The Dark Army: Clues & Theories, Pt. 1

For additional theory updates, check out part 2. Yo peeps! I've been doing some thinking in regards to the "dark army", and I hope my ideas will spark more ideas from the beautiful 7th Column community (das you!). Early after Bungie's establishment of the Destiny setting, they embarked on the task of enemy design. Chris Barret, the art director, drew up this enemy "Moodboard" to spark those ideas. Remember it? If you haven't watched their presentation at the GDC Conference, do it!! Notice there were 5 initial concepts for enemies. The first 4 have developed into the Vex, the Fallen, the Cabal, and the Hive. They didn't drop the 5th race, they simply haven't talked about it. They said they weren't allowed to yet. The secrecy they have held in regards to the 5th Race tell me they play a big role in the story. Here's what we know: At the GDC Conference, Joe Staten said the following:
"Imagine you're exploring an abandoned moon-base, and you start to notice fissures in the ground, that are flickering with strange lights and seeping gases. And then imagine following one of these fissures and coming upin a giant alien 'hell-mouth' cracking the lunar surface. And then imagine taking a trecherous path that leads you even deeper, into the heart of a hidden fortress, where a dark army dreams of conquest and corruption....But I'm..not allowed to talk about that yet."
These are the images he showed during that point of the presentation: Moonbase, w/ emphasis on moon damage. Hellmouth. Heart of the fortress. Now I'd like to take you back a moment and remember what was said in the initial reveal.
"Something hit us...knocked us down and tried to stamp us out. Nobody knows exactly what..."
Now see how the narrarator continues. This is very important:
"And now we've begun to venture back into the wild, only to find that we're not alone. Strange and deadly creatures have occupied our old worlds."
The Guardians--us...humankind... is aware of the Vex, Fallen, Cabal, and Hive. Since he said nobody knows what it was that took us out, there is a race we know nothing about. They attacked us before any of the other races moved into our solar system. This is where my theory comes in: [THEORY] The Traveler fought them off and saved us, nearly destroying them. A remnant of them survived, and went into hiding so they could rebuild their army. They were making a direct attack on earth, our motherplanet, and when the Travler descended on them, they severely damaged its underside but it ultimately hurt them enough that the ones that survived fled directly into the closest possible hiding place: our Moon. They plunged into the depths of the Moon, shattering its surface. Inside, they have been rebuilding their forces, preparing to arise and destroy the Traveler and take what they almost gained once and for all. [EVIDENCE] Remember that enemy moodboard? Notce that their iconic shape used for the inspiration of their race is a triangle. Bungie showed us these "giant onyx pyramid ships" (notice the destruction on the ship). Here is another image that seems to hold to the basic appearance and architecture of the other image showing the inside of the Moon fortress, and contains some basic angular shapes and triangles throughout its design: Unnamed, mysterious fotress and/or factory Remember another thing about the moodboard: Half of the poster was covered in a black smoke. This may be represented by their industrial fortress as they devote their resources to building up their army. Aslo, recall that Staten said the Moon has fissures of light and "seeping gases". Lastly on the moodboard, I'd like to point out the color theme for that race: yellow and black. Look at the images. 'Nuff said. There's a couple last things to bring up in regards to the mysterious 5th Race. Read a quote from this article from IGN a while back:
"The two of them are now three, and the trio plumbs the depths of the Dust Palace, reaches Charlemagne’s Vault, and Staten scores a new pistol. Like the Huntress’s sidearm, it too has a custom name: “Thorn,” a fitting description for a 45-caliber hand cannon"
The Dust Palace is located in the exclusion zone on Mars, which is Cabal-held territory. Thorn, however, is clearly not a Cabal weapon, as it was shown and pointed out by name during the GDC Conference. "Thorn" Notice the look of that pistol. It is clearly not reminiscent of anythin we've seen from the Vex, Fallen, Cabal, or Hive. Instead It appears to match the dark, angular style of the previous images. Notice how the front base of the gun resembles the elongated pyramid shape of the ships shown earlier, and features small, angular yet chaotic points across the entire weapon, and it appears to be made of the same "onyx" material. Also, when the narrarator in the initial reveal says the tried to destroy us, this image is shown. That object fits the theme as well. This mesh of organic and geometric fits the style of the inspiration images Bungie showed at the conference, and is present in all the images I've compiled. The presence of a 5th Race pistol in Cabal territory further supports my theory that the 5th Race once owned this solar system, and when it moved onto earth, it disappeared after its defeat by the Traveler, and other races moved in on their territory afterward. The last thing is that the Moon has been abandoned and labeled as a dangerous "Forbidden Zone". And I think it's because they are terrified that some of this species survived, and don't want to face it without the protection of the Traveler back at home. Welp, that concudes my thoughts about the mysterious 5th Race. Everyone please add your own ideas, corrections, etc. I'll edit this if more comes to mind. Peace! and God bless. - Siff

Ok i posted this on your other forum the one with vehicles i think it was... anyways what i believe that 5 th race is is probably named glimmer. this site shows that bungie trademarked both the hive and the glimmer at the same time. http://destinynews.net/tag/destiny-glimmer/ What bungie trademarked. also the concept art where we saw a hunter some cabal and a fallen warrior all together and the cabal and fallen warrior had green highlight's. now like you pointed out warghost650 the moon had flickering lights and seeping gasses. Now i know the green highlight doesn't fit into the yellow and black theme but who knows maybe the glimmer when in full apparition has like a yellow highlight over a black smoky body. Also on one of my posts a while back someone had pointed out that maybe the glimmer are shapeshifters and the only way to see them is that green highlight. What leads me to believe that is true is that i can't see the cabal and the fallen working together. those are my thoughts and ill stick to them til i actually see what the 5th race actually is and if they are called the glimmer.

