Is beating your child effective?

For disciplinary purposes of course. I don't think it was. What about you?

Care to define what you consider to be beating? By most definitions of the word, no. As for spanking like it or not young children don't have developed reasoning or emotional control so physical punishment is a necessary tool to let them know when they do wrong. It shouldn't be the first reaction, and it shouldn't be taken as far as causing lingering pain, but sometimes it's necessary. Personally I think that parent's refusal to give out meaningful punishment is part of why today's youth are so irresponsible and overly defiant.

  • Beating? No. Physical discipline, such as spanking? Certainly. There is a difference.

  • well... it only causes fear. That's it. Nothing else. So no. You should teach your kids more than fear. Sure it's easy. But it's lazy above all.

In the short term yes. Could also work in the long term. Depends really.

Only if you get them before they go into a fetal defense curl, after that their damage resist increases by at least 5. No. Hitting, Beating, or in any matter physically injuring or inflicting pain on a child is terrible parenting. There is always an alternative to physical abuse. If you hit kids you are pretty much the lowest tier of human. Period.

I was only spanked like once or twice. I've never been one to get into "trouble". I don't think it's effective anyways. Just IMO. But it seems like more of a psychological fear of getting into trouble, rather than a true, well-meaning teaching of right and wrong. I suppose it would depend on the parent.

    • Beating would be abuse. Spanking is effective and is not beating.

    • I mean, it worked for me in that I stopped doing bad things and I'm a mostly well-adjusted adult, but I do have some confidence issues that have been attributed to that. All in all I think it can be effective. Pretty much every single child in the whole history of mankind was beat up until now.

    • Well my mom beat me when i was younger than 14, and threatens me physically whenever i don't do something she wants me to do and i'm 20, or something she expects me to do. I've never done anything wrong,But then again, i don't think i've done much correctly. So i guess it's not so much "beating" that got me out of trouble, it was mostly myself avoiding trouble because it seemed dumb to me. If i would've been prone to violence, or criminal activities i suspect nothing would've changed.
