How to make tags better (The Ultimate Solution)

I think tags as they are now are not good enough to sort threads and make your forum experience enjoyable. They are good to customize your experience and essentially make your own subforums, but there are some flaws in the system. With everyone being able to attach six random tags to their topics without any rules or limitations or something people are downright invited to abuse tags to get as many viewers as possible or just attach random tags that they see on the left. Through that the whole forum is a big mess with threads having tags that don't have anything to do with them and #Community threads being mixed into #Offtopic threads, #gaming threads being mixed into #Community threads and so on. Additionally this makes you see many threads two or three times. Hiding threads is not very useful for any of these problems because the threads are hidden universally and not just in the forums where they do not belong. How to make tags better: It would be good if there were different tag categories. Imo these three categories would be optimal: primary tags: these tags are preset and there is only a very small amount of them. Everyone who creates a topic has to choose one of these tags and only one. I think that #Gaming, #Community and #Offtopic would be best. Primary tags shall classify the forum into some rough categories. secondary tags: they are preset too but there are more of them. It is not obligatory to use one of these, but again you can only choose one. #Universe, #Recruitment, #Gallery, #Feedback, #Help and #Bnetbugs would come to my mind here. Secondary tags shall have a similar function as custom tags (see below), but offer a clue to new members or people who can't think of or don't want to think of their own tags. custom tags: here you can think of tags yourself, but can't use any of the primary or secondary tags. I'm not sure about the number of custom tags that should be allowed, but I think more than three would be too much. So probably two or three. Custom tags shall give you the opportunity to create your own "subforums". On the left where it says "Topics" and "Explore Tags" the primary and secondary tags should always be present (you are following them by default). So that there is "Topics" then "Explore Tags" then "Primary Tags" then "Secondary Tags" and then "Custom Tags" or "Followed Tags". It would also be nice if you could sort your Custom/Followed Tags in folders or something similar (this was not my idea I read it somewhere and can't remember who thought of it) + boxes beside the tags so that you can display forums with multiple tags without having to use the search function. All this would bring more order into the tag chaos and make it more likely that you only see the threads that you want to see. So if you for example want too see community threads you click on #Community and there won't be any gaming or offtopic threads, but you can still click on #Help or a custom tag and see all threads that have it attached to them. Through secondary tags people that hate the custom tags can just use these, don't have to tinker with thousands of custom tags and there still will be more options to sort threads apart from the rough categories that primary tags create.

 • This, and other ideas I have seen in various similar posts, is an excellent direction for this site. However, not all "official" or "primary" tags need be exclusive. For example, #community and #offtopic should not be able to go together, but #universe and #gaming I could see being used together appropriately.