    • Oh, Oh, Oh! Pick me! In one of the concept art images, it shows the Fallen and Cabal together under some sort of mysterious "influence" (dark army anyone?) Also, the eyes have turned blue, the armor black, and the strange black mist is seeping out of the Fallen and Cabal. I think the Glimmer are mind-control beings that have extreme power, and will be behind-the-scenes and playing puppetmaster throughout Destiny's story. The Glimmer are making me scared already. Edit: the Fallen and Cabal are walking sort of zombie-ish...

      • If anything, I would be it would be your first possibility. The rest of your characters I am pretty sure are from the hive and fallen, in fact their is a wizard type with the hive in the concept. So my bet is on one. Besides that: HOLY KLOPFMACHEN! THAT IS AWESOME! Didn't notice that before, good catch.

        • Warghost650! Very nice observations sir! Got your link from the comment on your post in my topic (holy crap it's inception...bleh tongue-twistin...) Sorry it took me so long...but anyway yeah! Glad I came...I felt like I was onto something but didn't get nearly as far as you haha. It seems like this is a very likely scenario...and somehow the "Bridge of Chains" and moon Hellmouth are connected with the production of that evil lantern gas stuff that powers them or helps them in their conquest of Earth. Yellow gas+black smoke=5th race. But I hope they're not too ethereal because that wouldn't lend itself to fun gameplay...although clearly they are more so than the other 4 species. As for the concept art pieces, I would have to agree with MiloOmega that those are mostly Hive/Fallen/Cabal, but the 1st one: possibly Glimmer. Either way, my bigger question is the significance of the other races. (MyTheoriesFollow) The Fallen seem to have a somewhat linear story. Their planet or system or whatever goes to crap...they get scattered, so they travel around the systems with a chip on their shoulders hoping to dominate when they can and survive and somehow reagreggate. Their technology and mood suits that; improvised technology, living on scraps but still possessing advanced technology enough to dominate weaker civilizations (Humans?? uh-oh lol) The Hive have, perhaps predictably, the natural parasitic storyline. Infectious scum want uninfected turf. They spread. They suck. No one likes them. The Cabal...what are they? They're the Romans. They are a superior Military force bent on expansion by conquest. They have a powerful war machine, powered by industry and huge factories, hence making their force on Mars (to mine Iron, Sulfur, etc.). They're no joke, but they are somewhat easy to understand. Here's the monkey wrench...THE VEX. They're from the future...or the past...or both. Either way they probably know everything. They know exactly what's happening and even if they're not the greatest perceived threat, they will remain so in my book unless proven otherwise. Sure, the Glimmer may be transsentient, but if they don't travel through Time like the Vex, then they got nothing...I mean...the Vex are robots...unaffected by The Hive, and possibly Glimmer shenanigans. So what don't they have? Some technology maybe, but they could easily acquire it. They excel with anything computer or mechanical and operate with resolute and unbiased wherewithal. And yet I get the feeling they are biding their time, not going on the offensive like the Fallen, Hive, or Cabal...but, like the Glimmer, waiting for the endgame. Self-aware Robots out of Time, Trans-Sentient beings, and the Exos, Awoken, and Humans of the Last City...these are the biggest players in the game...DESTINY AWAITS. So yeah...

          • Neat idea presented, but as far as the name goes, I'm 25/75 as to wether or not I think that's the actual name. Glimmer is a sign of light which is an indication of hope. I don't think these guys represent hope at all lol. Not sure if Glimmer is the Forerunner equivalent for Destiny considering the name and the fact that it was registered with other factions' names. Regardless, good read. I'll be sure to look around for more info.

ENCORE ENCORE! But really, I want to hear more! ;) well done, Mr. Warghost. It's already been brought a couple times, but I thought it would be worth posting the above image. First off, the image name is "dark patrol." See the smoke coming off or dust or whatever, coming off the various enemies? The ethereal glow in their eyes? I think the dark smoke seen in the Moodboard is actually the alien itself. You see the forms of all the other enemies in the Moodboard, simplistic or blurred/faded as they are. So where is the fifth race? It IS the smoke. And to address the point brought up by Your MOM is MC: Glimmer would make sense based on the characterization of the fifth race in the glow of the eyes of the possessed enemies and in slight glimmers in the dust.

