to venture out of my gamer-cave and see what the rest of the world was doing. I do this once every week anyway, and it gives me time to shower and grab some packs of Mountain Dew. Really though, what does the mainstream media think about the reveal?
Microsoft has done what Apple has long been rumored to do. It has created a near-perfect living room machine, one that has the potential to finally make it simple for you to watch or play anything you want, from anywhere, very quickly... The One isn’t perfect, but it might be the closest thing we’ve seen, so far, to the living-room computer of our dreams... Sony’s device looks far less intuitive than Microsoft’s. To bolster that position, Microsoft has also announced key content partnerships with the NFL and Steven Spielberg... That’s not to say that Microsoft has neglected its gaming features. And they might have a point. Hyping the Xbox One's ability to be an "all-in-one entertainment system," Microsoft showed off a console that is capable of seamlessly flipping between the multimedia in your life... ...In the demo showcased by Don Mattrick, Microsoft’s president of Interactive Entertainment Business, the speed at which the console was able to make these changes was met with audible gasps from the audience.

"The battle for consumers' time has shifted radically to multimedia entertainment," said veteran video game analyst P.J. McNealy, chief executive of Digital World Research. "So you have to have a connected device that allows you to watch TV, that allows you to watch movies, to listen to music, to communicate with friends, to play games." In many ways, the Xbox One represents a natural evolution for a game console that increasingly is being used to deliver a broad spectrum of entertainment in the home.
Some more: 1, 2, 3, 4 The Xbox reveal was a success because it sent the right message to the right people. Gamers don't care about live TV, and they don't have to. Microsoft has E3 to coddle their followers. But mainstream media loves the partnerships with the NFL and Steven Spielberg, the intuitive nature of Kinect control, and the console's ability to seamlessly integrate TV and gaming/multimedia into one box. There are comparisons to Apple, and TV networks that should be "worried". There are industry analysts talking about how mobile/social gaming is the next big thing, and that it makes sense to rope in those people. CNBC even called the all-in-one media hub the "holy grail". But what about gaming? Look, gaming is still around, and I would argue that it's better than ever. From specs to cloud integration, the Xbox One has everything it needs to do everything well. What we saw on the 21st was a device that's truly capable of being a full entertainment machine: seamless switching between TV and gaming, easy voice navigation, cloud capabilities, apps, and services. And the purpose of this post is to show that multimedia is something that the Xbox One needs too-- not more than gaming, not instead of gaming. Just with gaming. Before I let you go, let's get real for a second. I know I've been playing a lot of defense for the Xbox One lately, but it's not because I hate the PS4. Actually, I think it has some mind-blowing features. It's just that, looking at the hate in forums and websites and everything, there are people who aren't saying "hey, I this isn't my cup of tea". They're saying "omg reveal was epic fail" or "lol nobody cares about [x]"... but that's not really true. And it's not constructive. That's what I'm aiming at here.

    • Very good post, OP. Well informed, well written. I'll like it as often as I'm allowed. There needs to be more truth on this subject because the Gods know that all of the entitled, PoS 4 clones are shoveling more misinformation than they even know about the system.

      • I've been saying this from the start. Microsoft knows who their targeting, and they didn't start with the Xbox One. They were trying to be the all-in-one living room device since the 360, and they were pretty good at it back then.

      • *cracks neck* watch theeeeesa Ps4 400$ xbox Juan 500$ Majority people want to game in their gaming console and watch tv on there tv. Resulting in no reason to buy x1 only if you want these add ons. Like what I've once said before, if you want a phone to just call then buy a phone. Why would you pay extra on a smart phone when all you want to do is make calls? (this is just an example this doesn't mean phone vs smart phone because obviously a smart phone is better)

          • I respect your effort in creating this topic. I do not respect Microsoft after being wishy-washy and changing their DRM stance. I was fine with it. I am glad people can play their games offline because they live in areas that don't provide proper connection. I just don't like when people or companies all of sudden change their stance. I prefer a stick to your guns approach. Wishy-washy people are the worst.

              • The only problem is that all those features are US only. So all those things don't count where I live. If I buy an Xbox one I get a black box with a kinect that I won't and can't use because my language is probably not supported and I don't have any of that extra stuff. So in the end I am paying extra for something i will never use. On top of that it checks if i'm online every 24 hours and has used game fees.

                • I absolutely refuse to believe that the amount of money spent on games is decreasing. It was to be some loaded research experiment where they did like amount spent on games per like 100,000 xboxes and then like each year they go up in the number (amount spent on games per 200,000 xboxes). I want so badly to believe that this is all just the research found by Microsoft to trick us into spending more.

