Granted, they weren't called public events, but it kept track of where you were in the story, and then found other players who were in that exact same spot. Also, you couldn't actually see this other character until you joined their game. I like the idea of a more "living" open world game where you can literally see what other people are up to, and without pressing a button, either join them or go on your merry way. I guess that's one of the main reasons I'm looking forward to Destiny.