                • Ok so another thing i would like to point everyone's attention to that i've kinda noticed is on the mood board. The lastpanel where i believe is the enemy named glimmer if you look towards the top of that panel you see pyramid looking ships. This leads me to believe that the weapons that the glimmer would use would be anything onyx looking. The pistol THORN for instance might be one of them. So here's my thoughts on how they fight. From what i've read and these thoughts encompass some of the comments on this thread as well as others. I picture them as being a smoke like creature that is able to shape shift. Normal weapons and magic can't hurt them. But if it is big enough it'll make them bodies scatter and it have to reshape itself. I also think that before it can change its shape into its desires it would have to see the creature first. Also it can mimic the things voice and language as long as it hears it being said. I also think that they can use their smoke as electrical interference to their choicce. So the person they mimic cannot radio for help. But because it is smoke based that would mean any wind would make it dissipate. That being said. This gives us 3 ways to identify a "Glimmer" enemy. The first being that their armor is black and they have a green highlight. This supports my idea of them being shapeshifters. at least in my head it does. The second is if bungie implements any wind within the game you can almost guarantee that the glimmer won't be around because it'll wind up dissapted and would need to reshape it's body once the wind is gone. also if there is any kinda of electrical interference that is out of the ordinary. It is just speculation and my imagination though so don't quote me on anything aforementioned. what do you guys think?

                  • Very nice stuff, I notice on the moon base concept art, the one entitled "Heart of the Fortress", that there is a single figure centered under the orb in the light. It now intrigues me because you showed the "Glimmer" picture "Unknown creature #1". I noticed the similar hunched shape and wide arms, the Moodboard also helped seal the deal when I first saw the GDC concept art with Onyx Pyramids. Also one last thing, my emblem or profile pic is a yellow and black eye, which i picked because the other pics you can choose from on the same page are ones that would correspond to the enemy races from the Moodboard. There was one I'm sure for each race. Except the unknown 5th. Hopes this sheds some light.

My own suspicion is that the "Glimmer" represent a non-corporeal "demonic" or unknown and unknowable alien (delete for preference) agency in the Destiny universe. Deprived of a means to directly, physically and malevolently intervene in humanities affairs they attempt to influence matters through the possession/manipulation of the other alien races (excepting the Vex who, by their very nature as machines, cannot be used in this fashion). Perhaps, if indeed they represent the existential threat to humanity, they were once capable of direct physical manifestation. Did they wage a genocidal war against us in all our guises at the height of the Golden Age? Are they sustained or nourished by fear and terror? Were they of a magnitude of power that it took the sacrifice of the Traveler to halt them? It's possible that their motivations will remain incomprehensible and outside the scope of our understanding (Lovecraftian influence perchance?). Unbodied and retreating to the moon they are now, reduced yet still terrible, reaching once again towards humanity. Edit; typos, repetition. #inalllikelihoodwildspeculation

this is great stuff but i also agree on the smoke idea with...well not the enemies themselves but maybe the effect of their smoke or power can control other races which would make sense as to why us as humans never really understood what defeated us because we couldn't see it.....i bet before the traveler came the smoke would take over our own bodies and thats how we got defeated....by ourselves (or the other races in the universe). But when the traveler came he had the power to repel the smoke or kill these 'glimmers' and now that we have the power (from the traveler') to resist this smoke we can fight back.

                      • Wow, posting from my phone.... Rad. Here's an idea. Looking at the concept art you had of the potential Glimmer with four arms (the first one I believe) I thought "well why would they have two four armed races", but I've been wondering about the whole " the fallen were members of once great houses"... Maybe the fallen are glimmer exiles, the members of the houses who fought the traveller.

A being with shape shifting abilities is very possible. And i chose a video that made me think of Glimmer , spirit from Oban racer was the idea that came to mind when i saw that mood board. I believe they can have the power to turn into smoke and control beings as well. SPECULATION: Maybe they can also have 3 forms like a speed form, strength form, Support form wear they grow wings from there body in a grotesque way similar to spirit. Because i believe there form of transportation and combat will be different compared to the other enemys.

                          • I think that the points you made, OP, are very logical. Well done! If you notice, when the floating Pyramids, the Hellmouth on the Moon, and the Heart of Fortress concepts were shown, Bungie always said they "couldn't talk about that". They also haven't said a single thing about the Glimmer, which makes it seem that all these are connected, and therefore they can't talk about one without revealing the others. I think this is significant, as this would mean that all three of these concept images (And the Glimmer) are very important to their story, and therefore cannot be talked about by Bungie.

                              • I think that the Glimmer is the smoke that's always present in the pictures. They're called Glimmer because when you look into the smoke you see a small, twinkling, GLIMMER of light. The light draws in its prey until your feeble mind succumbs to the invasive cloud. And that's the light that the Cabal and Fallen emit in the concept art. When someone inhales the smoke, it fills their body and then their brain is overtaken by the GLIMMER of light. The Glimmer can also take the form of humans and other species and that's how they annihilate races so quickly. They slowly SEEP themselves into society as regular people until they receive their orders and strike. Why do you think we don't know what hit us, what tried to stamp us out? Because it came from within. The Glimmer didn't even have to make most of their own bodies, they put themselves in cigarettes. We invaded ourselves. Soon they had a human army beyond numbering PLUS their other soldiers in space and orbit. We didn't understand what we were fighting because it was US.