The Xbox One will do poorly at launch, not because it is a bad product but because: - Alienated 'launch' buyers (see: Core crowd) - Families won't see the point in purchasing a new console after just buying a $120-150 addon to their Xbox - MS thinks families WILL pay ~~$500, they won't. - No Halo on launch - Kinect 2 isn't innovative - Stagnant wages all over the west - Very few, if any, good points over the PS4 for non-Americans The Xbox 'One' will sell only slightly better than the Wii-U is now. You may disagree with me, but the simple fact is that I am right and I will be proved right; if I'm not you can message me after Christmas and I'll donate $20 to a charity of someone's choice. The far more interesting thing is what happens to the PS4, it's highly possible we'll see that fail as well although it's definitely a more steady, sturdy choice with very little diversification for the console, they're essentially hitting the same market that the PS3 went for. The 'Xbox One' will not do what the Wii did, anybody claiming or even thinking that it will is a -blam!-ing moron. The Wii did well because it was innovative, cheap and Nintendo (thus hitting much of the core crowd, the family crowd and the budget crowd); the 'Xbox One' is not innovative, it is not cheap and it 'is' Microsoft. P.s. This isn't even a games console, it's an entertainment box; it's aimed squarely at Google and Apple rather than Sony. I find it amusing that 'gamers' even care about it for the games now.

                    • Said perfectly. E3 will be the XB1 reveal for gamers, I've said that since the reveal. They needed to reach a broader demographic in order to hit all the points and new features on the XB1, for the right people. Xbox's ability to please a wide demographic of people, gamers included, is why it outsold Sony last generation, and why it'll do the same this generation. Its all about features features features, and at the end of the day regardless of what a gamer may or may not need feature wise, Xbox has our backs, and Xbox prevails.

                    • What PS4 fanboys fail to understand is that the Xbox One reveal was a console reveal, not a games reveal. The games it revealed showed what the console was capable of, but this is one way Microsoft is selling it as an entertainment system, not just a gamingsystem. Microsoft is now in a position where it can steal the show at E3 this year. Sony have revealed a lot of their new games. Microsoft haven't. They're biding their time. E3 is just around the corner, and they'll reveal tonnes of games and new material, and most of it will be brand new (unlike Sony, who've fired all their ammo already). Sony made a very clever marketing move. It's placed itself in a very good position. The whole "reveal" of the PS4 was a joke. "Hey, we're revealing our new console! We're not actually revealing our new console!". This card was dealt because they knew Microsoft would (actually) reveal their console soon and it would double time it because of the PS4 reveal. But do you see the trick? Occam's razor says that the reason they didn't reveal the console is because they simply hadn't finished it yet, so they jumped the gun, causing Microsoft to speedily reveal their console. Sony can now make last minute adjustments to their new console and they can still say that they revealed it first. They bet that Microsoft would do better than Sony by actually revealing the console, but it's all a gamble that's paid off. The trick fails the closer you get to E3. Sony had no console to show off. How to fill the time? Games. And lots of them. So what's left for E3, the number one destination for new games reveals? Very little, if anything. Microsoft has played it safe by waiting until E3. It'll have loads of fresh material and completely steal the show. tl;dr: Both companies have planned ahead of eachother, and have put themselves in good positions. This will be a very interesting E3.

                      • Wow, is it just me or is Microsoft going full out on PR damage control? Gaming is shit now. I haven't had any incentive to play my 360 in a long time and the Xbox One is going down that same path. I'm not made of money, I'm not spending $500 a year so I can have Xbox Live Gold, Skype, cable, Netflix, NFL whatever, and used games.

                      • Gaming has changed because hard core gamers can't find any games they actually like anymore. Thats why instead of getting on Xbox to play games, we just get on Netflix. The gaming industry lacks the life it used to have because there are no good titles right now. People are generally pretty tired of CoD, and I don't think I have to talk about Halo.

I honestly am stuck with the xbone. I can understand the reasoning behind the features. And the used game plan. But why the kinect cant be turned off is beyond me. You cant cover it up. Its just a major reason i may not buy the xbone in the first place.

Well, I think the problem is that focusing on entertainment is pretty much pointless because there are other entertainment boxes that are much less expensive. "But!", you say. "We don't know the price of it yet!" Well, unless it sells for less than $150, as an entertainment box, it would be way too expensive, as the absolute minimum would be $350, and that's stretching it. Factor in XBL Gold, needed for most entertainment features, and you're better off with a Apple TV or a Roku box.

To tack onto the OP, another point I'd like to raise is that MS's presentation focused equally on multimedia and gaming. Sorry if you don't like EA Sports games or Call of Duty, but somebody does: 4 of the 5 most-played games on Xbox Live are CoD or EA Sports Games. It makes complete sense that Microsoft would highlight these games along with the new console's multimedia capabilities.

                        • Yeah but most of the people that use 360 as an entertaiment device didn't buy it at 350$. Having a box that can do almost everything is fine, but at the beggining of the cycle is games what matter most. Nobody, except for the hardcore, are going to spend 400$ on a console to watch TV. That's why i think microsoft totally messed up, Apple TV and Google TV have been a total failure, i don't know why Microsoft is trying to replicate that. Maybe in 3 years when the console price comes down, it will the time to focus on things that attracs the general public.
