Lost your job or earn less money?

I took a 10% pay cut just before the economy tanked. During the worst of it, we actually had our best years (salary restored and raised), and opened 4 new plants in as many years. Just now, as the economy is recovering for everyone else, we are slowing down again. With all the new plants, our break even is way higher than it was before the crash, so while we are still doing more business than we were, not sure demand will keep up with how much production we have grown. The health of the company I work for is tied to oil and metal prices. While high oil and metal prices is usually bad for the rest of the economy, they are good for us, because higher prices spurs more exploratory drilling, and opens up mining that is otherwise cost-prohibitive. The more drilling and mining, the more lucrative my job is. I have had to take temporary cuts, but so far, they have all been restored with regular raises, so I can't complain.

It's not a crisis, it's a collapse. Also, I have given both money and a bud to people holding signs asking for weed money! HAHAHA!

I'm majoring in Economics. I get a load of people expecting me to care about their views on the sources of the crisis / how to get out of it (no, asset backed currency is not a solution)

Edited by Picklesandgravy: 3/19/2013 4:59:44 PMI lost more on my paycheck after the increased taxes, but we got a raise a few weeks after that. So I am making the same amount before the increased taxes. The healthcare industry is in shambles right now, I am surprised we even got a raise.

Yes and no. I was able to get a job in 2009, even when things were pretty bad, so that was good. The major problem is that I haven't seen much in the way of raises, even though the housing market is doing much better and cost of living is rising faster than my income.

In a sense. I would really, really like to get a job, but the current economic situation in my area makes that very, very difficult. I live about 80 miles outside of LA in San Bernardino county. I have three cities in my area, each of almost 100k people give or take. The unemployment is 13.75%. A lot of people are out of work and that makes it incredibly hard for someone who is just starting out. I remember seeing a picture last week. A local 99 cent store was hiring and 700 people showed up to try and get a job.
